I bought two dogs...to hunt sheds...didn't work out.
-
I read a big article on a company that trains them in the midwest.....I'll see if I can find if for ya.....
-
thanks that would be kind of you! and great sheds! hope to have a dog myself!
-
I'm all for people using dogs to find sheds but by far the best part of shed hunting, for me, is spotting them.

Spotting them in my Labrador's mouth would be even more exciting to me... (because they will hardly retrieve anything outside of water).
-
no need to look for a dog from a kennel that trains them....the greatest limitation to a dogs ability to learn, is the owners ability to teach....any "hunting" breed (or dog with desire to hunt) will work just fine, you just have to be willing to train and get excited about, and the dog will too...make it fun, that's how ours learned, and he brought back 58 last season....

OK, I found an article on training them yourself.
Training a Dog to Find Shed AntlersScatter the scented antlers around the woods where you are going to train your dog. The sheds should be at least 100 yards apart, and you might want to mark ...

I have one in training right now I can't wait to see how she does in a couple months.

Some patiencs and time and it will pay off. My dog does really well with sheds and ducks.
Start em off early and they will surprise you
-
My two aren't experts but they have led to quite a few sheds.
They seemed to be more attracted to fresh sheds though

We're not a family big on pets. But if I could get a shed dog that could also run upland birds...

Sounds like you want a pudelpointer

a what? :dunno:

A pudelpointer, not the best looking dogs (though some people would strongly disagree) but they are one of the most versatile gun dog breeds you can get your hands on. They win a lot of the versatility competitions. They are great upland game dogs with natural pointing and retrieving instincts, they generally love water and retrieving in water (can't hand the freezing water as well as a lab) and they have stamina to go all day. I know a lot of guys are using them for sheds over labs due to that stamina. There are several top breeders here in the NW; a couple in Oregon and one in Idaho that I know of for sure.
The breed is out of Germany and it's history spans back well over 100 years (before more popular breeds like the German Wirehair). They shed very little and are hypoallergenic.

Woah dude, now we're talking! I almost died from a dog dander induced asthma attack when I was five. Haven't had much of a love for dogs since.
Can they track cougars, too???? You may have just sold me a dog :o
-
Even hypoallergenic dogs can bring that out allergies in some people so I would be careful.
I know German Wirehaired Pointers/Drahthaar (another versatile dog) have been used for Mt. Lions. They are a cross between a German Shorthair Pointer and a Pudelpointer. I have heard of people using them for sheds also.
I have never personally owned a Pudelpoiner but know several people that have and they are by far some of the best dogs I have ever seen. I will definitely own one some day when I have more time. I already don't have enough time for my Lab's.
I have no doubt a pudelpointer could be trained as a multi-purpose dog to hunt upland game, cougar and sheds.
-
Great info, thanks. Perhaps I'll name it a DB Hawthorne :IBCOOL:
Maybe I'll wait until my kids want a dog... then I'll be a prick like Obama: "Ok, you have to pay for it, and I get to pick it" 8)

I don't doubt it... I hear Draht's are great dogs on par with the Pudelpointer.
-
I think you mean a pud pointer is nearly on par with a DD.....lol
-
Well they do come from pudelpointer's lineage so I can concede that point.
