Title: Coyote Needed - (Coyote Tag Has Been Filled) - Thanx Halo - Video Added
Post by: sakoshooter on December 09, 2010, 01:08:54 PM
I am in need of a fresh coyote. It's going to be eaten so it'll need to be taken care of just like our deer/elk when we shoot one.
I only have about 10 days untill I'll have to fix it.
Long story. I'll explain later.
Anyone interested, just gut it and keep it clean and cold. I'm in the Puyallup area. I'll meet you somewhere or pick it up where it's easy for you.

Why 10 days? Christmas dinner isn't for another 16. If your going to do it, go all out and feed it to the inlaws for that special occasion.

Darn, I didn't know this was gonna be so funny.
First off, in my family I'm kinda referred to as a mtn man by a few of my city slicker siblings and their spouses.
At family gatherings(usually pot-luck)I usually have some kind of wild game. Everyone always turns their nose up untill they try whatever it is I cooked, smoked or whatever.
Well, I'm made some pretty cool dishes out of most anything you can think of over the years and this year's Xmas dinner calls for a coyote roast. I think a good two day soak of my secret marinade is in order then into the oven wrapped in bacon.
I'm thinking that just the hind quarters wrapped together with cotton string should make a pretty good roast. Of course those skinny backstraps could be good too.
I simply get a kick out of showing my cityfied siblings that good food does indeed come from the woods. They seem to think that all food comes from Safeway, LOL.
Anyhow, if anyone is interested, I'm serious. Holler at me. I don't see myself going on a coyote, proper, hunt before Xmas but if you are, I'll take one. Probably make a good trade for some cold beer or something.

Going to track this one for the outcome.  If yote ends up tasting good I might have to get the recipe and try it myself!  One of the few (interesting) animals I have not eaten yet.

Dogfish was my latest try this fall, made fish and chips not to shabby, but a pain to clean and prep.

I plan on being in that area on the 18th and might be able to bring you one.  I would research how people who eat dog preparte it as I hear the prep is very important to get that wet dog smell out of the meat.  You need to send pics of the process!  I say good for you for trying it.  I would also say that while there is lots of very good food that comes from the woods.............it's possible to go a bit overboard :chuckle:.

Been there, done that, EEWW!!  Eating dogfish compared to eating coyote is like eating at a five star restaurant compared to eating out of a dumpster behind a pig rendering plant!  Maybe, be sure the coyote wasn't eating dead beavers.   :puke:  I wrapped the backstrap pieces with bacon, and it made the bacon taste bad.

There's always a bunch of food. Way more than we can eat. Typical family pot-luck. Xmas is the perfect time. Our whole family only gets together a couple times a year, especially the cityfied relatives, so it's perfect.

Cougar looks  kinda like pork in color and eats like a combination of venison & pork. Damn fine the couple of times I've had it and very tender. Ralph Flowers(The Bear Man)turned me onto eatin cougar.

Question for you pros- Is there any wild animals that eat coyotes? I can't think of any but I'm not really an expert on the carnivores either.

i killed and skinned a coyote last winter, friend wanted the pelt, but i threw the carcass up in the canyon and a couple days later i was headed up the canyon and saw a cougar that was scavenging off of it only left the head and spine. as for animals that actively hunt yotes i have no clue.

back on topic i would never ever voluntarily eat coyote, but i dont think the unsuspecting victims will be made aware of the type of meat until after the fact, would love to be a fly on the wall when that message is delivered

Sakoshooter  you should donate all of your hunting/fishing gear to the hunt-wa  childrens charity drive, you won't have the chance after your family "strings you up"

Coon actually tastes good if you trim all the fat off of it.  Had a friend's family over for dinner (stew) and he told me not to tell what it was.  They all asked for seconds after finding out, 3 girls under 12 and one older boy.

If you soak the yote and it has been eating something decent like bunnies and pheasants, maybe it could be passable.  Try a strong tequila or whiskey sauce maybe.

Whoever does this, you don't have to gut it, just whack off the hind q's and tenderloin....

Again, good luck!

Just the back half of the coyote will do. Someone posted this above and they're right. I only need the back and hind quarters.

I train labs and for birds in the off season I use quite a few pigeons. Long story short, they eat just fine. Once at a gun club banquet I set out a dish of smoked duck and another with smoked quail. Court house quail I might add. Both were cubed with BBQ sauce and toothpicks next to em. The quail went fast and the duck not long afterward. When I started the anouncements, I made everyone aware of what kind of quail it really was. Most folks were amazed.
Most pigeon breasts go into my scrap meat/sausage pile in the freezer. Deer, elk, duck/geese, etc scrap all gets mixed together for sausage and is great. North Country Hot from Mountain View Meats in Tacoma.

You know, while in Korea I had the opportunity to try dog meat. Being the kind of guy that will try just about anything once, I gave it a shot. I'll tell ya, it was a bit "musty" tasting but other than that it was edible.

I don't care, I'd give it a try. It might just taste like ass but I wouldn't know that until I actually tried it. You only live once, damnit!

This is more or less a "Just for the hell of it" kind if thing but I am going to try to make it very edible so the rest of the family will eat it and like it.
Anything I shoot comes home and goes into the sausage pile in the freezer. If this doesn't turn out as a roast then it's to the sausage pile. It's gonna get eaten either way.
That is if one of you can kill one for me.

I was at a Mexican standoff with a yote this morning but all I had was my bow, no calls and I couldn't fake a call good enough to bring him any closer than 100 yards.  Would have been a good one, big male almost white coat.

I had a buddy that tried eating coyote. He tried it 3 different ways, and said it just tasted like something you weren't supposed to be eating. Not fit to eat.

He was a hopi indian, hunting, trapping, mountain man extrordinaire.

Thanx a lot Halo. Good shooting too. Just shy of 300 yds is a long way for such a little target. I appreciate the hospitality also. Good BS'n and looking at hunting photo albums. Pretty nice dead animal room to boot.
As for that tasty looking backstrap: We'll all have to wait till after Christmas dinner to find out but with my wife's help, I'll bet it comes out darn good. She cooks way better than the Hopi Indians.
If we really like it, I'll put the recipe up here.
I'll keep everyone posted.

I cant wait. Maybe I will post some pic's of my "blind" just to keep this thread going LOL. I wish I could call in sick in the morning and keep shooting but I think they are on to me now. For those who dont know, I lost a calf to the coyotes a week ago friday. I have 2 pic's of it 13 hors apart, 1st a cute little calf, 2nd pic is bones, hyde & holves hung up in the barb wire only 13 hours latter. War was declared! a couple day's latter I had a cow die of unknown causes so I fired up the tractor and placed it strategicly 273 yards from my bathroom window & got out the spotting scope, just a matter of time. Probably wont get another one that way though. Now I will try the predator call.

So here is my blind, You will just have to imagine me in my butt huggers blazin out the window. Did I mention I hit it twice, the first standing at 273 yards, a lethal shot, the second running at just over that another lethal shot and must have missed the third at about 300 when it was down facing me. I'm not used to that kind of thing being a meat hunt so got a little caried away.

Ya, pretty much. If it came down to it I would eat those coyote backstraps before I would eat some of the the antelope I have seen at the meat cutter, maybe even deer. Dont get me wrong, I'm not craving an invitation to the potluck but I have seen people drop animals at the butcher that I would eat that coyote backstrap first.

After 2 days of aging the meat at the correct temperature(whatever the outside air temp was), I boned the two hind quarters. Trimmed all the tendons and fat off the meat and it's in a bag in the refer aging a touch more. The wife's gonna pick up one of those elastic roasting bags at the grocery store tomorrow. I did my part. Now it's up to her to do her magic.
The backstraps have been in a marinade for a couple hours now. We're having them for supper tonight. Zesty Italian dressing and some Teryaki marinade mixed together. Rolled in flour and fried hot and fast in butter and a touch of bacon grease. I'll let ya know how it tastes in an hour or two.

When I(my wife)cooks my deer tenderloin(our treat every year), I leave them whole and she rolls them around in a fry pan untill charred on the outside and medium rare inside. Then I cut them cross grain into thin miniature steaks and they melt in your mouth. Well, we did the same thing with these lil backstraps and honest, they're darn good. Marinade, rolled in flour with Johnny's, pepper and a little garlic powder. Fried in butter.  Hot & Fast.

After cleaning and trimming the meat this afternoon, I looked at those backstraps and thought -  what the hell. Can't be too bad so I called momma at work and said I had supper taken care of. She was impressed since I never cook. She laughed when she got home and I told her what I was makin.
I guess I don't expect anyone to believe me when I say it was good but if we didn't think much of it, I'd say so. I said I had to make a post and what do you think we can compare it to. She said it was close to the elk or moose we had lately except no venison taste. Taste like chicken? She said no, it tasted like coyote. Let me put it this way: As easy as it is to cut the backstraps out, I won't be leaving them in the woods anymore.

Title: Re: Coyote Needed - (Coyote Tag Has Been Filled) - Thanx Halo
Post by: sakoshooter on December 21, 2010, 10:13:09 PM
I think if it had any parasites, it'd be obvious just like any other game animal. Besides, most kinds of worms would be in the digestive tract. Not in the meat. I'd have to think that deer, elk, bear and every other animal running around the woods, especially in the carnivore or omnivore category would have just as good of a chance of getting a disease as a coyote. In any case, I'd think the animal in question would not be very healthy looking and skinning or gutting would reveal the evidence. Other than that, I think we're taking the same chances eating any wild game meat unless we cook it well done and that's the bet way to ruin a good piece of meat.
A cow lays in it's own defacation out in the field. We wash it off it's teats and drink the milk. We butcher these same cows and serve it in restaurants. We make reservations, stand in line and pay to eat it. Then we tip the person that served it to us. Think about it.

I got the call there was another coyote out there. I raced home at lunch, a 10 minute drive, did it in 7. Sure enough, there it was with a buch of crows harrasing it. So I ran upstairs to my blind/treestand and try to get settled in the tub for a shot. 275 yards this time. BOOM! he's cartwheeling & floping. I jack anther round in, remember how I get carried away, squeeze the trigger, CLICK!, Crap! I grabed an old clip that dosnt feed well, empty pipe. He takes off for the swamp. I run out, blood not hard to find but running out of lunch time, Long story short I think it made it to a big pile of blowdown & root wads & junk in the swamp. I will look further tonight. This one looked a little bigger than the last one and a little darker, especially on the back. Damn, sure hate to see those backstraps go to waste. More latter.

Thats about where I'm at, dead on at 200. I think my problem is when I'm dropin the hammer on a deer or elk I'm concentrating on that exact spot I want to put the bullet to deliver maximum damage to the vitals without getting too far high & forward and ruining alot of meat in the front shoulders. With coyotes I pretty much just wanna hit them in the brown as many times as possible. Old habits are hard to break, "hit brown slow e'm down!"

Ya know, I was just thinking, (often dangerous), I might have to change guns for the next one. I have a 257 Weatherby Mag with a 4X12 Leupold thats sighted in for 300. That might be fun. The only problem is it's left hand bolt and I'm right handed. That might throw my, "as many times as possible" off a bit but one should do it anyway.

As you have noticed he has not told us how it went, wonder if he is still tied up to the whooping tree  :dunno:

But I am patiently waiting to see how this turned out, and hoping there are PICTURES!!!!!!!

My wife actually made the roast. I just boned it out. She made it the same way she does our venison roasts. Crock pot. It came out darn good. I've never done this video thing before but here's a link. Let's see if I did it right.

I know I've said it before in this thread but again, I'd try it. Why the hell not? You only live once and I'm sure I've eaten a lot worse overseas.

Roast is OK with me but there's other ways I prefer meat. It tasted just like any other roast my wife makes. The backstraps on the other hand were damn good.

I've killed my share of coyotes plus skinning a few over the years that other folks have shot and I don't get the  "smell" thing you guys keep refering to.  They smell just like any other game animal. Unless of course you gut shot it. The only wild game animal I've found that actually has an offensive odor to it is possum.

That's because your not supposed to gut a opossum!  :chuckle:  I LOVE opossum! they are real tasty... I guess I'll have to try the coyote backstrap...  :bash: gona have to reread for your recipe

Like I posted before, the one I tried made the bacon around it taste bad....  It might make a difference what they have been eating.   :dunno:  Mine was shot off a beaveer carcass while duck hunting.

Glad it worked out for you.

My hunting partner emailed a couple pics today of two coyotes he and his son just shot. Below is what he had to say about how they ate..................................

;)James and I each shot a coyote Thursday on the lower crab creek. Took the back straps off each one, they are definately good tasting.

Yeah that.  They say you can drink your own urine too, but I'm not about to do it.

I think the difference between drinking your own urine and eating coyote backstraps is quite a bit.
