I'm looking at getting a new pistol again. I'm looking at a 1911 in .45 and want to know everyones opinion. What brands do you guys recommend? Don't want a cheap low end gun, I want a good reliable gun in the 700-800 range probably. I can probably spend more but don't want to completely blow all of my money. Was looking at some of the Springfields, Colts, and Kimbers on gunbroker to get kind of an idea on price and I think that the Kimbers are more than likely going to be out of my price range, but my options are still open. I have not had a chance to get my hands on any yet, except the taurus that I used to have.
-
Ok, after doing a little more looking around I'm really interested in the Springfields. Still open to suggestions though, I can't afford to get it just yet so It's going to be a month or more before I have the money for whatever I decide on. Anyways, all input is appreciated.
-
I have the Kimber Pro Carry 2,I bought it a few years back in your price range. It has been a great gun with no issues at all. I also bought the Kimber .22 conversion kit. Great way to practice with the gun for cheap.
-
Have a couple Kimbers...a Custom Covert and an SIS, both 5 inch guns. Son has a Custom Covert and daughter has a 3 inch Kimber in 9mm. No issues...great guns.
-
I have a Kimber Custom II. Great gun, solid, shoots like a champ. I also have a Springfield XD Tactical in .45. Also great. Little side note about the Kimber. My dad shoots an Eclipse and handloads his own ammo. He had a squib and fired a full power round into it. The barrell ruptured, slide pin bent, ruined the spring....no other damage. Gun held together and he still has both hands and the same ugly face. He contacted Kimber and they said ship it back. He paid for a new barrell and other components. They put it back together, tested it, measured it, shipped it back. Only charged him for parts. My point in sharing is a quality gun can save you ass in more ways than one.

I don't like 1911s. They just don't do it for me. If I was going to get one though,I'd be sure to go full sized. I don't think they're as reliable once you start cutting them down.
Don't feel bad about not being able to afford a Kimber. They're QC sucks. For what they cost, Kimbers (either rifle or handgun) have far too many issues. They should be 100% out of the gate.
-
I have a para p13, a springfield micro compact and smith 1911sc. of them all I prefer the smith. many purists will balk at the extractor on the smith because it is not johns original design, but it flat works. I sent a pistol to smith that I wore out and they fixed it and sent it back to me qick....it was out of my hands for 9 days. I would say give the smith a peek. good weight, looks, mine has been eating 45super w/o issue.

Mine is 100% so far. Not one problem yet. So all Kimbers suck? I love these posts when people start saying that argueably the most respected 1911 out there really just sucks.
-
I wanted a springfield, but couldn't find one... "Settled" for a base model kimber, couldn't be happier. I've had zero problems in the last 2 years.
Look around, you can find new kimber custom II's for under $800
-
:)I have owned a Springer, Olympic, Colt, Remington Rand, and a few others, custom and stock, I now own two Kimber Pro carry II's, they are easily the best. Springer second. I consider the 1911 the best 45 auto on the market. I have also owned Paraordinance P14, glocks, Sigs, some high capacity some standard.
I'll take my Kimber over all of them. My carry piece has thousands of rounds thru it, not a hiccup. accurate and fast. I like it a lot.
If you cannot afford one the Springer XD seems to be a good gun.

Congrats on deciding 1911...you'll want to wait til next year to buy it anyway.
First question is how do you plan on using it?
Target? Plink? Action Pistol? Carry? Conceal?
It's been mentioned already but the 1911 runs best in the 5" (Govt) size....as you move down the size spectrum, reliability goes down too.
I have two Kimbers and they're excellent.
My next 1911 will be an STI Spartan, about $650 delivered.
There is a limited edition Springfield out right now, I think it's called Rangemaster or Range Officer.
Pretty sweet for about $800.
Avoid the base mil-spec 1911 unless you're a tinkerer...you'll spend alot more on upgrades than if you bought one loaded.
1911's can be had with many different sight packages.
My Kimber Custom had black patridge sights and my eyes didn't like them.
XS BigDots are a nice upgrade....$150 installed.
Have fun, don't rush...shoot friends guns and get a feel for size, weight, barrel lengths.

Does anybody have any first hand experience with the Taurus 1911? I've been looking at one for a while now. The guy trying to sell it to me keeps telling me how great it is. :dunno:
-
I have a Kimber custom 2 full size in .45acp and its a really solid pistol havent had a single problem with it other than it does not like blazer brass ammo. i picked it up new for $650+tax
people may say that kimbers rust, have failure to return to battery, failure to feed and other issues and i can tell you that i have not had one single problem with mine other than finding enough spare change to afford ammo for it

Thats a can of worms I refuse to open.

The Taurus looks very Nice for the price. I have not shot it but have fondled it alot.
-
The new taurus 1911s are actually very good guns. I got one of the standard 5" barrel taurus 1911s and it is a very accurate gun. I put it on sandbags and every shot went into a circle less than 3/4" at 15yds! The trigger is very good also, at first you have to take up a tiny bit of slack, but after that it is light and crisp with no creep at all. There is also a few features on it that you have to pay extra for on a Smith 1911, checkered all around grip, polished feed ramp, skeletonized trigger. Plus it feeds ammo very reliably. When breaking it in with the first hundred shots the slide locked back a few times while still loaded, but once I cleaned it and shot it again it hasnt happened since after hundreds of rounds. I use it as a target pistol (yes I go for accuracy and dont just spray ammo at a rock quarry somewhere) and you cant beat the price for this good a gun, great quality and fun to shoot. BUT, if I was buying a gun to protect my life I would go with one of the more popular brands, even though mine is reliable right now you never know. Plus the targets dont shoot back at me if I have a malfunction! :P If I carry in the woods I have my trusty 4" ruger redhawk .44 that will not let me down.

Did I say all Kimbers suck?
Its great that you got one thats been 100%. The sad part is,that for every guy that gets a good one, there is another guy that dropped $1000 and got a POS.
Its funny that Glock can put out a weapon that costs 50% of what a Kimber does, and is almost always 100% reliable.
-
I have a Kimber custom 2 full size in .45acp and its a really solid pistol havent had a single problem with it other than it does not like blazer brass ammo. i picked it up new for $650+tax
You paid $650 for a new Kimber Custom 2? Got to be blued....right?
great price.
-
If you are determined to get a Kimber, try to find an older "Series 70" one. Good guns. In order to keep selling guns in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, Kimber sold out and started putting a "series 80" firing pin safety in the slide. It's similar to the Colt Series 80 design, but a design that Colt rejected as being a poor design, and prone to problems. I've never owned a 1911, but have several friends that do, and love them. I am not anti-1911. Just never got around to getting one, and now they are WAY out of my price range.

yup its blued, matte black though not glossy and that price was 2 1/2 years ago not sure what they are going for now. msrp was 800 then i think msrp is 850ish now

I used to have one and got rid of it. Sometimes the hammer would not stay cocked after firing. It would cycle shells through fine, but every once in awhile the hammer would de cock after cycling.

Sounds like it wanted to go full auto? :yike:
-
Never thought about that being a potential problem. I think it was more of a quality problem than anything. With that being said, I don't have a problem with taurus in general. I have a taurus 24/7 pro and have not had a single problem with it. Always cycles anything I put through it.

I've got the Springfield XD 45. Very nice gun. I found mine used ( but was brand new looking ) for $450. No scratches, nothing. I have it with me in my " Fanny Pack " all the time. It handles the recoil very well.

I had to comment on the fanny pack thing. I could never wear one of those things. First off, anyone who knows me would know right away that it had a gun in it. And not to mention it's still a fanny pack.

That's a very good point. You might be able to pass yourself off as a dumb tourist as well. Just wander around aimlessly gawking at shiny objects.

:yeah: No joke! It really works!

Before Dam Wessen sold out to CZ, they made a great 1911. American made, and as close to hand made that you will find. I would look for one of these, as Dan Wessen made some great pistols. Look for the Pointman model. I would not buy it unless it said made in USA on it.
-
I have a colt commander and really like it. Kimber's are nice and popular, but I have to agree with what Rick said partially. For the money, their QC is so-so and you can get a custom built, match grade everything by using a different platform. The good thing about Kimbers is that because they market themselves so well, and have a loyal following, you could pick up one used, and sell it later for what you bought it for.
The XD's aren't considered 1911's are they?

You're right XD's aren't 1911's. But you know how everybody likes to change the subject. I do actually have a Colt model 70 1911. Had it for 35 years.
I wonder what it's worth. About 85 %. :dunno: :dunno:

about 3x what you paid for it and going up every day

I have just the 1911 for you... $$$$$ A Bill Wilson Combat.... Check it out.... Custom made to fit your hand.... :twocents:

I wish the Kimber "sucked" a little more. That way, maybe I could finally afford the Super Carry Pro. I have a Colt Officer, love the shorter barrel, but I have a big "mit" and the short grip doesn't work for me. The SCP is just the ticket for me. Someday!
-
I carry a kimber custom 2 every day in all kinds of weather... as a police officer my life depends on my wepon and I would not carry anything else. They take around 200 rounds to break in but after that they are a outstanding wepon
-
I was looking at the custom 2 as well. It's funny that you mention you are in law enforcement. I just talked to my buddy who is an officer in Moses Lake and he also recommended the kimbers over all the others. That tells me alot about their reliability.
-
200 rounds to break in is pretty good. Every .45 I have seen runs better a little loose. Usually, just gets better and better after 2000 rounds.
-
There are alot of good 1911's out there, try to go somewhere that they rent guns and shoot some.
-
PARA ORDNANCE !!!
I've had my P13 for 17 years now and LOVE it !!! 13+1 rounds of 45 ACP ya gotta love it.
Three year old custom Kimber but haven't shot it... seems real solid though.
Had a Ruger P90 that was o.k., traded it for the Para Ordnance (best move)
-
Look for the Tacoma Police test on 45's, and kimber. I'll try to find it.

Browning Hi-Power in 9mm or .40sw :chuckle:
*
In a .45, Kimber.
Shop around for a used one and you can find them in your price range, pawn shops and ask if they will call you if they get one in that your looking for, another tip with pawn shops is to ask what they have coming up that will be avail for sale, some if you know them will let you put money down to hold it for you and when it comes out its yours first to purchase.
-
In a 1911,you should buy a Kimber. You won't get tighter groups unless you are just gifted at shooting. $800-1300
Next I would go to a Springfield. From all accounts they make a great quality 1911.
If you want to be the coolest guy around, look up a Les Bauer or a Wilson Combat.
They are only around $1000-2000 more than a Kimber. And again, most won't shoot it any better than a Kimber.
My best is a 1 ft group, free hand at 40yards.Just trying it out.
Your results may vary
-
I have a Kimber 5" gun and love mine.
The Custom II is their most basic model and will be the cheapest but still high quality in my opinion. Ive never shot a Springfield so cant comment on those :twocents:
-
I shoot a Kimber in Bullseye competition. If I had the money I'd have a customized Colt or Springer, or complete Essex/Caspian built for me. There is nothing on the current mas produced market that compares to the trigger of a 70 series Colt Gold Cup National Match 1911 of years gone by.
Like was said before, determine the role of the gun, before you choose the gun.
-Steve
-
:yeah:
That is what I was trying to say. I would rather have a Colt, with a trigger job and lighter springs, then a stock Kimber.
-
Stainless Colt Government model, plain jane version. You can always upgrade sights, grips and other accesories later when you have more cash. There are lots of manuals and books on how to do your own 1911 mods. Very simple pistol to work on.
-
Saw a Springfield today that I almost broke down and bought even though I couldn't afford it. It was their loaded model with the tritium night sights for 699. They also had the same gun with the adjustable target sights for the same price.

Lay a way brother lay a way
That's a great price for a loaded 1911

I'm going back in in a couple weeks to buy one. Probably the one with the night sights, I didn't really like the adjustable ones. They also had a used Kimber custom II that caught my eye. I believe it was around that same price, but again I did not like the sights on it either. I'll have some time to think about which one I want to get in the next week or two though so I may decide on the Kimber and just upgrade the sights later.
-
I had adjustable target sites on my Beretta as well. I did not like them for all around use. Unless you are doing bullseye comps, or hunting with it, I would not get them.
-

If this is a new gun with fresh night sights, buy it.

It was indeed. They had more than just one so I'm not worried that they will sell them all at least. Even if they do sell it they will order me another.
-
So now I have a dilemma. I'm tring to decide between the used Kimber Custom II, na d the new Springfield A1 loaded with the night sights. They were both right around the same price and both very nice guns. The sights on the Kimber I didn't like but I can buy the night sights for 132 straight from Trijicons website. About the onle difference between the two, besides the sights, is that the Kimber has the match grade barrel and the A1 does not. Will the match grade barrel make a noticable difference in accuracy? Last longer, etc? Any input from the rest of the gun nuts?
-
Are you target shooting or is this a defence weapon? If you are target shooting get he Kimber. If this as a personal defence weapon go for the Springfield.
-
Something to concider, most who buy match grade barrels for their weapons tend to put allot of rounds through them. If you do choose the Kimber, check out the barrel real well or have a gunsmith check it out for you.
-

It will be a little of both. I don't shoot competition or anything like that but want it to be as accurate as I can afford. Reliability is more important but accuracy is a very close second.
-
OK...here we go....
Are both guns blued? Stainless? I think the 699 Springer is parkerized.
Is the Kimber an internal extractor version or external?....internal is preferred and you can get a new one for 699 with an internal extractor.
Both full (government) size?
Any extra mags or anything...Springfield usually give you some goodies in the new gun package.
Internal extractor Kimber is as good as the Springer and INMHO, a nicer finished gun.
Every Kimber I've shot has a better trigger than the basic or middle tier Springers.
Night sites on the Springer would be a tie-breaker for me.
BTW, I've posted before...I talked a friend into getting the parkerized Springfield Loaded. It came so rough from the factory it needed a return immediately and still is not that great.
I know that's one of thousands but I wanted to let you know.
My next 1911 will be an STI Spartan.
-
I own 2 1911's. The first one is a Kimber Custom II. I have had it for about 10 years and have put several thousand rounds through it. I have not had one problem with this pistol in that time. It takes all ammo that I put through it and it is also accurate with fixed sights. The second 1911 I have is a Springfield Micro Compact that I have owned for 6 months. The first 100 rounds I put through it I had 5 jams, 2 stovepipes and 3 fail to feed. I was using quality ammo and before I shot this I had gone through it cleaning and lubing. Also the first 30 rounds put through either missed the target or barely hit paper at 5 yards. I am not a sharp shooter but I sure am not that bad of a shot to miss the target at that range that consistantly. After a hundred rounds I was hitting paper consistantly but not accurately. I am not impressed with this gun and won't ever buy a Springfield again (shot a full sized one and wasn't impressed either). I have so far put more rounds through the gun and it still is a POS. I bought this for cc but I won't carry because I don't trust it to work when the time comes to need it. I am going to load some 185 gr. and pray that it works better. :twocents:
Edit. I forgot to add this site as a ton of good info. http://www.1911forum.com (http://www.1911forum.com)

I believe you are correct about the parkerized finish. I don't know which extractor the Kimber has but I wil see what I can find out.

Well, I went and picked up my new gun today. Got a Kimber Custom TLE II, blued. Unfortunately I did not have time to shoot it yet, probably not til this weekend. Should have just called in to work. Oh well, I think that I will be very happy with it.
-
Very nice! Have fun trying it out this weekend!
-
great pick i just bought a kimber tactcal pro II and love it.
-
I'm excited to break it in. I have slowly learned that you get what you pay for and have started to realize that most of the time a cheap gun is a cheap quality gun. There are some exceptions but I don't like to find out the hard way.
-
out of all the 1911 i have shot i dislike the colt the most, seem to be pretty inaccurate and seems to jam more than the rest, but that it could just be that paticular pistol too, i love the kimber and taurus, i would probly pick a springfield or taurus if it was me, good luck!
