I have a colt commander and really like it.  Kimber's are nice and popular, but I have to agree with what Rick said partially.  For the money, their QC is so-so and you can get a custom built, match grade everything by using a different platform.  The good thing about Kimbers is that because they market themselves so well, and have a loyal following, you could pick up one used, and sell it later for what you bought it for.

The XD's aren't considered 1911's are they?

You're right XD's aren't 1911's. But you know how everybody likes to change the subject. I do actually have a Colt model 70 1911. Had it for 35 years.
I wonder what it's worth. About 85 %. :dunno: :dunno:

I wish the Kimber "sucked" a little more.  That way, maybe I could finally afford the Super Carry Pro.  I have a Colt Officer, love the shorter barrel, but I have a big "mit" and the short grip doesn't work for me.  The SCP is just the ticket for me.  Someday!
Nothing witty here.... move along.

I carry a kimber custom 2 every day in all kinds of weather... as a police officer my life depends on my wepon and I would not carry anything else. They take around 200 rounds to break in but after that they are a outstanding wepon

I was looking at the custom 2 as well.  It's funny that you mention you are in law enforcement.  I just talked to my buddy who is an officer in Moses Lake and he also recommended the kimbers over all the others.  That tells me alot about their reliability.

200 rounds to break in is pretty good.  Every .45 I have seen runs better a little loose.  Usually, just gets better and better after 2000 rounds.

PARA ORDNANCE !!!

I've had my P13 for 17 years now and LOVE it !!! 13+1 rounds of 45 ACP ya gotta love it.

Three year old custom Kimber but haven't shot it... seems real solid though.

Had a Ruger P90 that was o.k., traded it for the Para Ordnance (best move)
