Well like 6X6 with archery and 300wsm Muzzleloader, my fathers season starts tomorrow, just getting the last things packed and getting ready to head over to the unit. He is super stoked and I think we packed enough stuff to last a month but better to have everything than not have something when we need it. Forecast calls for snow through the weekend so should be able to see fresh sign. If he is able to get his bull it will be his first branched antlered bull after everything went to spike only 16 years ago. He had 13 points and with the scouting and talking with folks he has done, we are optamistic we will see a bunch of elk. Story to follow, and hopefully pictures by the end of this hunt which will be accompanied by a huge smile on his face to say the least.
-
Man how much of a season does that area get :dunno: Tell him to stop at nothing and good luck! Keep us posted
-
Good luck. :hello:
-
good luck!
-
Have fun. It sounds like that would be a great tag to have.
-
good luck to you. I went out today and saw some good bulls. They are out there.
-
400 this area is getting hunted way to much and its showing,I will be out in the morning to try and fill my cow tag.
-
I know of a 390'' bull taken out of the Teanaway last week. Good luck tag holders
-
Do you have access to private land or will you be hunting public?
-
We will be concentrating on public land. No access to private.
-
Best of luck!!!
-
Good luck! I would have tagged out had I had a modern rifle in my hands. There out there! Go get em.
-
Good luck! Hope he finds the big one.
-
Day 1 in the bag and nothing, didn't even see an elk. There's always tomorrow!!!
-
Day 2 down and have yet to see an elk, maybe they have migrated to the feed station already. Oh well tomorrow is another day!!
-
Keep lookin....
-
Good luck to ya I was over there on sat. and didn't see an elk or fresh tracks. I dont't know much about this unit but seems when the snow flies they roll. Hope you find a straggler!!!
-
Day 3 and still no elk or any fresh tracks. Sounds like the cow hunters are having some trouble too. There's tomorrow!!!
-
How long is the season? Hope you find the bulls.
-
How long is the season? Hope you find the bulls.
It goes until dec 31st.
-
The elk moved down but there are the stubborn few that are in hard to reach areas mainly cause of private land.
-
I have a cow tag that runs through Jan 9th.
Have not seen a cow or cut a track.
Locals have not seen a cow in two weeks to the person.
I think they've migrated down to the feeding stations.
I have land owner permission also, nothing.
-
I have the same tag and it may seem that they all have moved out but without a snowmobile chances of you seeing one is slim they are around you just have to get to there wintering grounds.Bob may I ask who is the the property owner you have permission from?
-
keep going wen im prayin for you guys.

HHPro did you get your cow? We do have snowmobiles, yet haven't seen or cut an elk track. Ok out for day 4.
-
have you guys checked out above ronald yet? You may even check around the power lines in easton. to the property border of suncadia. Cover a lot of ground with those sleds. You will run into them eventually.
-
I checked the power lines to the suncadia, nada.
I just want to eat elk! :)
-
there is like 100 head that moves into a field in ronald everyday and night right now. Its all cows, one spike and a rag horn. Its all private obviously. But they are being fed. They come from the suncadia property but also they cross the highway. You cant miss em. I am sure if you go up above ronald to the north you will find them were they bed before they move in.
-
old dave chase keeps those cows fat all winter. There are a few that come down to feed. most all of them come out of scumcadia. There are some nice bulls that hang out above ronald. There are a few pockets that they hang out in.
-
yup hunt the edges around suncadia...maybe try up around sas mnt too?
-
Nope no cow wen haven't had much time after work but I am off for the next 12 days so hopefully I can find something.Good luck to you
-
sassee mnt. would be a good place to look also good call slayer. If you guys head up off 903 go upto the first gate on the left. The elk hang out down in there quite a bit
-
Thanks to everyone for the ideas we will be checking some of those areas. Day 4 was alot better we cut some fresh tracks and had our scope on a 3 point but wanted to wait for a bigger one!!!
-
Tuff hunt. we had trouble last year finding a cow but finally got it done. Try Lambert rd, at about the halfway point, in between private there is a section of public ground on the right hand side. alot of the locals feed the elk and deer in the winter up there and most likely will tell you "ABSOLUTELY NOT" if you ask permission but some will eventually cross into that public section. Saw a nice bull in there last year. :dunno:
-
Booner that state chunk looks a lot different these days its completely logged so now the elk pass through instead of bedding in the timber like they use to.
-
really? huh, used to be an elky little chunk of land...too bad.
-
Yea I checked it out Saturday one set of tracks leaving to the river and never returned shocked me when I drove up and seen that.
-
Has anyone brought to thought that if our tag runs through Jan 9th we will need a new 2011 License?
-
Licenses are valid until March 31st, I believe. They don't expire on Dec. 31 like they used to.
-
Day 5 was more ofthe same no fresh tracks, but it's been really nice to be out and enjoy some time with Dad, hopefully he will be able to close the deal!!!!
-
Wen,
PM sent. A BIG bull was taken yesterday AM right where we talked about, I was hoping it was you but doesn't look like it. :(. Call me.
-
Wen,
Was that 7x8 taken yesterday AM you!??? Thats two MONSTERS in two days out of the same spot...fingers crossed.
-
:bash: :bash: :bash: Congrats to the hunters scoring on bulls. I hope that you are one of the lucky ones.
-
Day 6, we cut fresh tracks but could't get on anything.
Day 7 and 8 are home with the families, then back at it on Sunday morning!!
-
A buddy of mine has a cow tag and was thinking on trying the Middle fork of the Teanaway but I am sure people have been up there. He doesn't have a snowmobile so he will be hoofing it.
-
Another 6x6 was put down yesterday morning.
-
Well hopefully my buddy will find a cow to put down.
-

Day 10 started out like any other day we woke up at the hotel grabbed our coffee and stale muffin and decided to go and area where we had seen some elk the previous week. Once we pulled in to unload the snowmobiles there was another gentleman there looking for a cow, and he stated that the day before he had seen 3 elk and they were all bulls. We were stoked and hopefully they hadn't gone far. We rode up the mountain and got to a new vantage point where we figured the guy was talking about and after 5 mins we were able to spot 1 elk feeding and after closer inspection noticed it was a 6x6 as we watched it feed and move across canyon we noticed that there was another elk bedded down and again noticed it was a 6x6 as well a bit smaller but both in our eyes were shooters, as we hadn't seen much up to this point. We sat there and contemplated what our next move was going to be. We decided we had 2 options, one of which was to walk right off the side of the hill and go after them, and the other since we had been there for a few days we remembered there was a road at the bottom of the canyon that would get us alot closer and faster. At this point we were about 800 to 900 yds away and needed to close the distance. After I got our landmarks pinpointed, we rode downa nd around the canyon and came up below them but didn't realize that we were right below them about 200 to 300 yds away, but couldn't see the elk due to the fact of all the repod in the area they were at. We walked up a little ridge across from them and about half way where we wanted to get we noticed that 1 of the elk was looking in our direction, we stopped and had 1 small opening in the trees and Dad decided that it was enough room that he could make a clean shot we were about 200 yds away. He shot and as he walked up to the area where the elk stood I stayed back to make sure he had the right area as the elk just disappeared after he shot. He got up there and there wasn't any blood plus no tracks we looked around and decided to walk around this small tree and some brush and noticed a set of antlers as He went around another tree there stood a 6x6, he looked at it and as it turned an ran away we got real nervous that hthe elk he shot at just ran off. He then caught out of the corner of his eye the tips of his elk laying in the brush dead. By the time I got to him he was grinning ear to ear and was really pumped up as was I.
We have alot of people to thank for all their help on this hunt, and want to thank everyone from the site for all the areas, and the time they put in to helping us a special thanks goes out to 6x6 and time2hunt words can't express how much we really appreciate your extra effort. These memories will last a lifetime, and after 13 yrs of putting in Dad finally has the biggest bull he has ever taken.

Wen, you just put your pic link in the insert image popup to the left of the row of icons (http://)
-
WenHunter: if you dont know how to upload pictures it's really easy. When you type a message on the bottom left of the screen it says "Additional Options.... click on that and where it says Attach: choose your file of the picture you want to upload and then once uploaded just hit post. Pretty simple, just thought you may want to know how to do that for future reference. Nice bull! Way to stick it out.

Way to go guys!!! Ecstatic to see it finally came together for you!

Wenhunter congrats on a fine elk. That gentleman that told where he saw those bulls at was that friend of mine who was looking for a cow. He gave me a call last week and asked about some ideas. We have both hunted elk up there in the past but that was archery. He is having to cover lots of ground on snowshoes. Congrats again

Tell your buddy thanks for the great info and the top notch directions, we ended up going up to where he had seen them and then made our way to where they were feeding and bedding. I hope he gets is cow, tell him good luck!! If I hear of anything I will let you know to pass it on.
