Title: Last hunt day tagging
Post by: Gobble Doc on December 20, 2010, 10:17:48 PM
This is hypothetical but what if my son shoots a deer on the last day of the season with his bow but then can't find the animal until the next day after tracking.  Would he notch his tag on the day after the season or on the day he shot it?  Just curious.

Same thing happened to my buddy this year in early archery elk.  We found and finished the elk the day after, notched the tag for the day before....and had already called the gamey in the morning to give him a heads up.....he didn't really care, never even showed up to check us.

if you put the day after you would be unlawfully tagging your game out of season right?  put the day you shot which in this case would be the last day of the open season would keep you safe.  I am sure there is a thin line about retreiving game after the seasons over and I am sure that the gamie will check the dialation of the eyes to see when it died.  Another good question is what happens if its not dead.  You would be killing it after the season so what then?
HMMMM

If I had to shoot an animal to finish it the day after the season was over, I would make sure there were not any witnesses and I wouldn't tell anybody.   :twocents:

My buddies had a shot deer run across the boundary into a closed unit once.  They called the game department and where told to retrieve the animal but couldn't bring their bows.

Thanks for your thoughts.  Sounds like it is probably best to tag it the day of the shot and then contact gamie.  Hopefully it doesn't get more complicated.  After reading on the board about how long it can track an animal it just got me thinking.

With all the D-bags out there looking to get their ten points I'd much rather tell the game warden I was going to finish an animal the day after season and have everything be okay'd then go in and try to shoot something on the sly and get it out of the woods.  A warm animal the day after season would be a little suspect to a warden if he showed up and didn't know what was going on.
