Title: Feed stations around Eburg
Post by: Ellensburg on December 21, 2010, 02:38:00 PM
Are the elk down in Joe Watt or Taneum? I haven't been out that way in about a month. Just wondering. I have family here and wanted to take them out but not if there are no elk to see.

Haven't been there this year but I am sure they're down.  I was in there last year during the 2nd week of december driving my truck around because they hadn't closed the gates yet and there was only a skiff of snow on the ground.  They didn't start feeding until around the end of December early January last year out there, i'm almost positive they're already feeding though. Last year even without the snow early on they were already down when i was in there so im sure they're there.

There was about 150 head at the east end of Taneum on the BLR land on Dec 3rd.

Yes there down. Was out last weekend and probably 200 head viewable from the parking lot.  I believe they are feeding around 1:30 pm.

Take your optics if you go to Joe Watt, the game department built a storage shed that seems to be in the way every time.  If there is snow there is a good hill to sled on too.

Heading from Seattle you can take the Elk heights exit. go up to the stop sign and go left. Go over freeway to the next stop sign and go right. Parallel the freeway for about 3-4 miles until you get to another stop sign and go right. Go back over the freeway. When you get to the next stop sign go left. Go another 2 miles or so and then take a right on Watt canyon rd. there will be a big white barn on the right side of the road where watt canyon rd. is. Head up the hill about 1-2 miles until you get to a big metal storage barn there will be an elk fence in front of it with a big stack of hay. Look around the barn and you will see the elk. If you have kids there is a big sledding hill for them to play on while you watch the elk.

The feeding station in ellensburg is nothing like Oak Creek. they feed the elk about 100 yards or so from the fence. Take optics with you!   :twocents:

Went out there Thursday. Saw 300+ elk. Some were no more than 25 yards away. Saw the more big bulls then I ever have up there. 30+ bulls that were 5X5 or better I would say. Quite a few that should score 330 and up.

Not a whole lot of spikes. The bull/cow ratio was very high.

Went up to the feeding station yesterday, this is what we saw in BRIEF! :bash: :'(  Mind you, we spent 5 days up in this area hunting for late archery and saw only 1 bull and two cows.

Its a long view of them, but if it keeps the natives from shooting them then I guess thats what it takes.

Looking at that big bull with the collar reminds me of when a buddy of mine had a big bull tag for muzzy up in bethel, he ended up whackin a 6 pt. and when we where on our way out chuck koles stopped us and my buddy ripped him a new one on how the state owed him a cape, man he was pissed, he had been trying to draw for years and when he did he ended up with a ruined cape.

Well your buddy didn't HAVE to shoot the bull with the collar, it was the choice he made....why should he be pissed at anyone but himself.    just sayin.

should have mounted it with the collar on it

Yeah thats a great bull too.  He was like 50 feet from the fence last week.  I guess I would mount the bull with the collar.  That way you wouldn't need a cape
