Title: Antler configuration
Post by: boneaddict on June 09, 2007, 03:03:04 AM
Its been awhile since we had a poll.  This is a two part poll.  What kind of a trophy would you rather shoot.  Part one will deal with configuration, while part two deals with favorite characteristics.

While I like non typical antlers my real trophy would have to be a typical symetrical 4x4 with eye guards.

Given the choice, and the tag, I'd rather shoot a big bodied mule deer doe with a butt like a horse.

Rackattack,

I'm sorry dude, I already shot your deer. ;)

Good thing they make more, eh?

I will take whatever I can get. But I like the look of a tall typical 4X4.

Same here. Only once have a passed up a buck, a good two point opening day. I regretted it for two days, then killed a large bodied 4pt. I have always shot (or at least at) the first legal animal for my tag/gmu.

Once Boneaddict spotted a big 4 point, high wide rack the evening before season, he was leaving a bedding area with a couple smaller bucks to feed, we followed them until dark from a mile away. We made big ambush plans, for the next morning. After day light a nice 3 point walked and fed by me, for 20 minuets I could have dropped him but passed, didn't want to mess up on the big 4, which we never seen again, guess he didn't come home that night. I watched that pass for years and only once again seen a buck cross it even though it was a heavily used bedding area. Bone got his buck later but I ate tag soup that year.

i ate tag soup last year for the first time in a while and passed on a 3x3 with some eye guards for the first time ever because i had scouted up a nice tall 4x4 with some other "nicer than normal" bucks earlier in the year. never found that deer but i sure would have liked to. i have never killed a 4x4 mule deer, so any would do, but i really like the typical frame with kickers, stickers, etc.

I don't care much whether typical or nontypical, or even how big they are.  I like to hunt the old dudes.  If his front teeth are nothing but root pegs, I'm a proud and happy hunter.

I've always liked symmetry.  I'm sure I wouldn't pass, but I really don't like crazy NT's.  Least favorite feature is the club drop tine.  I guess my ideal would be a heavy, symmetrical frame with extras...preferably a few extra symmetrical points on both sides, but a 4x4 frame with kickers would be sweet too.  Bone's pic is sweet.  Not the widest or tallest, but heavy and old, with palms and great color.  Great character.  But I'm certainly not that picky around here, or else I'd be eating tag soup most years.

I also like box frames.  Not as big of a fan of bucks that are narrow but really tall, or that angle up at 45 degrees.  Would rather have them go straight out, then straight up.  But again, I'd shoot a big tall buck any day.

You guys see this jumbo from Utah?  I'm guessing there's not a hunter in the country who'd pass this up.

Hey bone , is it a muley or blacktail. I actually like weird ones. It wasnt on the poll though. Heres what I mean by weird ones . I called this buck in . I was about 4 miles in my walk in unit by my house. Its the third one I've killed like it.

I don't ask for much, just a wide, tall, massive, symmetric, 4X4.

I like anything outside the norm. Still wait to find my big non-typical muley. Seen a couple but just not where I can hunt. Still you gotta try.

I've got a nice 4 point Whitetail mounted on the wall.  It's extremely symmetrical and only scores around 106 but I wouldn't trade it for most trophies of 170 and up because it looks so perfect and it was my first buck.
