What are folks saying about these? What do you think? I see Cabelas has their own now and its only like $129... I sure like the small size... and you can buy a pretty good little box for them too...
THanks

A good friend of mine heard bad about them so called Bushnell and talked to a guy, so, take this for what it is worth.
The guy said that on the new cameras they are having a lot of problems. A lot being shipped back for repairs (I don't know the specifics). But, the guy said that they have had nearly no problems with last years 5 mexapixel model. The color of this model was brown only, and only in 5 megapixel. They no longer make these, but can still be found in the $129 to $189 range, and often sold as "Demo" models.
He found and bought 5 of them. He let me use one and it is out in the woods, now. I have only checked it once and had a doe at like 6 feet with the infrared flash. Pic was ok. I walked in front of it at about 12 feet and it had the time to take two pictures of me.
Easy set up a big plus. I am thinking about finding a couple and pulling the trigger, but it would have to be this older model.
That is all I know about these so, like I said, take it for what it's worth.
this is the camera:

I bought one a couple of years ago when they first came out. I love mine.
The key factors for me were the fast trigger time and the IR. I did a lot of searching and found a good price and the difference between the b&w screen and the color screen was about $15 so I got the color.
I spent quite a bit of time on chasingame.com looking at reviews before I bought one. I was just over there and wow, it appears there are some serious problems with the new ones.
-
I have the newer 8MP model and it is a POS. It takes about the same quality pictures as the old Moultrie D-50's. At the $200-$250 price point, Cuddebacks are the only way to go if you want nice looking pictures.
-
I did order three of these camera's that I was talking about. The older models, 5mp. Can't hardly find them on the net, but I have got an in, thanks to my friend. I know where some are at if anyone is interested.
They are called demo models. They are the ones that Reps use to show sales people in various stores or whatever. They are brand new and sold as new. They do not come in the original box but still have the two year warranty. I bought the ones without the viewing screen, $129 a piece. $10 shipping, but he charged me 10 for all three, so, combined shipping. I am not sure what the ones with the viewing screen cost. I think they are around 140 or 150 a piece.
Anyone interested in these older Bushnell Trophy Cams, I would be happy to give you the info to place.

I am the above-mentioned friend. bwhntr350 just ordered three cameras, after I "lent" him one of mine. He sends me an email saying, "cool, now we each have 4", what a D@#K! With friends like these, who needs .............you know the rest. I will post pics and reports as I get them, but the old ones came highly recommended. Spoke to a friend at church this weekend who has the 8mp, and it continuously fires on high sensitivity setting, filling the card in less than a day. Works fine on normal setting. Not sure about any other problems first hand.
-
I bought one in early November and I used it until the first of December and then sent it back. I was too sensitive and would fill up the SD card overnight. The only way I could make it last for a few days was to set it up to take one picture every 3 minutes. They will be sending me another one. I will test it and gvie an update later. I think it had something to do with the sensitivity adjustment that was failing.
-
I have mixed feelings about the Bushnells. I have two of the 8 meg cams and I really like the sensor and trigger speed and you can't beat the battery life. BUT in my opinion the pic quality is not as good as it should be.
Here are a couple threads I started with pics from the Bushnell.

:chuckle: @ Digger :IBCOOL:
I am all taking credit for your find. OK, I am a bozo, but I still think this is a good/great deal. Digger, what did you pay for the ones with the viewing screen?

If he is setting it to high sensitivity in cold weather, that is exactly what the camera is designed to do...be more sensitive and take more pictures. :twocents:

He needs a bigger card. :chuckle:

$139.00 each.

I just remembered...our Ranger bought one and put it up a couple weeks ago... you guys reminded me of this... anyhow, he got like 750 pictures in 2 days and there wasn't a single thing on any of them!!!!
Yeah...Bigger Card!!! LMFAO!!! :chuckle:

I have the 5mp and the 8mp. Both of these cameras take great photos.
Now for the bad:
The 5mp lasted 1 1/2 years before I had problems. It takes two or three photos and then burns the battery power.
The 8mp only lasted a few months before I started having problems. It basically takes pictures continuously anytime it is on.
I have tried a lot of trail cameras ranging in price from 79.00 - 500.00 and have yet seen one make it more than two years. They get a lot of use but I am not rough on these cameras. I even have a pelican case for transporting and storing them. From now on I will probably stick with the cheaper cameras so I don't have to worry as much about whether they break or are stolen.
-
bwhnter350 or digger, I am interested in one of the cams that has a viewing screen, any chance you can hook me up with some contact info? Thanks.

So what cam is a better choice?

So what cam is a better choice?
For my money the Tasco on sale for 79.99 at cabelas right now: http://www.cabelas.com/trail-cameras-tasco-5-trail-camera-2.shtml (http://www.cabelas.com/trail-cameras-tasco-5-trail-camera-2.shtml)
I bought 5 of them this past summer. One of them just died (it had issues with the IR flash prior to quitting on me). One of them has a red tint to all the photos (no big deal). Each one of them has taken thousands of pictures for me. Don't get me wrong...I have had plenty of issues with these Tascos... but they are as small as the bushnell's and they are a lot cheaper so not as big of a deal if they get stolen or quit working. I also found the pictures to be of decent quality.
I am attaching photos of my wifes buck taken with the Tasco cam in daylight, low light and no light. Until someone can develop a camera that actually lasts more than two years (consistently) this little camera will meet my needs.

DBHAWTHORNE
Those are some nice pictures.

Dang rights that cam will meet my needs too... wow. I have a bushnell trophy full size cam that is a pain in the ass... I'd like to sell it and put the money to somethign else.
I'd like to have 199 to spend on several cams...I'd get the cudde....
-
I will also agree with what DB said, I am done with spendy cams, they all seem to never make it past 2 years without issues, weather and the changing temps plays havoc on electronics. The best cam I ever owned is the moultrie IR, the batterys lasted forever and always worked, till someone stole it! :bash:

Best overall cam I've found also.
Thinking about trying a tasco, thanks to the info from DB.

I will also buy a tasco now ;) I have some cheapo wildviews and have ahd very few issues with these. for $60 cant complain
-
I too have a bushnell pro 5mp, this year it starting messing up, lots of grey images and recently not taking pics of deer at 5 ft, but takes my picture :dunno:
-
I've heard too many bad reports on different Bushnells also. As for the Moultree's, I've seen them lately for sale in the $50 dollar range. A guys not going to be as pissed if one ends up missing. They have good customer service also if one fails.

Exactly.. I am done spending $200+ for a camera that is going to last no longer than a camera costing less than $100.
-
Pretty sure the tascos at Walmart are $50 right now.
-
Is it the small ones that fit in the palm of your hand? The last Wal-mart tascos I saw were the big ones. I have never used those.
-
Not sure.. dad said he just looked at them .. ir I know
-
I also have a 8mp bushnell that constantly takes pictures regardless of the sensitivity setting. 6000 pics in six days. 9 pics of raccoons. I think I'm gonna give them a call.

That makes the 3rd 8mp having this problem that I have heard about.
-
If your Bushnell takes that many pictures in a day then send it in and they will fix it for free. I talked to them on the phone about this issue.
-
At cabelas right now till Jan 6 th if ya spend over $150..u get $20 off, u can buy 2 of the tascos ir cams at $70 a piece if ya buy at least 2.. cams Are originally $100!

It sounds like a good deal. I can stomach a $70 camera quitting/getting stolen on me much better than a $200+ camera quitting/getting stolen.
-
No kidding .. once I had a stand, ladder sticks, feeder and a $200 cam stolen

No kidding .. once I had a stand, ladder sticks, feeder and a $200 cam stolen
Just once I wish I would walk up while someone was stealing my stuff.
-
Me too!
-
I am going to set up a dummy camera next season with the small bushnell hidden and see who is stealing cameras up where I hunt.
-
Well don't hunt and put your cam next to the road.
-
well this was on private, I was the only one allowed to hunt there and was far from the road.
I purchased the Tascos IR 5 mgps today, tiny little cams
-

Cameras/treestands get stolen that are far from any road and on private where other people shouldn't be.

i like mayn its the one thats less gb and it takes great pics (http://)

DB or whoever, post a link to the Tasco you like....

Veery bad reviews on the Tasco
I would personally give every camera I ever used bad reviews. There hasn't been one brand/type that hasn't had issues at roughly the same time/rate. That is why I now use these cheap cameras. If you want pics of animals walking on trails and you don't want the cam facing down the trail then this won't be your camera. If you are going to use bait or an area where the animal will likely stop at a approximately known point then this cam will do just fine. My failure rate for these was 1 out of 5 after one season. My failure rate for the $200 Bushnells was 1 failure out of 2 cameras for the same time frame. Issues (failure or small issue) for these cameras was 2 out of 5 after one season and 2 out of 2 for Bushnells.
-
I agree ALL the cams fail! no matter the money spent. Till they can warranty or gurantee these high end cams u will never see me purchasing these spendy cams again. I can stomach the $70 if it breaks, gets stolen or a bear.
-
I went with the older model Bushnell's that I, previously, talked about. One reason, two year warranty, pretty hard to beat that.

Generally two years is about the end of most trails cam's life. My problem is I don't want my camera in for warranty repairs during the times I am needing to use them..and it is my luck that they would be. I would rather just go buy another cheap camera. I do think the older Bushnell is better than the newer Bushnell. It should take good pics for your. The newer Bushnell has a better flash range but the older cameras range is just fine.
