Highly unlikely its a spotted owl, although they look very similar.

I don't know Owl's from my elbow, but I do have a question? Why would it be "highly unlikely ti's a spotted owl?" I'm very serious and not being a smarty pants at all. Is it in the wrong area, or is it just it's appearance that makes it unlikely, or are spotted owls just that rare?

I thought that might be your answer when I was dumb enuff to ask the question. Hell if snow owls weren't white, I wouldn't know they were different from any of the ones pictured here. Up where I live in SPokane we got this one little bitty owl, maybe like 8" tall I'd imagine, I've never got very close to him, he is either on the ground or way the hell up one of the big Yellow or Ponderosa pines I got in my yard. I've never seen an owl so small, but I'd swear thats what it is. And no Doug, I don't wanna hear that it's the extremely rare "tiny owl". :chuckle:

OK cool thanks. For all intents and purposes this one I'm referring to looks like just miniature of what we used to refer to as a "barn owl" back home. Just mini sized. Oh yeah, he's also vocal as hell at times.

Has dark eyes instead of yellow, little white streaks on brown on top of its head, brown instead of gray. likes open conifers and mixed forests, heavier canopy than where I usually see the pygmy. Name comes from it's call, which reminded people of the sound of sharpening a crosscut saw with a whetstone.

pic of a saw whet we rescued during elk season, found it in the middle of the road we think it was hit by a vehicle, it was not able to open one eye. We contacted WDFW who got us in contact with a lady in Kennewick who in turn took it to Pendlton, they rehabilitated the owl and released it where we found it.Great job! However, that is a really nice gray phase screech owl. No ear tufts on the saw whet!

We had asaw-whet two years ago that would hang out by the house. We finally figured out he was scoping the dog food dish watching for mice coming around. Owls are pretty cool.
