Title: Teanaway game management
Post by: muleyslayer#1 on January 01, 2011, 12:25:49 PM
2011 early season archery they should make it 3 point minimum and antlerless because I've never ever seen so many does in a 30 min. Time period. My dad and I saw close to a hundred does and 1 or 2 nonlegal bucks I think they should put a permit on that and buy it for $175. I got 3 yards away from 7 does and a spike Gods honest truth. I could of hit it with my fist cause it was rediculous we saw a total of almost 200 deer and we were there for 4 days I saw 4 legal bucks 3 on private and 1 I stalked on and got 80 yards but it was too far.

I dont think they should do this, not yet anyway.  They used to give out doe permits in the Teanaway but have done away with them.  I have hunted the Teanaway for the last 12 years and the past 5 years we have seen a decline in numbers where we hunt.  Hair loss hit the area, probably not as much as other areas but it did and decreased numbers.  I think the deer are still rebounding from that, and if the rest of this winter keeps hitting the area with storms that may take its toll on the herd.  I do agree that harvesting does can alter the sex ratio to a more equal state, but from what i've seen the deer have not rebounded.  I say give it a few years, assess the population (they dont conduct surveys in the Teanaway, aerial surveys for deer that is, they may do ground surveys) and then think about harvesting does to maintain the desired sex ratio.  Not everywhere in the Teanaway can you see that many deer in that short of time.   If you were hunting low you gotta know that a lot of deer out there just like elk know the private ground and when they get pressured on public ground and higher areas they often move down to private ground where they know they're safe.  Depending on your proximity you could have been witnessing this.

This is the first year in 5 years we've seen an increase finally.

$175 for a permit??? Don't you think the WDFW is getting enough of our money? Don't worry in the next couple years you'll probably need to draw just to hunt anyway, no more general season.

I agree they should give out some doe tags again.  When they did give them out it wasn' that many any ways.  I usually see hundreds of deer in a week of hunting.  In many different areas in the unit.  Once they take it away they don't usally give them back.  The state doesn't care about big game management nor do they know how to manage it compared to other states.  There priority is salmon and they don't even manage them worth a sh!t. :bash: :bash:

Doe seasons could create a situation similar to what happened in the colockum with the archery doe seasons of years past. The first year was a slaughter, does standing next to the road getting whacked. There were a LOT of deer killed and that unit is worse for it.

They need to have a more structured permit system for managing does in this state. That way, biologists can determine that the herd can support X amount of does harvested, put out that many permits, and gain revenue and management objectives at the same time.

I think allowing does to be harvested during general archery season would be a bad idea, maybe give out a few doe permits but thats it. The teanaway has good numbers now but I definately dont think it has good enough numbers to sustain a general season doe hunt like some of the okanogan units do. Some of the reason for you seeing so many does and so few legal bucks is because your hunting low. All of the bucks that time of year are still hanging out up high. I spent the first week of archery season in the teanaways high country and saw almost as many legal bucks as i did does.

archery used to be three point or better half the season and the second half was 3 point or antlerless the other half.  I don't think they should do that again.  But in every season they should give out 5 tags for each weapon or something along those lines.  Not a general antlerless hunt.

I absolutely agree with you maybe even a few more permits than that just dont make it like the okanogan units are or how the teanaway used to be with it being 3 point or anterless the latter half of the season. I think the teanaway has a great population now the and game dept. shouldnt alter any unit thats doing good because theyll mess it up just like the rest of the state lol
