I was wondering if any of you guys wear a ghillie suit when you are hunting? I was looking online and it looks like they are a trend now. I'm kind of worried that someone would mistake me for a really furry bear and shoot my a**, but I thought I'd run it by the pros first. Please let me know when you get around to it. Thanks in advance.

heres my ghillie suit I used when I was stationed in cali. I loved it but so did the birds and having a crow land on your head will wake you up. :chuckle:

A ghillie suit must be pretty good camo if the birds can't even tell the difference. Is it hard to get bird poop out of ghillie?

i wear one out coyote hunting and sometime archery,but would not do it during muzzle or a modern season,too many morons out then. i would get shot. ghillies let you move more,as they are 3d in appearance. i made my own in the army out 550 cord and burlap. it weighs a ton but i could slip up on anyone.

Maybe making your own is the way to go because they are friggin expensive. Are they easy and quiet to draw a bow in?

If you use it during the modern season, you still need 400 square inches of orange. I think those 400 inches have to be visible, but not all together--as long as visible from all sides and above the waist. You can get orange duct tape 2" wide, and cut 100 2" long strips and place them around on the ghillie. You could also just incorporate strips of orange cloth into the suit.

I don't think I'll be using one during modern season, but I think it is a good idea incorporate orange strips into it during archery also. Maybe not alot, but enough to be noticed if someone is drawing their bow in my direction.

Bear season is open from Aug 1st to November 15th in my area, it overlaps the early archery and muzzy seasons. I figure that I'm much more likely to get shot from a bear hunter than deer or elk hunter.

Thats what I'm thinking also. I don't know if its such a good idea for me to be wandering around looking like a bear, but like the guy with the birds landing on his head, it obviously has its advantages.

i have used them many times. they are amazing as to how close game will get to you if the wind is right. i have had deer within feet of me as well as bears. i took a bear in '01 when hunting a particularly open hillside for a buck that i had watched all year. there wasn't any trees available to hang a stand so a ground hunt was the only option for that particular trail. but i only would hunt that trail on a NE wind and so the night i killed the bear, that was the wind we had and the reason i was there. long story short, i shot the bear after he passed by me at 10-12 feet. that was during early archery season. that same late season, i killed that buck (142") from 5 yards with that same ghille suit. i have killed 3 other deer with one (2 in other states) as well as an out of state bear over a bait. if you play the wind, ghillies are an awesome option and add an element to the hunt that i just can't get when i hunt from a blind or treestand.

I dont recommen you to transit in them. They catch too much debree, and getting shot by a moron is a possible. I put the ghillie suit on at my stand. Wait ten minutes for the birds to start chirping, then I start making my calls. Nah never had a bird poop on me, but have had htem land on me, and one coyoto put his nose in my back. I made one years ago to turkey hunt in. works great! but for bow hunting, the design was wrong (no individual sleeves) so i made a couple leafy jackets using netting and camo fabric. my latest is good, but i need more hangy fabric. when i get home tonight, i'll see if i can get a pic up.

I think I will go ahead and get one, but I won't travel in it. I'll just put it on when I get to where I'm going. I'm also going to put some orange strips with it, just to be safe. Thanks you guys.

Fact of the matter is that animals don't pick up the pattern as much as they pick up the movement. I had a bull pass me at 3 yards this season and didn't have a ghillie suit on. What I had was the wind in my favor, no skin color showing and was motionless. Never even knew I was there and looked right at me. Besides the noise you'd generate with brush grabbing your suit would negate any benefit if there was any to begin with.

Here is a roosevelt bull a friend of mine arrowed while wearing a homemade ghillie suit. He made this ghillie suit out of military netting and mesh cloth, but quit wearing it because it was to noisy. He shot this bull back in 1995 in Oregon. At the time it was number 4 in the pope and young record book.
