Thought I'd finally post a few pics of my buck I took this past September during WA's high buck hunt. Took my nephew in on a marathon backpack trip into the Alpine Lakes wilderness and spotted this buck late on the 15th. First thing the next morning hiked to where we spotted him the prior night and on the way around the canyon we passed on a nice 4X4 which hurt, but we gambled that the buck we wanted would still be around. Sure enough, I saw the buck still in the same spot high on the canyon wall!
We missed our first two shots as he made us, but I connected as he cut below us heading for the bottom. Got down to him and saw he didn't have the typical Mule deer tail. Was this a blacktail? What was he doing way up here? Anyways, it has the exact tail of your typical blacktail but he may be a hybrid...I don't know. One side of his antlers has the normal 4X frame plus eyeguard and the other side has points coming from the mainbeam. 28" wide and very heavy horned. Weird, but I'll take it. We dropped our packs and gear and took some pics before boning it out and just about killed ourselves packing it out.
By the way, we did have our orange vests on prior to the pics, but we were getting ready to strip off the raingear to set to work.

What a beautiful buck and it sounds like you really earned him.
-
What a STUD! Congrats!

:kneel:
You The Man.......
-
Very nice buck. Could easily be a cross up there. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness crosses into what the WDFW considers blacktail country. No matter if it's a mulie, a blacktail, or a cross, that's a hell of a nice buck. Congrats.
-
Its a really nice buck, whatever it is. :)
-
Very nice buck!! Congrats Looks like it could be a Benchleg but thats a touchy word at times. :chuckle: Still a nice buck and looks like he weighed a fair amount. Love the mass!! Looks more like a blacktail since you were on the west side of the cascades.
-

-
You had that bad boy scored yet?
-
Why longarm such a nice buck :dunno:? I would be hugging it :tree1: :chuckle:. That thing is awesome...good work, and thanks for sharing .
-

-
:o Great buck
-
Thats a pig!
-
Way to go buckhole, thats a well earned trophy you won't forget. Love the mass.
-
Thanks you guys! I did keep him at arms length abit, but no one wants to see my ugly mug messing up the pretty buck;s pic anyways right?
And no, didn't have it scored...the right side is non-typ like a whitetail's rack with tines from the mainbeam. I am curious though.
-
Nice buck!!!
-
What a pig, great buck!!
-
That will look nice hanging on your wall!!!
-
Definitley a benchleg (Blackie/Mulie cross), and a beautiful one at that. Great job! A buck well earned
-
That's a stud of a buck. Looks like he is fairly young too, love the mass.
-
Right on! I like ur style...the harder u work the more memorable the hunt. Killer mass and a huge body on that sucker. U should get it scored.
-
What an awesome high country blacktail! Buck of a life time for sure. Not into inches but he's gotta score around 170 you'd think.
-
Holy crap what a stud! Check out those eyeguards! Nice....
MS
-
DUDE! Nice buck!!
-
Great buck man! Hard to beat that mass.....Sounds like your hard work paid off!!!
-
That is sure one nice hell of a buck.. Congrats to you.... I know about the pack in & out it is a killer... Great job... :brew:
-
Congrats Buckhole, thats an amazing buck there
-
That is a dandy. Nice!
-
That's got to be one of the best looking bucks I've seen..... and to earn it on the high hunt.
I salute you, sir!
-
wow! 8)
-

Impressive to say the least... That is one he!! of a unique buck... Congrats

very impressive buck, especially for a blacktail. Well done.
-

Buckhole, wonderful buck! What side of the Cascade Crest? For what it is worth, I know that the District Wildlife Bio. in Snohomish Co. took some samples from bucks like that which came back genetically as BT rather than recent generation mule deer crosses.
-
Great Buck! I love the mass.
-
man what a stud, good job way to earn it
-
WOW, that is a sweet buck. Even though you have been holding out on us, it's nice to see some fresh images and stories during the downtime.
-
Stud of a buck! Congrats
-
-
*censored*! Nice Buck!!
-
Everything about those pics is awsome...scenery, mist, huge buck, huge smile...great job. If that's a true BT you've ruined blacktail hunting for me...I'd have to kill 3 mature bucks out here on the Coast to have that many inches of tine :chuckle:
-
WHOA :o That's an awesome buck congrats!
-
That is an awesome buck!
-
Awesome buck!!! great pictures. And its nice to see some proof to there being blacktail in "muley" country. I have seen some deer that i figured migrated into our area here in the entiat during the winter that were blacktail, or blacktail cross. But had been told that there wasnt any of that over here.
-
thats a serious buck right there! looks more blacktail to me, definetly a stud buck. he would still be pretty damn big if it was all muley, thats the buck i dream about killing one day
-
Now that is a stud of a blacktail.
-
Awesome deer. Since the Alpine Lakes Wilderness spans the crest, I suspect there could be some cross breeding. Even if that were 100% mulie, it's still a hog!
-
I had the same thing happen to me back in 1993. My buck was a 20" 4x5 with real good eye guards scoring around the 125" mark. Absolutely beautiful buck you have taken there! Congrats!
-
True stud of a buck. Probally my favorite I have seen on here this year. Congrats!
-
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! Congrats!
-
Beautiful Buck, congrats.....

I don't have DNA evidence to back it up for the Entiat, but there are quite a few deer on the east side of the Cascades in WA that range anywhere from appearing "all" blacktail, to cross traits. Prevalence decreases from south to north. I killed a deer in Swakane during late archery a few years ago with a brownish coat, small ears, and a tail about half the length for width, and all black on the top surface. It looked just like the blacktails behind my house in Mossyrock when I lived in the Cowlitz valley.
-
That is an amazing buck, love the mass!
-
Absolutely great buck, congrats.

They might be sneaking off someones land thats raising bc blacktails ;) Buckhoe thats a fine deer glad he didn't get by you and out the canyon bottom :o Congrats and thanks for sharing :hello:
-
great buck...who cares what or where
-
Yes thanks for sharing, you killed a unbelievable buck. That thing is awsome, WOW. Good job on passing the other 4x4 up, not too many people pass up leagal deer.
-
Holy smokes - that thing is a tank. Great buck - and way to earn it!
-
Cascade blacktail deer  state record is 166 4/8 typical . 195 7/8 non-typ. Thats a hell of a buck. congrats
-
I don't care what it is. Its huge. Thanks for sharing.
-
What a tank! Congrats to you! I would love to hear the outcome on this buck: benchleg, muley, or blacktail. Regardless, very impressive. :)
-
...and just about killed ourselves packing it out.
I'll bet you did! The questions is will you go back to the same place next year? If you're like me you'll swear it off forever until the season approaches and then you'll decide to make the trek again. And again, and again. ;) Beautiful buck!
-
That is an absolute pig of a buck. Nice harvest.
-
A trophy for sure.
-
Lots of mass - great coloration. Awesome field phots. Very Cool - Congrats to you.
-
That is a great buck. Congrats.
-
Five pages and no flame orange police!? LOL!
Hey Man, great great buck! Looks like really pretty country too.
-
Beautiful. With its mass and coloration it looks like it is still in velvet. Then you realize how heavy it is.
-
Love the mass on that buck! Wow! Congrats!
LOVE backcountry hunts too!
-
Congrats on a heck of a buck.
-
Five pages and no flame orange police!? LOL!
I noticed that too... seems most of those snipers disappear around the time the waterfowl forums start to heat up... :dunno: Maybe it's just my imagination... :chuckle:
-
He put an end to that with his first post saying he took the orange off.
-
First thing I thought when I read this great write up......I assume if there is no orange it was simply taken off for the pictures but it is to bad a guy has to go out of his way to state it when writting up the story he is so generously sharing.
Hell of a buck, what dreams are made of!!!
-
Pure blacktail...look at the tail.
Awesome buck, congrats!!
-
Actually Benchlegs have Blacktail tails, and muley everything else... I'd call that one a Benchleg.
-
I call that one a great Washington buck, can't argue with that.
-
Its probably a cross but you'd have to have a biologist take some samples from it to b 100% still its a shooter anyday in my book.
-
Very nice buck. well done.
-
It looks like it was too fat to roll over, looks like he has a sleeping bag of fat pulled over a normal bucks body! Geez nice deer.
How much did your packs weigh on the way out and how far of a pack was it?
-
The Hunt looked amazing the animal amazing. I envy you. :kneel: Impressive to say the least. Thanks for sharing
-
Thats one hell of a bench , congrats!
-
After a closer look it is definately a awesome deer regardless. For those that care it is cross breed I'd say..check out the muley ears.
-
...and just about killed ourselves packing it out.
I'll bet you did! The questions is will you go back to the same place next year? If you're like me you'll swear it off forever until the season approaches and then you'll decide to make the trek again. And again, and again. ;) Beautiful buck!
It only takes me about a month to start dreaming about it again! Really nice "cascade bt"... very impressive! Congrats!
-
Holy chit nice buck
-
Nice lookin buck!! Congratulations!
-
IT IS ILLEGAL TO HUNT WITHOUT ORANGE ON!!!.....................just kidding. :chuckle: Awesome buck, glad you had the patience to hold out. That is tough to do sometimes.

-
looks like a new state record to me. :rockin:
state record what?
-
Congrads that is an incredible deer and great story!
(BTW, I think the SUPER majority here are not looking for orange in pictures. It makes us look fat for the camera.)
I have heard that s o m e moderators here want to start personally inspecting harvest tags prior to pictures being posted and verifying any and ALL secret hunting spots in person, you know, to keep us safe. But, that is just rumor. (j/k) :liar:
-
OK....I keep coming back to look at this animal
It has to be one of the most beautiful blacktail bucks I have ever seen. You are one fortunate hunter to have found this buck. I sure hope you are getting him scored, he has to go into the record books.
He will be mounted right???
Great job!
Fulla
-
Very nice buck, congrat's.
