Great meat hunt if you have a connection with someone that flys for Alaskan Airlines to get the meat back cheap. There is a rental place for ATV's to get to the border of the refuge or go charter a boat for hire to go on the complete back side. (I think the back side is still National Wildlife Refuge, so the ATV will only get you so far). Foot hunt your going to humping forever to get over to where the decent Caribou are, not saying there aren't any near town... A local area of information is the Aleuntian Sports Bar, don't have a number. You'll need a permit and you can call Susan Schulmeister at 907-226-4621, if she still works there if not someone will know your answers. Another number to call is the Aluet Enterprizes, LLC on Adak at 907-592-2325. People that say it is bad, most haven't hunted it or hiked all over and spiked camped, my buddy does it every year or atleast used to and had some wonderful animals come off that Island. I wanted too but never got around to it and still have my file on it, just in case................

I think you can have a better hunt on the mainland.. adak is closer to Russia than anchorage....

My buddy runs a fishing boat on the Bering Sea and they went and hunted there this year. I have some nice bou backstraps in my freezer right now.
They didn't shoot anything big at all, seemed to be a meat hunt.

I know you only asked about Adak, but have you considered other Caribou option for one heck of alot cheaper?
-
yes I have but looked into adak? I have family in wasilla, and kodiak. Have friends in sitka, homer, and valdez... Just looking honestly for a good hunt at at fair price. And to do it myself. Incombo with a BB hunt, if it worked?

Your not going to get a Black Bear on Adak, no predators except for red fox and man..... Cheapest is the haul road and then hike in past the corridor. Nobody there that I have ever seen on the hike out areas. It would cost you only gas and food. Plus along the way - past the Yukon, you'll see all the black bears you want, if you look, that can be chased with a bow.. Or save a few dollars and have an air service drop you off.
40 mile and Stesse and Taylor Hwy is best left for residents as they go when the F & G says it is open and then they close it as quick as it opens... A non-resident would never be able to plan it and time it right...

hahaha wasnt looking at chasing bb on adak, but valdez area, tok/ places I have family and friends I was born in wasilla.

Alaska Outdoors' latest episode showcased caribou hunting on Adak Island. They covered pretty much all the basics, like don't forget to bring enough money and rent ATVs.

My principal, his son, and two other friends just did it over this last Thanksgiving and they did good on meat very poor on quality animals. They flew into Adak and stayed in town, the first day they rented jeep Cherokee and didn't see a single animal. That night back in town they talked to a couple guys that rented quads. The next day they rented quads and got onto the animals, actually a couple hundred. Out of that large herd they got a couple cows and a small bull, no large bulls in the herd. Overall they got 6 animals out there and no bulls that are even worth mentioning. great meat hunt, low quality bull hunt.

I know a group of guys that went a few years ago out of the 5 of them there was 3 nice bulls shot. Everyone taged out and said there wasn't much hunting done just shooting.
