So I am pretty serious in the way that if your going to do something - do it right or not at all. So in hunting, that means a lot of planning, and even more scouting - and don't overlook the details. Find the birds, get permission, set up on the X, and usually it works out. At least for Max and Dom and I this season we have been blessed with some amazing hunts by putting forth the effort and receiving the results of some epic days afield.
This time it was a little different....I hadn't planned on hunting as of Friday at 3pm. My mortgage business was slammed all week with New Years refi requests, my wife was booked on Saturday, and with 2 girls at home plus my 2 boys, I was going to be a parent and put the hobbies on hold. So guess what happens......get home Friday night and no girls. They ended up staying at a friend house, so it's me, Max and Dom, and my wife Maria. Maria was booked on Sat so that left me to oversee the boys......hummmm, what should we do? Well, with no scouting we decided to take a shot in the dark and decided to hunt a farm near our home that had a flooded grass field. With no expectations we arrive an hour before shooting time, hop out of the car and are greeting by the encouraging whistles of Widgeon and pintail. Little did I know what would happen in the next 3 hours on an unplanned "easy hunt".

We ended up taking down 3 limits of mostly widgeon, with a pair of scaup and a pair of ringnecks thrown in for variety. The pintails proved elusive on open ground.

The next series of pictures are from when we were all finished and gathering our birds for a photo, and a widgeon swings through the spread, I told the boys to swing on the birds as it passes through and I'll take some action shots - I was hoping for it to decoy better, but he kept his distance - fun pic's though.

The boys are getting the decoy job down, we're still fine tuning their setting and decoy placement skills.
