Title: Scope suggestions
Post by: GregMcFadden on January 11, 2011, 07:17:23 PM
I am looking for a scope in the 400$ or less range.  the only big thing I am after is something in the 12oz weight range (or less) with acceptable glass and preferably mil dots or another non-open circle reticle with some form of tic marks (I.E I dislike the nikon ballistic reticles) and 4 inches or more of eye relief.  Preferably variable power with a low end power of 1.5-2X.

any suggestions?

thanks
Greg

you sir have made a very picky request  :chuckle:

not many scopes over 4 inches of eye relief. Nikon, but you have already stated that you dont want one. They dont generall come with mil dots either.

not many scope that start in the 1.5-2X power range will come with mil dots as it is a long range sort of thing. I think the only way to get that would be a customised leopould, as you can pick your reticle. that might not be in your price range but probably your best bet.

most scopes will come in around 15-16 ounces so your not giving up much weight. but if you really want 12 ounces and exceptable glass then mabye a sworo Z3 3.9x36(12 ounces and 750$)

i guess the best thing for you is to order the new Schmidt and bender 1-8x24 and have them put a mil dot reticle in it. it will only cost you about 2 grand.  :chuckle:

I'd still suggest Nikon, they do have mil-dot scopes available

For the price, I'd check something like THIS (http://www.samplelist.com/Nikon-6-18x40-Buckmaster-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-B-P1932.aspx) out. Its mil-dot, 6-18x40 and under $300

But he wants a low end power of 1.5-2x, not 6x.

I thought a leupold with a custom reticle but it doesn't appear they do that for VXII or VX3 scopes in that low end power range.

You could do a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 with their deadhold reticle(dots)...the only thing is it's 13 ounces, not 12. Eye relief 3.7-4"

MSRP is $359

Haha yea, just noticed the part about low power,..... 6-18 doesnt really fit into that category  :chuckle:

Addicted found a nice one though

I agree...mildot or ranging reticle on a 2x seems like tits on a boar. :dunno:

Vortex has scopes that run from $cheap to a whole lotta dough. Definitely covers probably all of your examples from basement to upscale  as far as quality. Customer service is top notch as is their warranty. Their Diamondback scopes are great scopes for the $$ and probably about the quality of a Leupold VX-I or so. I've got a 4-12x40 Diamondback with the deadhold reticle that is a great scope for ~$200.00.

I'll have to check into the vortex, I could live without mildot, I just am after some form of reticle that isn't just a cross.  I have not really liked the open circles used on ballistic reticles that I have seen, but if that is the only option, I'd probably go for that.  Right now I have a mueller tac2 (3x-10X) and if it had just a skosh more eye relief (or sat closer to the rifle) and had more field of view at lower magnification it would work well

I figured I was being a bit picky as I hadn't really come across anything other than some of the nikon 2-8 with the ballistic reticles.

thanks!
Greg

What caliber rifle are you putting this scope on?

30-06. had an ancient 4x redfield that had about 5% light transmission and <3in of eye relief before the mueller which other than being really dark worked ok.  with how tall the mueller stands off, it moves back enough that it gets very close to my forehead and with how the scope mounts, I have to force my head forward a bit further than is comfortable with the scope mounted as far back as it goes.  hence the desire for something in the 4" eye relief category.

throw a pistol scope on there. 20 inches of eye relief and youll never get scope bite.

I'm kinda impressed that the 30.06 didn't break the Mueller.
 :dunno:

the mueller has held up well to at this point several hundred rounds...

I'd thought about a pistol scope but I simply lack the forearm strength to hold the rifle that far off my sholder...  :chuckle:
