Title: Blonde Mallard Hen!
Post by: Quackwhacker on January 14, 2011, 06:29:59 PM
I went for a morning hunt today. Shot a couple gadwal drakes, greenheads and this odd looking hen.  She was flying with a drake.  Has anyone seen one or shot one for that matter?

I saw one just a little blonder than that one time.. Is that what you'd call a piebald mallard or part domestic?

I wonder if it could be a Mallard Pin cross?

I was thinking pintail cross also.  The bill it blue on top and kinda blotchy yellow on the bottom.  The tail feathers also had some pintail characteristics.

Looks more pin to me than mallard.   There are better duck experts on here though.

Yeah some pintail hens are very light colored.. If the legs are dark grey then I'd say pinny for sure

That looks more like a pinny to me as well, but I am not an expert by any means.

Orange feet and bigger than a pintail.

Send a pic over to taxidermy.net. They'll tell you exactly what it is.

Believe it or not, I had one similar to your's on my property yesterday and a couple of week's ago. It was lighter in the body and a tad darker in head, neck and breast. We hunted yesterday (2 people) and today (4 people, 2 blind's) and I thought that we had a pretty good chance to get it. Not so. Yesterday was another greenhead day and today was odd. One each of us that has watched it was in each blind today but, today the bird's flew totally different than they did yesterday. That's duck hunting! I thought for sure that me and my blindmate would've gotten up to 14 bird's in the first hour or so. Not the case. Didn't fire a shot. The other party got a few but not the blonde one. Tomorrow is brant/seaduck day. Maybe one of us will get it yet, who know's. That's hunting. You've gotten yourself a bird you will likely never get again. If your into "collecting" bird's to have mounted (like me) for sure get it mounted. If not take a picture and cherise that photo periodically over the year's as something that was/is rare.
