WOW they need to update that.  Some of those places don't even exist any more.  Some have changed locations, etc.

Mark hasn't been in Tenino in years if it is the mark I am thinking of (pretty sure it is).  I don't remember there being a Jonas Brothers in Seattle and there number isn't correct (trust me I just called it).

:)    Good Morning Michelle, just to set the record straight.............When I arrived in Seattle in 1970 I went to work for Jonas Brothers of Seattle (owned by the Klineburger Brothers (Bert, Gene and Chris), they then changed their name to Klineburger Brothers in the late 70's........then closed the business in the late 1990's.   They use to be the worlds largest taxidermy firm, they had over 15 master taxidermists working at the time I started...it was unbeliveable the amount of work that was produced there.

There is also a present day Jonas Brothers of New York and also a Jonas Brother of Denver :).

I have 5 ducks(teal, sprig, weigon, goldeneye and hooded merganiser) a blue grouse and 1 Rattlesnake from Jonas Brothers Seattle. Loved going there with my father.  Had huge Polar Bear towering over you when you first walked in.

HEADSHOT

What is up with editing the title and content of your Topic to something completely different?  :dunno:  Just start a new thread.

For those that tuned in late this thread was originally titled "Finding a taxi for you" and he posted a link that had a list of Washington Taxidermists.  Some of the information was out dated.  That is what my first post was based off of.

My favorite 2 taxidermists are Dustin Clark (he is THE blacktail guy IMO) and Phil Soucey ( bout the best in the buisness for Mt Lions ), to me they are a couple of the better Taxi's out there IMO.I know Dustin is a stand up guy. Never have met Buzzi yet, I was told he does outstanding work and is a good guy also.

Hey Buzzi,

I agree there use to be a Jonas Brothers in Seattle.  You told me a while back that you use to work for them.  I knew they were no longer in WA though.  I was giving a few examples of some of the info that was outdated on the link HEADSHOT provided before he changed his post.

Bearpaw I can't se how anything you said could be taken as offensive?

Lots of great ones out there, it is great to see Buzzi on here, his work is outstanding.  Charlie does awesome work as well, those are the two that I have experience with.  A great taxidermist makes an animal come back to life and both these guys do that very well.

THANKS to everyone for the welcome........I certainlly appreciate it.

The BIG POLAR BEAR that was standing in the entry way belongs to ART DUBBS of Grants Pass, Oregon.   It still is the largest Polar Bear(body wise that is)  that I know of.  I think it stood 12 feet at the top of the head.

When you guys start talking of going to Jonas Brothers when you were kids it makes me feel much older than I am, a lot of great memories of that place.

One thing to point out is that there are many in the Taxidermy field that do great work, some not as good, but of the better ones, there are many that are specialists regarding certain animals. Fish reproductions.. Birds, to differentiate that some are better with Turkeys or Ducks than they are with Pheasants. I mentioned Bruce up here in the Northern Interior, and as he is known for his great African mounts, he is excellent with all Deer species and does damn nice Bear and Cougar rugs. But he doesn't do birds or fish. Bruce is very personable and enjoys casual conversation while he works. Just drop in nearly any time.

I think that to list one's 'favorite' single taxidermist, would be an injustice to many of them that have developed specialty skills.

I've never done any business with Garth Gilden of Fidalgo Taxidermy but I've seen his work, from Moufalon to Coastal Brown Bear, to Blacktail. What he lets out the door is top notch.  He may be one of the most expensive in the NW though.

I had Bruce fix up my first deer 2 years ago and it looks like it is alive! I love showing it off and reliving the moment!
Bruce has some amazing African scenes he has created of lions attacking wildebeest and so many other plains game animals I haven't even heard of. A trip to his shop is an adventure in itself!

Most descent Taxis that have been around for a while and have a clientel built up are around a year - year and a half some even longer than that. See, there are newer guys all over the place that are under a year turn around (I used to be one of them). Me personally had a few major slow downs that put me behind, new kiddo and  been fighting tannery let downs and am trying to make up ground from that. Thats why I have put in my own mini tannery this year (not cheap) to take care of most of my own tanning. Best people to rely on is yourself. There are always going to be obstickles to hurdle, its how you hurdle them that makes a differance,  Im hoping this move help things flow a little smoother instead of waiting on capes  . I would say yes, 2 1/2 years or longer is a bit long. I agree with joe, start getting too much over that year turn around and you need to re-evaluate what you are doing as I have done. Hopefully with the changes I have made I will be able to get cought up and on track, thats tough to do sometimes. And yes, I work 7 days a week, maybee not full days but Im doing something in the shop every day.

You absolutely right. I've been tanning my own deer and elk for 10 years and I couldn't be happier. Better tan, Faster turnaround and thinner hide for more stretch and best of all if I put a hole in it I can chew my own a$$.
You'll really appreciate a good tannery when you start tanning yourself. Sometimes I wonder what kind of morons some of these tanneries hire when you get a skin back that looks like Swiss cheese. It's really not that hard. Just takes practice.

What kind of shaver did you purchase. I have a research table model and it works great I just need to change the blade every year after doing about 50 or so deer, elk and assorted african capes.

Thanks
Jeff

 :chuckle:  Joe

I have a dakota 5 Ive had for years. I used to tan all my own stuff but the past 4 years have been using a tannery. Great results from the start but had issues the past 2 years. So far so good with the in house tanning. I ended up having a wet drum built which that in itself took 3 months longer than I was told I would have it. I ordered it the end of august and got it the end of december . Seems like a guy just cant get away from setbacks sometimes  :chuckle: Got a real good supplier for my chemicals, and its nice to have  good consultant with 25 yers in the tanning industry to call with any questions I have. I hope to upgrade my flesher next year.

Charlie,

If you want to try mine one time let me know, I have the quebec lite. Works great. Once I get my 40x60 shop built I will look into the tanning process right now it is hard enough to mount a deer with a caribou antler poking me up the backside.

I just looked at that S&S, that thing is sweet.

I still dont see it, if you have less than a 100 customers, should be done with in a year with no issues, if you have over that then hire someone, for either your fleshing, repairs, or cleaning up the shop. That is what is called re-evaluation.    :twocents:

I think Charlie is doing the right thing with his own tanning process, that eliminates the turn around time for a tannery. But it adds a lot more work for each individual animal.  I wish I had the space to do it.

sorry to bust someones bubble, but if your looking to have a deer or elk head done you might give jack page of mineral lake taxidermy, his blacktails are like no other, my family has had countless blacktails done there and you get them back in under 6 months and when you hang them on the wall they look so alive that it will take you instantly back to the time you whacked it. :o

Zach at Rainier Taxidermy by far is the best IMO.  It may take him a little longer than the normal place but you get the best job out there, and the time it takes helps me pay off the mount anyway. He also does meat processing now and his jalapeno Cheddar summer sausage is to die for.

Thank you trophyhunt! i was very upset seeing zach only had one person recommend him. ive grown up with his son and lived less then a mile away being so i have spent countless nights in the shop admiring all his work. if you have seen the beautiful mounts in welchers gun shop thats his work i be leave. He takes longer but the work is worth it. I can not wait for the day i have a Buck or elk worthy of going to him. and the jalapeno cheddar summer sausage... to die for is not an exaggeration. i prefer it with the mozzarella cheese but that's just me. Highly recommend him and his processing. He doesnt advertise at all i think just google or 411 Rainer Taxidermy and it will have his number if anyone is interested.

I first started my hunting career with a dandy 5x5 blacktail buck that my employeer at the time, said deserved the best mount in the area, he took me to Peters Taxidermy, Fred and Jodie do awesome work and that buck is 20 years old this year and still gets compliments! I later went to Zach at Rainier because of a recommendation from John Welcher. Zach at Rainier Taxidermy does great work too, plus his breakfast sausage is the bomb! Both are the standard 14-18 months out. The wait is torture but the work is world class. Two years ago I met Mike White, Natures Way Taxidermy in Spanaway, I immediately liked his work, time frame and price. He has done a Shiras moose and a WT buck, both look fantastic! The buck he is finishing this month...I took it to him in November of 2010!!! I asked why so quick??? his reply was "I picked out a few guys I like who pay on time and don't give me any guff....and wanted to get their stuff done right away for them.." I was tickled!
You can't go wrong with any of these taxidermists. :twocents:

Dave Campbell is simply one of the best fish taxidermist for steelhead and salmon.  Im staring at a 26 1/2 pound native steelhead he did for my dad. Amazing show piece.

Gary Blew is great as well for fish, he did a great job on my bass replica.

Greg tubbs for all of my big game work. Outstanding stuff.

My only mount is an Elk from my Horseback MT trip. Done by Garth at Fidelgo Taxidermy.. Really love his work.. I look forward to shooting a nice duck like a Bull shoveler/Can or something else for my buddy to do... His dad was a Taxidermist, now he just does it for friends and beer.  :chuckle:

Favorite? Wow thats tough, lots of good ones out there. But my favorite animal is Bull Elk, and when I kill one to go on the wall there is not a doubt in my mind it will go to Charlie. All his work is great, but IMO his Elk are amazing.  :)

Don't have a clue on fish.

I would take a bird to WCtaxidermy if I ever get one mounted.

I will likely take my next bear to Michelle Neslon, her rugs look awesome.

My next shoulder mount will likely be done by Bucklucky, unless it is a pronghorn and then I will leave it again with Kim Lutz in Glenrock WY.

I have several shoulder mounts done by Kim, she is expensive and excellent.  I have also had deer mounts done by Greg Tubbs and Dan Yedinak, and am quite happy with both.

My favorite also happen to be Buzzi and Sandy Cook.  If nothing else, theres never a dull moment and always some lively conversation in the shop, especially if Doug's working!   :chuckle:
