Between three of us hunting buddies we have had some fantastic days in the blind but have only took three bands. Two mallards which i had no part in shooting and then this goose that me and another buddy are still fighting over who shot it. Anybody else had any luck. And for the record i shot the goose.

Neighbor's son got two on one duck his very first season this year. The dad got a $100 dollar band.
-
I've got 8-10 over the last 12 or so years, but none worth any money. I got one two years ago, sat there all morning and finally decoyed a drake and folded him as he was kicking on his back I spotted the ever elusive band. One shot one band in 5 hours of hunting, it sure livened things up!!!
WACAT

i have one band, got it a few years ago, if you want bands go up to alberta and Sask, they are ever where.
-
Thats a really cool picture. Did you or someone you know take it?
-
Thats cool. I would like to donate some of my time to the bird banding guys. If they ever need and extra couple of guys, let me know
-
I've killed hundreds of ducks and geese (strictly in WA) and have never got a single band... For those guys who are shooting them here in WA, what species are you getting the bands from?
And... do they band locally? I thought most of the banding occurred up in BC, AK and AB? If they do it locally, I wonder if DU or Washington Waterfowler's Association have any information
-
Where do you mainly duck and goose hunt? If you ain't in a fly way with alot of migrators, you'll never get a band. Alot of mallard hens are banded. Thats the most common banded bird.
-
Choclab,
I have shot ducks in Sequim, in the Skagit, near Chehalis, Potholes, and Snake River... The only flyway I haven't really been in is the Yakima or the Pacific Coast. I rarely shoot Suzies, so... that would explain some of why I'm not seeing bands.
I've seen bands on Swans' necks in the skagit.. But, I'm not going to jail for one of those (ha ha)
-
Thats an awesome picture. What a gorgeous bird.
-
Thats is strange that you havn't had any band luck at the potholes, that is a pretty decent migrator route. You'll probably be one of those people who never gets bands and shoots a double banded reward bird....lol

Me and my buddies have taken probably 300 ducks out of the reservoir and the seep lakes area over the last 10 years and none of us have any jewelery. The duck Gods do not shine on us for the bands... I did pick up a few at last year's WA Waterfowler Assoc auction, but thought it probably bad form to put them on my lanyard.
-
HAHAHA...I won't tell if you don't. I ain't to big on bands either. I only have a few. I usually put duck and goose bands on my call lanyard, and all the pheasant bands on my e-collar lanyard.

just doing the math here, you and your buddies have shot 300 over 10 years? so an average of about 10 birds per guy per year? It does have a lot to do with luck but only shooting 10 birds a year won't get many bands in the blind. Just as a rough number we average about 1 band per 100 ducks(95% mallards). Some years are different than others like 05-06 I shot one band out of over 300 ducks. My buddies were all around 4 to 7 for the same type of numbers. Last year I didn't touch one until Dec 17th, but then I shot 4 in less than 2 weeks, 3 of them in 4 days. I'm primarily hunting Yakima and the Tri-Cities areas and we get a fair mix of Alberta/BC/WA/ID/OR bands. Most of the washington birds come out of the Valley here or Potholes. I'd have to say between me and the 3 guys I hunt with the most we probably have somewhere around 125 between us since the late 80's.
Just saying you can't expect bands to fall into your lap when you're averaging 10 birds a year.
-
General,
Good point, but, we also do a lot of shooting on the Westside and down on the Snake and Columbia. We have more than doubled that number, overall. I do like the 1 per 100 ratio idea.
-
Your gonna have to show me a couple of them spots GD....LOL!!! I would like a few more bands... :chuckle:

Lots have come from the Tri-Cities area. Others are from places unknown...
Try hunting those windy and sunny days, be patient and do a little looking at greenhead legs. You'd be surprised at what you might see...
-
first cackler ever. opening day. not bad.
-
choco... invest in a good pair of binos and be patient like what General said you'd be surprised. just cuz there is a greeny in your deeks doesnt mean you have to shoot him, especially when band hunting... hunted over in kansas at a pothole for big honkers for 6 guys and a buddy with a camera, we shot 6 banded geese. it can be done, but the wind was howling and the geese were hot and heavy...
-
got one on sprig last year and a mallard the year before before that it had been 20 years since my last band and it was on a gw teal
-
A band???? Where?? Whats that???? In my 40+ years of waterfowling I have never had ONE band....I ain't quiting tho :o
-
I have shot one goose with a band and that was about 6-7 years ago.
-
I have collected 2 bands in 6 years of waterfowling, one Greenhead, and one goose.
-
I've got about five mostly off geese but when there is a dispute of who shot the bird the dog that retrieved the bird gets it on their collar
-
I'm up to about 14 in my career so far, only nineteen years old so hopefully they will keep adding up!
-
Helps when you are in a decent flyway....lol
-
I've been with groups that have killed bands back in Kansas and Illinois, but not here.....I've had the disease for about 12 years or so, never once killed a band
-
I've taken 7 in 11 years, 5 mallards 2 geese. My cousin's a guide he averages about 5 or more a season. That 1 in every hundred is banded is exactly what I've been told. One day we just happend to shoot 2 bands. Some is luck some is statistics and tactics like bino's or spotting scopes. Some guys scout out the birds in the fields and look for bands, then come back the next day and wait for them to come back.
-
No bands yet. I've been a few hunts where other hunters in my group have taken a band, but I'll just keep hunting and hope for the best.
-
Was with a group one timeon my grandparents place and killed a band out of almost every group! We ended up with a total of five on the day! Ended with zero for me, guess I wasn't shooting at the right ones.lol
-
Man I love seeing the bling bling, but seeing a total of 5 bands and not getting a little love from the duck gods that day I'd have probably tossed my gun in the water!
-
Ive taken 3 a green winged teal when I was very young (15 or 16) and a mallard 2 years ago and a sprig last year
-
First time we went goose hunting here on base my first shot took a banded goose, turns out it was only banded 12 miles up the road.

where did they say that sprig was banded?
-
pintail was hatched 06 at 41 sw pilot sta alaska by michael wege
-
Two bands, both on hen pintails. I did miss a greenhead three times and as I watched him fly up the ditch another guy wacked him clean with one shot. You guessed right, saw the guy a while later and sure enough, there was a band! Not cool...
-

hey sagerat,, do your remeber where your pintails were from?
Thanks Boomcity! I have been involved a little bit with some recent banding and love to hear the details.
-
One of them was from Grants, Alaska. The other one was also from AK but I can't find my certificate, not sure what part of the state.
-
I'll be assisting on a little pintail banding operation in the near future... Love to hear about any pintails from the Washington area...
I bet many folks run across bands this year, more so from years past ;)
-
A guy I work with said he shot a few banded pintails last year in whatcom county and one even one with a transmitter around its neck.
-
I sure hope to knock a few down this year. I just gotta start finding places that have better flyway routes.
