Title: Nooch Chrome
Post by: trippledigitss on January 19, 2011, 12:21:40 PM
Just wanted to share a couple pics of some metalheads we got last Monday on the Wynoochie. My buddy was the hot rod with 2 nice brats and a chrome nate, my other buddy got a little 4-5lber that he preferred to call a huge cut instead of a small steelhead. All I got was a darn handoff that turned out to be a really nice hat brat about 11-12# I guess.  :'( It was a great day, we had two fish on in the first 5min of the 1st drift of the morning and the bank guys were doing really well too. Going back down on the 27th to hit it again.

Nice ones! Pulling plugs or fishing bait? Ive always wanted to float that river, just haven't done it yet. Are there any good floats for drift boats?

It was Monday Jan 10th, not the 17th. And it was pretty low. Not sure if you are saying you dont believe thats where/when but thats when we were there and it was good.

Not sure about the log jam, we launched just above some bridge a few miles up from the highway and ran up to this little outfall, I think from the hatchery? I remember hearing the guide say something about Black Creek so maybe we were close? Sorry, I've fished that river 8-10 times but dont know the area very well! I always go with Casey from WatersWest Guide Service. Great guy and always puts us on fish. I took my 8yo son out there about this same time 2 years ago and he got his first steelhead out there - a 24# nate!

We were side drifting bait, mostly prawns but used some eggs for a little bit. On #4 tandem hooks with a small peach or pink corkie.

Never fished it in a drift boat and I dont know much about running a drift boat but it seems like it would be a great river for it and I see a few other guys there in them.

Sweeeeet!
Damn you are killing me!  I have this week off and all I am hearing is that everything in Thurston and Grays Harbor are blown out!

Oh know I know its the Nootch. Just playing a bit. Figured you meant the Moday before.
But yea, you launched at Black Creek. But you have to go just below the bridge to see if its passable. Looks like perfect flow and color to me. Id guess 1450 cfs. I have literally ran that river 100's of times so I know you were there. In a Jet boat from BC down we run to about 800 lowest. Hard on the troller after that. 2000 is about max for fishability. But Ill take 1500 as PRIME!

It is a good drifter river. The 2 upper drifts from were you were are really nice. Just gotta walk the boat around the diversion dam. But plenty of Warning. Lots of weekend traffic so try to hit it on weekdays. Its gonna be a zoo this Sat as its probably gonna be comin in bout then.

Anyway, great job!

I looked on the map and we launched off Wynoohee Valley Rd just past Black Cr/Geissler Rd and ran up to what I guess you call the diversion dam. On the map it shows something called Wedekind Creek, for some reason I thought it was the hatchery? We also went down below the bridge at Black Creek road to just below some other bridge down there a bit. It was a pretty high bridge and busy road so you probably know which one I mean, maybe Hwy12? But there was no log jam anywhere where we were, I dont think we went all the down to the tressle at Devonshire.

Anyway, it was awesome. And thats why we decided to go on a Monday thinking it would be alot less crowded than the weekend.

I fished the same river with Casey the day after you guys did.  They had let a bunch of water out of the dam Monday night so things were a little slower, but we still managed to get into some fish.  Great guy to fish with.
