Title: sad deal!
Post by: DBLDWN on January 19, 2011, 08:55:47 PM
Its amazing to me how arrogant and jealous people are when it comes to shed hunting. How fast a person will turn on another, how quick a person will claim an area and private property that doesnt belong to them. The posting of pictures that doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out where they were taken and then brag about them. How about we draw more attention to it! The very people that bi*%$ about others and boast their arrogance are the very people that are going to ruin it for everyone!

There is this with every thing, from hunting to fishing to shed hunting. If its private property no one can claim a area. Unless the land owner allows them to. ;) Public is public, there is nothing anyone can do to claim a area. First come first serve when it comes to shed hunting or hunting. And even them a lot of people don't care if you are there first. You better find them first or they will be in someone Else's hands.

DBLDWN, I too am fairly new to this site. That being said. You should try the intro section first, then something positive, then we will listen...maybe.

Welcome to the site. :hello:  What you've said is the sad truth.  Most of the information that anybody needs to learn where to find antlers, is in the archives of this and many other websites.  Not to point fingers at all, but all it takes is a couple minutes for one person to destroy what it's taken many others years to learn and master. :(

Have you found a public setting where you don't have to earn you stripes (or credibality), so to speak?  I think he is merely saying that people usually talk about their positive hunting, hiking, shooting, camping experiences to get to know everyone first.  Then the occassional negative rant is viewed with a grain of salt.  But proceed as you will.

In regards to your topic.  I think the arrogance and jealousy is part of all walks of life, sometimes more prevalent in certain activities or certain circles, but Shed Hunting has definitely seen an uptick in popularity over the last 5-10 years.  The popularity comes from all types as well, fanatics for hunting / scouting, those pursuing the thrill of finding the shed first, and those that use the sheds for business pursuits, such as: lighting, and art.  I think the increased demand on the past time has stressed the popular areas, and brought some less than savory people into the hobby, as does any hobby that increases in popularity.

Shed hunting was ruined years ago.  If you are just now realizing that then you probably just got into it.  The competition to find an antler is pretty intense these days.  There are a lot of guys out there who almost turn it into a full time job.

Methinks...someone doesn't like someone and decided to take it to the internet web forum to hash it out.
Just a hunch. I bet the someone that isn't liked is a member here and this has a lot to do with shed hunting in Chelan county.
Again...just a hunch.

I think hit the nail on the head!

And I think that someone is worried that the other someone is going to find an antler before they do.  Who is the jealous one here?

This is one of the main reasons I don't go out much.  It's not worth the hassle.  I agree with lowedog.  It was ruined years ago.  There is way to many people who take things to personal.  If you don't like how things are then maybe you shouldn't go out and look for sheds.  No reason to bitch.  grow a set get over it. Or man up and go out with the crowds.   :'( :'( :'(

I still enjoy it, although its a highway every were you go. There is always a chance of finding something and watching my dog look around and find em is a cool thing. I do get frustrated here and there, but I get over it and continue on down the path. THEY CANT GET EM ALL! :)

I have not posted any pics this year and I will probably just keep them to my self,  when it comes to sheds. I have learned my lesson way when it comes to sharing and posting pics, so I just enjoy em and they look good in my living room.

I just don't like the crowds.  Don't get me wrong, everyone has as much of a right to be there (assuming public ground) that I do and I certainly don't have anything against anybody for going out and looking - it's not "my" area any more than it's theirs - but I just find it a bit of a pain in the ass.  Especially those that have decided the area belongs to them.  I've run into it with mushroom pickers, too, even though I don't pick them.  They thought I might be picking them and confronted me on it even though it was Forest Service ground.  I had a friggin' rifle and orange vest on so I don't know what the guy was thinking...Point is that it can happen with anything.

I'll occassionally find a shed when I'm hiking or hunting and I'm always happy about it.  They're really cool, just not worth it to me.  If it's worth it to you, more power to you and good luck this year!

Just snowed two fresh inches last night! and its starting to snow again. I've learned through the past couple years not to take anybody out with me to the good spots. If I take anybody with me I take them to new places where i have never hiked. Just gotta hike harder and longer that's where the big ones are at!  :)

Whats really sad is all the sleds running all over that country chasing deer and stressing them on their winter range. I think there should be a ban on sleds up there personally. That would save a lot of deer a lot of stress.

I dont claim any property other than my own, I don't Bi#$% about others, I will take pictures... good luck trying to find out where,I am proud not arrogant. BIG difference!

You can't elk hunt in the Colockum and then b**ch about how someone ruined your hunt, kinda like shed hunting in th Entiat or anywhere in Chelan County for that matter. Alot of people are after the same bucks and that is just the way it is, they have just as much a right to be out there as I do. Believe it or not, there is SOMEONE that has seen every buck you have looked at this winter, it's just who can find them first.  :twocents:

OK.  Yeah, you are definitely not new to the sport.  You know though that the popularity of shed hunting has exploded in the last 10 years and especially the last 5 or so.  I only go out a few times a year anymore because it is kind of discouraging to think about going out when you know that every square inch of the old stomping grounds has been covered by dozens of people starting earlier and earlier every year.

your exactly right. the part that is frustrating is the false aqusations of sleds chasing deer, its no diffrent than riding a quad in the mission unit during the late rifle tag, the deer are migrating. and as far as popularity in old stomping grounds i believe has alot to do with, pics, posts, word of mouth etc. whats going to happen as time goes on, popularity increases and reports keep hitting wdfw they are going to start regulating shed hunting via a permit or close it down permanently, then everyone will look back and wonder what happened. Who do you blame? I personally think its around the corner.

DBLDWN-

Do you think that the sleds don't cause undue stress on the deer on the winter range?
Maybe before outlawing or regulating shed hunting, they should regulate or limit the access that the snowmobiles have?

The snowmobiles on the winter range is an issue. Maybe not from you, but it is definitely an issue. What do you suggest?
These are honest straight forward questions. I don't you from the other guy and I don't even know if you own a sled. I assume you do based on your posts and opinions on them.

I haven't seen anyone accuse anyone of chasing deer with snowmobiles that I can remember.  I do know that in certain areas I think they should close it down to sleds.  And I own a sled.  There are some places that you can go into that there isn't hardly a ridge or piece of ground that could possibly be ridden on that hasn't been.  You can get to areas with a sled and move deer a lot more than by foot.  I think that is the concern of some people and will probably get areas closed before people just hiking around.  Especially when you can see the tracks go down one hill where there hardly is any snow if any and go up another hill tearing up brush and everything to get back up into the snow.

Goes for dirt bikes being used in the same manner.  I have seen tracks from someones bike where I was amazed that they were able to get it there.

It is a lot different than using quads in the Mission unit during late rifle hunt because there is only one road in that unit that you can legally ride quads on.  Also It isn't on crucial winter range when the deer are most vulnerable and needing to conserve energy the most.  That hunt takes place in November and people aren't able to ride quads up and down every ridge that they can.

Yeah, posting pics and word of mouth can get the fire burning.  I think some people take it a little far though and are so worried about another person finding an antler they go over the top to find them first.   :twocents:

Shed hunting was ruined years ago.  If you are just now realizing that then you probably just got into it.  The competition to find an antler is pretty intense these days.  There are a lot of guys out there who almost turn it into a full time job.
not new at the sport mark, wasnt too long ago you were at the house looking for a match.

I personally have seen both sides of the spectrum, i have hiked and and rode sleds looking for sheds, on a snowmobile your limited to certain area, roads and snow covered hillsides. As you know the deer perdominately prefer south facing slopes in the winter where there is minimal to no snow at all leaving most of the north facing slopes your access, and no deer to spook on that side of the hill. Once you have reached the top off you go on foot, so that being said most to all of the winter range is south facing. on the other side ive walked from the bottom of that same mountain to the top and moved hundreds of deer to the north side of the hill. So i personally believe that snowmobiles have no adverse affects on deer and their winter range habits.

Would you agree that shed hunters, on foot or sled, do impose undue stress upon wintering deer?

I believe that if you are moving deer from one side of the mountain to another, however you do it, you are harrassing the animals for your own enlightenment of finding shed antlers.

I'm quite happy when I find a single or extremely happy when I come across a double, when I'm hiking later in the spring. I think that some shed hunters should think of the ethics of shed hunting and how you could be affecting the herd. If you're walking a slope that the animals have already passed through, fine. If you're walking into the herd and move them.. You've done something incredibly wrong.

i dont agree shed hunters cause undue stress on deer, and harrrassing is a word you have used out of context.

I have oponions on everything like any1 else and I personally have seen snowmobiles out shed hunting and some have just been riding roads and some have been boondocking all over the place looking for sheds. The hard part is were do you draw a line or what is the line. I for 1 would love to see a shed season. I think it would be funner to have an opener around the 1st of march and have a free far all in the hills, it would be very comical. The snowmobile issue is up for intertreputation, I dont own 1 and if I did I still would not use 1, because for me i need the exercise and hiking is the way i get into shape, so by the time turkey and elk horn huntin starts I am in shape to hike in, because the elk horns are way more intense than the deer horns. On a lighter note I am heading out in the morning and good luck finding em maybe I will c ya on the hill! :)

No they don't need to ban sleds, dogs, helicopters, night vision goggles, antler traps, etc. etc. etc. They need to close the wintering areas down PERIOD! Then they can make it a shotgun start in the spring like they do at Oak Creek. Make the penalties stiff to somewhat try to deter the law breakers who feel they can still enter. Then that would only leave complaining about the thieves who break laws. No ethics on styles and when and where is good. Then everyone can be happy. Sort of :chuckle:

I certainly did not use the word Harassing out of context!  When a shed hunter unbeds animals, or moves them from feeding areas where they've found refuge from predators in wintering grounds when/where they're the most vulnerable, then that IS harassment of wild animals.

Some people need to evaluate their actions/intentions.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against shed hunting. But there should be some self imposed rules even if there aren't laws against certain actions.

If that's harrassing game then we're all guilty.

what about pushing deer off of feed in hunting seasons, especially late seasons? when the deer are trying to pack on the fat for winter.

Bottom line is people need to use their heads.

Any of us are probably guilty of moving deer from beds, but seldom move a whole herd during the winter, well after even late hunting seasons. (yes, I realize that there are a few units open late in the year for permits and archers) But for the most part, shed hunting is a month and a half or two after those late hunts, well into the more vulnerable times when deer need to conserve energy to make it through the bitter cold with a lot less food than they had available other times of the year. I think there is a fine line that some shed hunters are crossing... disturbing animals unnecessarily. My posts are only to get those guys to analyze their actions and determine if there is possibility of disturbing animals unnecessarily. If so, maybe skip that ridge that day.

Another case where there needs to be "common sense" by sportsman.  :twocents:  Close it down like Oak Creek, and you will definately have those cheating the system like they do there.  70% of the decent horns will be long gone before the "shotgun start" -- I guarantee it.
