Title: Howa 1500 Trigger Adjustment
Post by: firecrotch on January 21, 2011, 04:59:30 AM
I have a Howa 1500 in 22-250 and like it so far, the only thing im not happy with is the stock trigger, its pulling a solid 8 lbs. I have not pulled it apart yet to look at it but i was wondering if it is the same/ similar mechanism as a rem. 700 trigger set up. I have adjusted a couple 700's before with the 3 set screw adjustments nuts, i dont have it down to a science yet its more of a trial and error deal  :chuckle:

i have a howa 1500 in .270 and was having the same issue, posted the same question on the other site and this is what a wise man told me.

1. Make sure the weapon is unloaded and remove the barreled action from the stock.

2. There are three screws on the Howa trigger assembly, all three are RTV'd. Remove the RTV from the front and back screws.

3. The front screw is the return spring adjustment (Pull weight): Back this screw all the way out, then install to at MINIMUM 1.5 threads. This is the lowest trigger pull setting that is recommended by Howa. It will give you around 2.5 lbs. Re-RTV the screw.

4. The rear screw is for Sear engagement. Adjusting this screw in will give you a finer engagement and less creep, adjusting it out will give you creep. RE-RTV the screw.

5. Reinstall the barreled action into the stock, place a snap cap (or
expended shell) into the chamber, cock the weapon and smack the rifle butt HARD a time or two to see if you have gone too light on the sear engagement. If you don't have any 'slap fire', your good to go.

My trigger is now a very crisp 2.8lbs with 99.9999% of the creep taken out. hope this helps.

Make sure your safety still works after you adjust it, if you go to far the safety will not engage.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard which is the same gun. The trigger couldn't be adjusted to less than 4 1/4 pounds. So I installed a Timney trigger and it's now set at 2 1/2 pounds. This was about $115, so if you can get the Howa trigger adjusted to where you want it, then just go with that. But the Timney is another option.
