What do you guys that hunt in idaho for bear use for bear bait?
-
My uncle uses leftover meat, and pastries from convience stores. He used to use shetland ponies until they made that illegal.
-
I've heard that bread and pastries are really good. Bears supposedly really like the smell and love high carb foods.
-
Bread, pastries, pies, popcorn, dogfood, oats, fryer grease, molasses and maple syrup.

A trapper/bear hunter from back east used to swear by black licorice, and/or a bottle of sambuca. I've watched him dump the bottle of sambuca down the side of a tree, or soak some fabric and hang it from a branch. He never had any shortage of bears showing up...
Of course you will need some twinkies, donuts, and other snacks to keep them there eating, but the smell of black licorice (sambuca) will bring them in.
-
Thats all we need. Some guy getting a trail cam photo of me knawing on a sambuca soaked chunk of tree bark. I think last season a fella outside of WA posted some photos of his bait "pole". If I remember he basically had a pcv pipe slicked with peanut butter, honey, and bacon grease.
-
Around here there is a lot of cheap dog food sold during bear season....no its not legal here but the feed stores sure sell a lot more of the cheap dog food during bear season :dunno: its funny how many people arent real shy about what they are using it for.."so you have dogs" "no using it for bear bait" baiting is illegal....the reply I get is only if you get caught :dunno: :dunno: lots of fighting cocks as well its funny those guys try and say they are buying chicken feed but speak such poor english they give away that they are feeding roosters for the rings ...oh well...
-
oats, corn, sugar, in the barrel you want bait that they cant run off with. this keeps them at the barrel longer too. coffee syrups and donut glazing on stick and rocks around the barrel :twocents:
MEAT = :bdid: "I don't enjoy smelling rotten meat for hours while i am hunting, and grizzlies are more likely to be on a meat sight"
-
Sweets bears love it
-
ive done alot of baiting back when it was legal, one thing bears loved more than anything was egg bagels, with a splash of anise oil
-
Beaver Meat is a great way to start a bait or charge one up!

Anise oil has the same taste as black licorice...

Please don't waste Sambuca, it's too good. Use Uzo instead. :chuckle:

Alll good choices that have been listed, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned over-ripe fruit.......like pears! Damn near impossible to beat in my opinion back in the good ole days of WA bait hunting.
-
quick side question here, not trying to jack but when was baiting banned? I've on lived in WA for 11 years and only got into hunting in the last 4 or 5.
Back on topic.....will bears come to salt licks like their hooved friends?

sure a bear will visit lick sites but they wont frequent it much, they prefer stuff that will help them put on a good layer of fat, and yes it was a sad day when they took baiting away :'(
-
Totally agree that it was a very sad day when that bill passed. When you could bait we would bring them in by putting what was left of a filleted salmon. Hang 5 or 6 of those carcuses from a tree and trying to get them as high as you can in the tree. That stink worked very good in bringing them in to you bait pile.

We never had a salmon season over here in eastern WA before 1996 though, so we had a hardtime doing that...... :chuckle:
-
A buddy down south mentioned he used corn w/ flavored syrup (italian soda type) & gummy bears with great success
-
Italian soda and gummy bears :yike: ....That's an expensive bait pile! :chuckle:
-
A couple of :tree1: :tree1:

bring them in with beaver, and the switch to something you can pack a lot of..wet cob

All of the "old timer" that i have talked to have suggested using old restaurant fry grease and putting it on dog food. The problem with that now is that the restaurants rarely give it away to get rid of it, like they used to!
-
Back in WI, we used just about anything we could get our hands on that was legal. When I lived in St. Louis, I could get hostess products, pies, ding dongs, twinkies, etc. by the truck load. Those were like gold. Fryer grease over old bread was good, shelled corn, waste candy, old donuts, etc. Pour some liquid smoke on just about anything and that'll draw them in too.

raid the grease boxes outside the resturants

Back in the early 80's when I was doing alot of baiting there was a product that came from Montana called 10 Dead Horse's. It was 2 bottles that ya poured together. As long as they were apart it was ok but when mixed you could smell it for a great distance. My hunting buddy freshened the bait one day and I hadn't told him about the stuff so he poured it to gether and then :puke:
Another good choice is the industrial packages of jello (Cherry or Lime scent carried for miles) easy to pack and all ya needed was a couple of bottles of water or a creek close to get water. Find an old rotten stump and then pour the powder on it and get wet enough to saturate the stump. Great if there was a hole in the middle,Take a chunk of bark from a tree and cover the hole. So when ya went to check to see if ya got a hit and it was working if the bark was knocked off time to sit and watch.
But since they have banned baiting here I have lost my touch! Still have all my barrels stored in case by some wild chance it ever returns but my guess is they will just stay in the stack!
-
A lot of the guys and outfits that I know run a lot of pastries and sweet stuff. Others just run bulk dog food :dunno:

Yep
-
Salt licks are illegal to use on bears in idaho its even highlighted in the regs. where the hell do you get beaver meat with out trapping them yourselves?
-
This is going sideways!!!
Same place you would hunt Cougars is my guess!! :chuckle: Just takes $$$$ :jacked:

all about quantity... some of the mentioned ideas above..u better be rich to bait that way! Key is lots of food and for it to never run out. Thats why bakerys are a good cheap option with lots of yield for what you get and the bears love it.. I also add my fav topper, but thats for me to know! :chuckle: only one place to get it here and I am the only one I have seen ever get it

one other thing to keep in mind a big bait pile is great and all but when you get ready to hunt it , allot of times you should scale back the pile, if the pile is to big a big ole boar will just hang out and let younger bears come in first, if you make the pile a bit smaller a couple weeks before you hunt it forces the big boy to come in alot sooner than he normally would other wise all the little farts will eat all of his food.

back when baiting was legal this is what worked for me....take a 55 gal drum and secure to a tree with cable.....the barrel should have some 10-12" holes in it and the lid should be secured by a lock ring to keep it in place.... fill the barrel 3/4 of the way with outdated bread you can get at any local bakery....if you have some fryer grease dump a couple gallons in along with about 5 lbs of sugar...... take some strawberry jello / strawberry soda / strawberry ice cream topping and add it to the mix.....after the bears start showing up on a regular basis all you need is the bread products to keep them coming in....i've seen 4-5 bears use the bait and can't tell when the "dominant" bear is using the bait.you probably can now with trail cams.....

this is my dads company that is just getting started. its a timer you fill the barrel with 7 way and grease. opens when you want and shuts when you want you end up training the bear to eat when you want them to.

Cool product. What kind of batteries does it use? I hard from a bear hunter that stale bred from the store and a 50 lb bag of industrial cooking sugar was the way to go. Haul the bread in put in hollow stump and them spray with a surgar water mix. was best to mix as much sugar as the water could dilute, warm water, put in a 2 liter or other bottle and spray all over stump and bread... I have also heard about the jello and anise oil...
-
When I bear baited in Alaska, I used a 55 gallon drum chained to a tree, hole cut out of the top of it, only one way into the barrel. Have it set up so that they are in your shooting lane, they reach in open up the vitals and it is a good shot for you.
I only used dog food, maple syrup mixed with chocolate syrup, you can get everything right from costco by the gallon. Instead of using a lot of scents, I would take an old pan out there, melt the crap out of the marshmellows, mix in jello and keep stirring and I would lay this all over the trees and things.
One thing you want to make sure of is EPA, yep thats right I said it. A lot of times you use grease it soaks into the ground. In Alaska everything has to be cleaned up when finished including the dirt, so would check Idaho rules out and see if this applies.
I have heard and seen a lot of different baits out there, one thing I told myself is if I am going to eat this animal, I dang sure do not want it eating spoiled meat, molded bread and other things that can go bad out there. With what I used I had bears hitting my stands within a couple of days and never had a shortage of them until I pulled my bait. Good Luck and have fun with it.

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: This is the best bait I've ever used!! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
And still do............... ;)

Some guide I saw on TV used big 55 gal barrels with small holes on the bottom of them, filled with popcorn. The popcorn would slowly come out the bottom and force the bears to eat slow, yet keep them around. Not sure how many kernals it takes to fill one of them barrels, but it looked like a neat idea.
-
I guess I'm glad baiting has been deamed illegal here... otherwise I'd probably stumble across someones sambuca pile and get shot by accident
-
On our Out of state hunts, we would take plastic milk jugs fill then half full of bacon grease. Poke a bunch of small weeping holes in the sides. Wrap them in burlap and hang them high above and out of reach on an active bait. Make sure they got some direct sun light. The sun turns them on and off switch. Will keep the scent at the bait between refreshes.
-
Over ripe cantelope will bring bears in for miles...also put cherry jello and a little water in an old coffe can and put it on a can of sterno or small backpacking stove and burn it, the smell will carry for a long ways. I used rolled ration with molasses from the feed store in a 55 gallon barrel. You can also dilute molasses and put it in a pump up sprayer and spray all the surrounding area around your bait site. Just keep in mind that what ever you use for bait your meat is going to resemble the taste. So rotten meats are a bad idea. Good luck!
-
Rotton meat never bothered the taist of the bear meat back in the 80s.... 8)

I would agree. It takes a lot more than a couple weeks of eating to change the flavor. Maybe a few months along a salmon stream, but not not a short term bait.

Look up Jess at Baitem907.com , She makes quite a few things we use up here in AK. It's the best around and pretty cost friendly too.
Other than that we use alot of popcorn and marshmallows and candy anything that's sweet. You can also go with old fryer grease most of us don't because of Brownies, but since you won't have that issue go for it.

Dig a hole 2 feet deep get some dog food and some grease (you can get it at a tavern or gas station if you just ask) then put a half bucket full of dog food and as much grease as you want into the hole then cover it up with the heaviest logs you can find. and dump some more grease on top of the logs. Bears would love it and it would easy and cheap to set up.

Good link!! If I ever get to hunt in a state where its legal, I'll definitely be giving their stuff a try
-
We used a lot of waste candy back in WI as any meat or meat byproduct was illegal. My cousin got these 50 lb blocks of Skittles and other types that came in these cardboard barrels from a factory in Iowa. We peeled off the cardboard and the candy was one solid block as hard as rock. We cabled them to trees so the bear couldn't roll them away. They would just sit there and lick it like a giant sucker.
-
Skittles and candy that must make some tasty bear meat.
-
how far from the road are you guys packing this stuff? I have looked at some places in Idaho, but wouldn't want to pack it in there. And then back out.
-
We used to hit it extremely hard in AK on two sites. Each site had a large 70 gallon (Metal) over pack barrel. Each site, during the baiting season, went through about 1000lbs of dog food, 50 gallons of cooking grease, 10 gallons of molasses, sugar, half a truck bed of day old stuff (bread, cup cakes, etc..) from the hostess factory, and every left over cake, cookie, turkey, barbecue, veggies, fruits we could get our hands on and stored in the freezer during the year. One good year we had left over NBC bomb shelter hard tack candy in 88 lbs metal boxes.... Hard work getting it going but some of the funnest times we would have with the kids and friends.. We'd drop it off the first week of May and never took a bear from our stands till the 16th of May, and totally lights out the first week of June.. The bears wouldn't eat the dog food and other stuff till their plugs came out, then holy crap keeping it full was a problem... Especially when a Griz or two would decide to camp out..... A 5 gallon honey drip always hung above to keep them always near. They started excavating the entire area within a ten yard circle, we got lucky as there was never nothing to clean... I miss baiting, it is a blast. Good luck to all of you that are able to do it in Idaho and elsewhere..
-
Coho did you ever have any issues with bears when you were restocking your bait station?
-
A couple of times for sure. It was always scary as you weren't sure what was near. Big and Brown wasn't what I wanted to see blurring towards me for sure... My son shoot two right off the barrel as we walked up on separate occasions... We had a system that seemed to work and I think the bears were really close, we would pull the boat up and two of us would always walk up 50 yards from Kenai Lake to either bait or position someone in the stand, kind of an overwatch approach, then the other would back over the hill to the boat and start up and leave and be out in the middle waiting for the shot. Alot happened 30-45 minutes after the boat left on most occasions...
Sad part was a guy gave me the stand after he ran it for 8 years, we did it for another 6 or so, the bears were super conditioned, now nobody is baiting there to my knowledge... :dunno: :dunno:
-
Wow thats pretty interesting. Yea I imagine the hair on the back of a guys neck would stand up a time or two. Its always cool to watch those guys baiting in Canada even if it is mostly for black bears.
-
If I could figure out how to do it and down load a 8mm film to You Tube. But I got cool footage of a Momma Black bear with two ankle biters eating away for about 25 minutes. Her huffing and them scrambling away and three minutes later a young Griz comes drooling and nervous like nothing else only to get Huffed out by another larger Griz a few minutes later. My buddy sat on the stand one night and had a Momma Black Bear tussle and not let down on a young Griz that eventually ran away while she stayed and ate with her young... Worst night - there were three Griz at my buddies stand and two at mine at the same time. 5 within a 1/2 mile of each other pucker factor was high for sure. He called on the radio while me and my son were trying to scare these two off the stand so we could get out and back to the boat. Then I had to go to his stand and also assist in scaring them away from his stand while he exited back to the boat. For those that will state should have shot the Brown Bear- it is illegal to off a bait station and huge tremendous fines in AK for action like that and if you got a bait station registered and all of a sudden your bringing in a brown bear for sealing, they will check your station out for sure or atleast attempt to do so... Kind of hard to get a 500-700lbs brown bear back without taken the hide off for transporting... Alot get caught each year...
