Title: Opinion Please Retumbo powder
Post by: HoofsandWings on February 06, 2011, 09:20:15 PM
It looks like it will work on a 300 rum with 165 and 180 grain bullets.

I don't have a 300 RUM but several guys I know shoot them.  Retumbo is a good choice.  Keep in mind that this cartridge was built to perform best with the 180-200 grain bullets.

The lightest bullet I've used in my 300RUM is the 168tsx with IMR-7828 but I bet Retumbo would work.
About all I load in my RUM are 200 gr Accubonds , 95.5gr of Retumbo =3175fps
The only 180's I tried were 180gr Partitions, I don't have my log book in front of me and don't remember the velocity but the accuracy wasn't impressive.
The 300 RUM realy shines with high BC 200's or 208's for long range.

We have seen Retumbo work well in 30/378 which is very similar to the RUM.

I have yet to use Retumbo, basically because I have just been a fan since I started reloading of Alliant (RL) powders.

I see more and more people turning to the slowest burning powder they can, and it seems like the slowest one out there is RL 25.. I use this for my RUM and it seems to give pretty great results. Plus I dont have to get into charges in excess of 90 grains too often with this powder..

Regardless, unless the powder is just crap overall, asking peoples opinions on it will vary because everyone's rifle likes something different.

I shoot 93.5 grains of retumbo with my 208 amax bullets around 3100fps out of my 300rum and it is extremely accurate out to 1250 yards so far
