After many years of working on getting my granfather's buck it finally happened. It was taken in the Entiat in 1946. Just over 31 inches wide. Here is a pic of my great granfather with the fresh mount and a pic of it today, it has seen better days. My plan is to get it remounted.

Awesome buck!
-
:yike: amagine running into that in the woods :'( thats the scariest hog I have ever seen
-
Great buck. Hold onto that wood backer and refinish it and include as part of your next mount. That will hold some nostalgic value for you.
-
Cool! Make sure you post a finished pic. Nice buck.
-
Very cool!

I was thinking the same thing. It still has the taxidermist info on it.

I love old pics. Great buck, and cool idea with the plaque
-
Very nice. I too have one from my great-grandfather that was killed in the late forties in N. Cali. It still has the original mount, which is not too bad considering it's been 60 some odd years. I've got the photo of him packing it out on mules too.
-
Thats cool. You should be able to get a new hide for the mount right? Thats if you want to and all. Refinish the board and put a little polish on those horns (yep, I called 'em horns) and you are set.
-
Cool buck! Glad you still have it. I would about do anything to get my grandfathers big buck mount from the 40's back. Great idea to get it re-done!
-
Hard to get much deeper of a split than that! Great mains also!

I have pictures of my dad's 1st buck...taken in 1940. It was a 6X4 mulie taken in Eastern Oregon. He dropped it off at the taxidermist and then got drafted. When he came home from WW2 the shop was closed up and he never saw it again.
-
Real cool. It will be neat to have it restored.
-
cool buck and pic!
-
I would just keep it like that :chuckle: Great Buck!
-
I was going to say when you get the new mount done to use that backboard as long as a shoulder mount will fit on it properly. Thats a cool buck!!
-
I hope to god that thing is in your house and not outside on the shop wall, If it is then WOW!
-
I think I know who is NOT going to do the remount! : ;)
-
Man I love that Vintage Hunting Photo!!! What a treasure! What a Buck!

Hey, I didnt do the origional mount man LOL! That was just rumor :chuckle:

Tore the mount apart last night, whole skull and lower jaw was used, a combo of dried grass, plaster and maybe insulation was used as "stuffing", the skull was nailed to a 1"x4" which was the form. Taxidermy in those days was sure barbaric!
-
Personally, I'd perioxide the skull and hang it inside for a while as a euro mount (taxi later). That'd really make it look big!

i think that's cool as hell.....you've got a piece of history from over 65 years ago and it was kin to you...i've only got a few pics of my granddad on my mom's side from the late 60's when they were packed in on a hunt in the north cascades....he's actually holding a blue grouse he caught bare handed. as far as my graddad on my father's side the only thing i have to remember him is the purple heart we got in WWII along with the record of him getting shot in the shoulder.....he did bring home a Soviet 7.62X25 mm Tokarev stamped 1939 CCCP that i have in the safe along with the take home paperwork.....I don't have any blood offspring myself as I married into a "pre-made" family but plan on handing it down to my granddaughter (who's now 2 going on 13) when she's old enough...love reminiscing about the "good times"...thanks for sharing

Thats pretty cool to see how Taxidermy was done back in the day.
