Title: Spring Vs. Fall Bear Hunting
Post by: huntingbg on May 11, 2008, 10:38:18 PM
Never hunted bear, but plan to this fall.

My questions for you salty bear hunters are:  Is spring bear hunting easier than fall bear hunting and which do you prefer and why.

I prefer fall. It seems that there is less competition. With everyone crammed into small gmu's during the permit season it can get crowded.

Being that I have never drawn a spring bear tag, the fall hunt is my choice they are out feeding on the berries in the cuts. I will not hunt them out on the coast past mid october due to that time of year they seem to start eating on the spawning salmon in the creeks in the area I hunt.

I prefer spring.  I hunt them in ID.  They just seem much easier to locate.

Never hunted in Spring for the bearskies...so i have to go with Fall. I would think fall would be easier...cause of the berries...maybe better coats too...cause they rub off patches sometimes when the hibernate...

I like spring. The hide is nicer in the spring as well. You do have to look for rubs in the spring.

Went on a horse ride in the Teanaway Sunday.  Saw more bear sign in the grassy river valleys than I have ever seen before.  This fall could be great.

I like the fall hunt better as there is usually another tag for different critter in your pocket.

I really prefer the spring hunt, but I am an eastsider, we typically do not see much for rubs in the areas I apply for as it is typiccally still quite cold. I have never seen more than a few bears on a single day in the fall (excluding cubs) yet in the spring there have been days that I have seen 13 different bears. I looked at over 40 bears last year before I took mine. try that in the fall....wood cutters, dirt bikers, fishermen, jeeps, grouse hunters, target shooters......too many folks for me in the fall.

I like the fall hunt. You just go find a big berry patch, find a good place to sit and eat some berries till they come. :hunter: The fall is good a time, cause you have the berries. But you'll need to find a good place out away from people. Alot of guys out on the fall hunt, but they mainly drive roads.
