Well, my wife and I decided to sell our little RV trailer that was a money pit and we never used, but we vowed to get a "good tent" that we would all be comfortable in...
Here's my thoughts.... I need a tent that will sleep 2 adults and 2 children comfortably, the children are getting big fast (9 and 11) so, its almost more like 4 adults! But not quite yet! I would love to be able to set up a couple cots for me and the Mrs., kids can sleep on ground..
I want a GOOD weatherproof tent... For several reasons. On our summer trips, there WILL be wind blown rain/thunderstorm activity and I will not tolerate water soaking our gear/clothes. I am not wanting a "4 man" tent... I am wanting something big and roomy.
I am seriously thinking Alaknak...going from our trailer to a "leetle dome tent" would suck. However, I am also considering the Big Cabelas Alaskan Outfitter style domes. Heck, the big ones are 12X12 and have 7 foot ceilings, so they would be nice, and bullet proof too.... When the weather is real good in the summer we could leave the fly nearly off or half off...
I would also like the tent to be hardy enough and weather resistant enough for me and my buddies or kids to use in Sept-Nov for deer and elk if need be.
Anyhow, got any ideas/input?? Lastly... we will commonly run camping somewhere in our van and we have a rocketbox on top...the tent needs to be somewhat packable, so a big canvas wall tent is out of the question.
Thanks much,
Ernie

Are you currently using a hitch hauler? If not a custom made one could hall a canvas wall tent, and that would still be cheaper than an RV. Sounds like your roof hauling capacity is maxed out already.

DAVIS TENT. Company out of Colorado.......
Very nice guy and will hook you up with what ever you want. He can can customize it how you want. Littel on the spend side but as long as you take care of it, should last you a lifetime......I purchased a 16X24 and could not be more pleased......

so a big canvas wall tent is out of the question.
The rocket box is on the top of the van. I just need something that will fit in there... we have a lot of room, but not enough for a wall tent. I actually have a 12XS16 wall tent, stove, etc.... but this tent is for a different purpose... Mama likes a floor too....

Springbar tents.
I have the Traveler 5 and love it. It only takes one person to set the tent up; which was a must for me! I've used it for hunting and family camping, and would buy another one in a heart beat! For hunting, my tent sleeps two with gear easily.
Check them out!

Good luck!

I have the cabelas guide model that is a 6 man that we set up 2 cots in and it still has room. It has been in some big wind and it has lots of tie downs and has held up fine.

Kodiak bow-flex. Same design as the springbar, different manufacturer. Canvas tent, sewn in floor, one man set up. Awesome tent!! :twocents:

did you think about getting a wall tent? :chuckle: :bash: :bash: lol i'm kidding, i'm in the same boat as you, need a good tent that will easily sleep 3 with gear, i have a cheap wlmart tent, but that thing is a peice of crap, it capsizes from any hint of wind, and definately isn't waterproof (even though it says that it is)
-
I think purely for a GREAT tent that will stand up to about anything and be compact to transport and such, the cabelas ak outfitter series is phenomenal... and slightly less $$ than the big name expedition tents like NF and Marmot and such...
There are some cool options. One of which is this Go Lite 5 person tent. YOu have to buy two pieces to get a "traditional" tent but it is a kick ass design... dont have name handy, but I think its their only 5 person...

I would go with the Cabelas X.W.T. it has a ton of head room and a big vestibule to stow your gear. It also is capable of 70-80 mph. winds.
-
I found an interesting one... its the Sierra Designs 6+2 WuHu (or somesuch)... 8 person, full coverage fly, nice shape... about $450....
We'll see... thanks for all the replies! (except for the wall tent guys!!!! :bash:) :chuckle: :chuckle:
