Good looking bear Sideswipe! Congrats! Any story to it? That face pic is a scary one!
-
Great bear, was it a head shot? Nice job.
-
Good-sized bear! Must've been exciting huh? Walking up on him like that? :o
-
thats a good sized bear.
congrats and thanks for posting.
-
Very very nice Sir! WELL PLAYED!
-
Nice bear! Can't wait to hear the story. Unfortunately, i wasn't drawn so have to live vicariously through all of you that have spring tags.
-
That is one heck of a bear! He looks more like 350 to me! Congratulations!
-
Yeah, congrats on the awesome bear! Since I wasn't drawn, August can't come soon enough. I already have trips planned for the whole month! :)
-
Nice looking bear! Excellent hide! Would make a nice half mount!
-
Way to make the most of your tag! Congratulations!
-
Congrats old timer!
Glad to see you connect. You have put alot of time and effort in the last year to learn more about WA bears and their habits. I have to agree with Timber in that he looks to be better then 300#. Most of the time people guess way high, but I think you are the opposite. That bear has large pads, a big melon and a thick neck..and yes.. quite the package., I may as well say it before some one else. :chuckle:
My only question (right now) is if you killed it on the 9th why did it take you so long to tell us? lol
Again, congrats.
-
Wow, that is a great bear! Congratulations.
-
I have to agree with Billy! 300+ , dandy bear!! Hope your getting it mounted ;)
-
Way to go! Glad to see you got one.
I agree with everyone else, we need the story!!!!
-
I would agree with whats been said above, any bear going 6'8" nose to tail measurement could definitely exceed 300lbs for sure, and looking at him, I would guess you have under guesstimated his weight. Congrats on a tremendous spring bear. There not a whole lot of bears that size running the woods.
-
Way to go slider, glad to see someone finally connecting on a nice Bruin in the Skagit. I have only seen one so far and that was in the road. This will be my first weekend to actually get out and hunt all weekend. Looks like a dandy for this time of year. Have you seen others? Congrats
-
That is a Great looking Bear! The hide looks real nice on him. Can't wait to hear the story behind the hunt. Congrats!

Looks like a good entry for the Hunting-Washington.com predator contest.

Looks like a good entry for the Hunting-Washington.com predator contest.
I would be interested in the size of the skull.
-
Well done Sideswipe
Bone is right, this could be the first legitimate entry in the contest, it's all up to you now. All we need is a skull size.
-
Skull size? How do I do that?
-
This should help Sideswipe.

If we had the beatles up and going I would say bring it down, but I am sure you can find someone up that way to clean it up. Just don't boil it!

Agreed. . . Don't boil it! It will shrink quite a bit.
-
You get it cleaned and I'll help you with measuring. One way or another.
-
80" length and a chest girth of 48" would put this bear between 350 -375 pounds. Nice bear!
-
I was going to say if you werent too far I could throw it in my beattles for ya and measure it. They could use another good meal.
-
Sidesweep I can help you score it, its real easy. Ill make a call tommorrow if you interested I have a buddy that has a friend how used to have beetles in Hamilton, let me know if your interested and Ill started making some calls. I can, if you dont know how skin the skull out Ill do it for you, done lots of them. Lets here the story, where you up the main line?
-
I congratulate you on filling your tag with such a fine bear. That had to be quite a thrill for you, especially being so close.
With a measurement of 80" nose to tail and a girth of 48" the chart developed by Jim Hackewiecz (who shot, measured and weighed many bears) indicates that your bear would likely have a live weight of about 365#. Please do get the skull measured. Do you know how to do that? Rufous.

Thanks for the encouraging/instructional replies. I have tried to reply w/a short story twice but managed to lose it both times. BTKR-the reason it took so long for me to post the pictures was it took me that long to make this computer do it! Yeah, I was stillhunting but on my way to a calling spot w/an "official" BTKR call.
Spotted his scat on a spur road 2 1/2 wks ago. After driving it that 1st time, I went out twice a wk-each time finding more fresh scat & only on that road. He was very consistent so I hunted this road each time I drove out to Sierra Pacific. The day I got him I was wearing a head net, OD gloves so no white skin was showing. I was lucky to have a cross wind. I was walking slowly, 3 steps & pausing, when rounding a curve I paused & looked up. When I glanced down the curve thru some brush limbs I thought I could see a stump at the side of the road although I had walked this road about 3 times now & never remembered seeing any stump there. Well the "stump" & I remained frozen staring at each other for a long 8 seconds or so. Then the stump slowly turned its head towards the downhill side of the road, immediately he turned left & took two steps across the road. I was amazed as every bear I had ever encountered before was gone at the first glance & never stopping running until way out of sight in the next drainage. I think the camo & scent control had him confused-he knew I was something moving but he didn't know what (he had spotted me first). I didn't have too much time & I put a quick shot behind the shoulders I thought (so excited I can't even remember the sight picture). The slug ended up a little high & lodged against the far shoulder blade. He went down hard. I jacked another shell into the chamber & waited-still about 30 paces away. Sure enough, in about 4 seconds he started getting up so I put another slug below & slightly behind the right ear-that explains the hole in his face. I don't think he would have gone far w/the 1st shot but being by myself I didn't want him to roll down the embankment & I owed it to him to finish it quickly.
This forum has been a lot more than entertainment for me this last year. I particularly want to thank BTKR, Shannon, Hogsniper, & Bscman for their advice & encouragement.

With lots of good people in your corner you can't go wrong. :chuckle:
Like I said before, you really put some effort into it. I think we chatted first on Bears East (and if I remember I directed you here) then we chatted on BigGameHunt and here. Always about bears habits & habitats, bear bio's and bear books. Then we met at the BTC get together and killed the better part of an hour talking about bears. I remember telling you that a couple good bears would come from the "two new units". Well it looks like your efforts paid off with a great bear.
Again, congrats.

I can't see the picture!????
