Title: I took your guys' advice, sort of.
Post by: deerslyr on February 15, 2011, 05:13:14 PM
Well the majority of the other guys on the other thread I had "one gun for the west" told me to save my money and keep the guns I had having in mind my 30/06s. I was skeptical on the idea of a 30/06 for elk, Well now that I think about it nearly all of my elk hunting is going to be done with a bow during the rut. During rifle season while im in Montana my main focus is going to be on rutting mule deer, considering hunting elk with a bow during the rut is alot more fun and some what easier IMO. So now that I thought about that, I want to keep my savage 116 270 and do a few little mods to it. If it becomes the case where I end up elk hunting with it im sure it will do just fine out to 250 yds.

My new question for you guys is what can I do to this rifle that will cost less than a new rifle? Im trying to increace my accuracy a little bit and maybe lighten it up if thats possible with out getting a new barrel or action. Ive been looking into stocks and im not sure if you can get much lighter than the factory synthetic stock, and im not sure what to get for a stock as far as making it more accurate (glass bedding??) also would it weigh it down to go ahead and get a stock designed for a detachable clip?

Also I plan on getting a new scope since the one thats on it is bigger than what i really need (3.5-10x44) I want a new scope with a bit better glass but smaller obj lens and that has a ballistic reticle. I think this would lighten it up a bit and with better glass it should gather light just as good. What would you guys suggest thats fairly light?

Im done ranting so throw some ideas at me  :chuckle: thanks

Ive got a Weatherby in .270. I put a Burris 3x9 with the burris ballistic plex. Works pretty good although ive only shot out to three hunded with it.

My buddy has the same scope on his 270 wsm so that was on my radar considering it was all that expensive. He shoots out o 500 with it and says it works great. ill look into it a bit more

Here is the scope you need, get it before they're gone:  Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bushnell174-Elite174-4200-Riflescopes/748946.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3D4200%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=4200&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products)

This is a closeout price and you won't get a better scope for $199.99. It's better than the Burris Fullfield II and some say better than a Leupold VX-II.

Go get some trigger work done if you haven't already.  Maybe a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9x40?  I have a few of them and they aren't fancy but they're bullet proof.
