Picked up the CVA Elkhorn yesterday! My Dad and I went in on the riffle and are going to start out with this muzzleloader. We are planning on getting another riffle either the same muzzleloader or the Bighorn depending on how the elkhorn shoots.
Here is our setup so far,let me know what you all think.
Muzzleloader - CVA Elkhorn
Powder - Hodgdon Triple seven
Bullets - Barnes TMZ 290 grains
Caps - RWS #11 caps
TC - bullet starter
I am excited to start a new adventure!

Its a ton O fun-Love my Bighorn

Congrats on the new gun, their a blast to shoot.

Bought my first MZ towards the end of summer last year. Ever time I squeeze the trigger there's a grinn from ear 2 ear. I'm sure you an the oldman are gonna enjoy it :twocents:
-
It will work well for you. I am shooting the same gun with the same bullets :IBCOOL:

Where did you end up buying it at? Did it come with all three nipples or did you have to purchase them?
-
Congrats. Welcome to the world of muzzle loading. No turning back now. What powder did you decide to go with?

I can't thank you all enough for steering me in the right direction,it really helped norrow down my choices!

I purchased it at the Federalway wholesale sports for $239. It came with the 209 primer installed and the musket and #11 nipple also. It also came with all the tools to change out the 209 breach plug and it was very simple to do.

Oh I forgot to mention that. I went with the triple seven and plan on using 100 grains.

MAKE SURE you put breech plug grease on that new breech plug when you put it in your gun and on the threads of the nipple you use !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do it everytime you pull the nipple and breech plug
everytime !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up! I did grease both breach plug and niple.

just purchased the elkhorn also do i need just the regular no 11 caps or the no 11 mangnum caps :dunno:
-
My elkhorn came stock with the 209 breech plug(not legal in WA),you have to change to the breech plug that accepts #11 and musket caps (should have came with the riffle) the #11 is the smaller nipple and can shoot #11 and #11 magnums. The larger nipple is for musket caps.

are the no 11 caps better than the musket caps?
-
They're not better, but they're not worse either. They're just different. The musket caps are "hotter" so COULD be more reliable in igniting your powder charge. But not necessarily. If your powder is wet I'm not sure one would do any better than the other. The musket caps are easier to handle because they're bigger so that might be an advantage. But if you use a capper with the #11's then their smaller size isn't really a hindrance at all. One advantage of the #11's over the musket caps is that they make a better seal against the nipple and I think for that reason water will not get in as easily, and if you want you can use wax to seal around the edge of the cap to make it completely waterproof. I don't believe that can be done with the musket caps.

Use the mag 11's or musket caps.

I'd like to hear more opinions. :dunno:

It all depends on who is answering the question ;) I like musket caps 1000:1 over a number #11 cap.

That sounds like a good idea. Do you use something like bore butter or is there a specific wax you prefer?
-
Candle wax- a small birthday candle.
-
Ok. I have some bees wax for bow strings that should suffice.
-
Yes that would work too.

I happen to prefer the number 11 magnum caps by RWS. Never had a hang fire...knocking on wood. I have recently switched over to the Musket caps only for ALL of my hunting partners have and now I'm constantly reloading my cappers...and I do Carry several cappers. Either way you go...carry at least two cappers if not 4. You never know when you may leave one in the truck, or your partner leaves one in the truck, or you drop your capper into a puddle...just a good idea and habit to Carry an few extras.
