If you could go on one deer hunt what species would it be for and where would it be?

There is something to be said about hunting in the convenience and relative proximity of your own home. I suppose hunting mule deer right here in the Cascade mountains would suit me just fine. Except if it was only once that would be really bad :D

at this point in my western hunting career, a hunt right in my home state is still a major deal for me. i still get huge satisfaction out of hunting right here. no need to go elsewhere yet.
give me one of the late permit tags or any of our tags with a good chance at a a good buck, i'm a happy camper.

sorry that you can't get drawn...alls i was saying is i don't have to pay big bucks to go out of state or canada to be satisfied. i'm happy here on my general hunts even, no permit needed. keeping in mind that that is my opinion and i don't expect everyone to feel the same way. you have to understand, which i understand you won't, that after growing up hunting in new york state and seeing cattle painted with orange paint so the cidiots wouldn't shoot them, i'm still in awe of the scenery and the deer we have here to hunt. i haven't even begun to scratch the surface of whats available here. whitetail, mule deer, blacktail, elk, blah blah blah. i put in for a deer tag for the very first time this year. i won't get drawn and thats fine. good luck with your tags...oh and refer to the title of the thread...one deer hunt...and then

Gawd your sensitive for an easterner, lived on the E. coast for six years. Jerking your chain dude, relax. BTW, I didn't bother posting another Cutthroat pic on the flyfishing site, a few of those guys couldn't identify their utensil with a magnifying glass -one or two had some fish smarts though. The reverse is true also, I've lived in Wa.. for 24 years consecutive now and have seen the woods shrink and fill up with hunters. It's not what it used to be. I'm just saying, I honestly do not expect to get drawn for a hunt in under 10 years, so I wouldn't have any idea what a tag like that would be like, experience wise. Though, I can say that public land hunting in Wa.. has gone Wayy down hill.

hardly...you just don't know me. i am overly cautious about what i say because i am a new yorker...through and through. if you know anything about us, you know what i mean. trying to lose that habit, but it's tough. i just keep my mouth shut if i feel like i need to.

Didn't see that. It's dang frustrating to put in for 7 years without getting drawn and I've even lowered my expectation level and put in for lesser hunt's with better odd's with no luck. I primarily hunted blacktail on the west side, my favorite spot was sold by Wheyerheuser several years ago. My next favorite spot is open only on weekends (you can see where I'm going with this). My 3rd best spot since the last time I hunted it six years ago, has gone from $12 per day access to a mandatory $300 season permit. I've invested so much dam time scouting these places out just to have them either shut down, or price me out that by the time I saved my money I said BS, I'm going out of State. If I knew private landowner's I would feel differently, but my own experience in this State leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

For me it's the Henry's in Utah or unit 10 4th season in CO, I wouldn't turn down a hunt on the Jic either though. The strip would also be high on the list. Unit 45 in ID. I want to hunt them all.

I would like to try a south of the border hunt for desert mulies and coues deer sometime.
Otherwise just give me that washington deset unit draw. please please please. :drool:

I'd go back to hunt the mountains of NW Montana in 1964-74. I grew up there and saw a few of those huge bucks, killed one right at 30" inside in '86. But GAWD some of the pics of the heavy horned 28"-34" even maybe 36" bucks that my Dad and uncles killed on a regular basis from those mountains are just amazing. Asked my Dad one time what happened to all them horns, he said they didn't mean much back then, you'd get another one the next year. Just threw them away. :puke:

I know this is an old post but thought since deer season was here and more people are thinking about deer I would post and see if it took off again.
If I could hunt deer anywhere it would be one of 3 places AZ stripe, Paunsgaunt, or about 3 units in CO Unit 54, 66, or 67 3rd rifle season not the 4th. I would have to really think about those three units in CO before I made a choice.

It's funny how horns are priceless now but not so important back then. My grandpa and great uncle hunted Thompson Ridge (near Twisp) back in the 50's, 60's and 70's and shot monsters but never even thought mounts or B & C.

I agree with ya Wea300mag, Here's some bucks taken by my grandpa, great uncle, and a doctor friend of theirs from the 1930's in the Winthrop/Twist area.

I'd say the Strip, but only because I know more about it than the other premier western units. Very isolated, nobody there, rough terrain. Glass & stalk. Sounds like fun. The downside of the Strip is that there just aren't many deer there...you might go several days without seeing a deer, let alone a gagger. But then all of a sudden some 220" monster rolls out. Funny thing though is that I apply for AZ every year but never for the Strip. The NR tags all go to guys with Max bonus points under the AZ system, which was something like 15 points this year. I'd much rather have a late coues tag every five years than wait 15 years for that tag. And frankly, at this point, I'll never catch up with all the guys from across the country who only put in for that tag on their AZ application.
I'd also like to chase them in BC. They have a 4-point min up there, which has kept the average size way up. The outfitter I hunted moose with in BC regularly takes huge bucks. The last two years he personally has taken a gross 204 and 206...both with his bow on September 2nd. How about that for getting your season started? He's also got a mounted non-typical shed set that grosses in the 250 range, so the opportunity for a ridiculous deer is there. And for those of you that troll the MM site, how about those bucks that BCBoy has taken? Unfortunately I don't have an extra $5,000 laying around, which is roughly what it costs for a NR. Maybe if the Canuck dollar goes back down to US$0.60.

Colorado for Elk. I know of a guide boasting of a 94% success rate. Elk is in the deer family but if that doesn't count. I'll stick with the giant whitetail we have in Northeastern Washington. Two years ago we harvested a 2 1/2 year old at about 265 lb on the hoof and exactly 160 lbs dressed out. (160/60% of body mass=265).

If I had my health back I would hunt the Sawtooths at the north end of Lake Chelan hands down. Best mule deer hunting IMO in this state. I hunted it for many years and dream more than a few times a year about it.

Ive been looking into this area I wanna take the boy over east to mule deer hunt. wasnt realy sure where to get into this area from looked at going from hwy 95 I believe it was near the south end of chelan and heading north tords Alta lake and tords Winthrop figured might be able to jump off someplace there but Ive aslo been told the only real way is to go in by boat uplake Chelan.

BC or sonora for me. I have hunted several good units and like other said my little spot here in WA is as much fun as anywhere. Although I would love to try BC or Sonora.

It can take years to figure out an area, where they bed, where they feed, where the bucks hang out, where the does hang out, and when they rut. So I'm going to say the same spot I always hunt for whitetail - Northeast Washington.
