Subject line says it all. Are decoy dogs legal in Washington for use in calling in coyotes?
-
No they are not.

Welcome to the site!

yea they changed it a few years ago, I have a shepard that loves to go be a decoy dog. poor thing has to stay home now :(
-
What a stupid thing to change... theyre a pest, why treat them any different?
-
when they did away with it. the Game Department said it was unethical. :yike: it was for running coyotes mainly. Rick

Yes it sucks, the way it is written I can't even take my GWP with me to a stand and have him just lay beside me and then hunt pheasants on the way back. He would keep a nose on the upwind side of the stand, hear that grumble in his throat and I'd know something was coming in .

Yeah, the WDFW decided that hunting yotes with dogs was socially unacceptable or some wording like that....... :bash:
-
I heard it had to do with dog on dog violence. Probably from over sensitive animal activists

I talked to a guy that talked to the Washington Wildlife people on this issue. The game people did not know about using dogs to lure the coyotes back to the shooter for the shot. He was told that it was OK to hunt this way with dogs. They did not want a pack of dogs chasing the coyotes down. He also asked them about any problems with using AR-15s to hunt coyotes with. They did not seem to know and referred him to the State Patrol. I do not have much faith in our Wildlife decision makers. I do not think they were placed into their appointed positions due to their vast knowledge of wildlife. :dunno: This guy that checked it out was a gun writer and trained coyote dogs.

I did not know using a AR was in question?

We were going to buy some coyote dogs and they outlawed them.... :bash: :bash: :bash:

I put out a decoy dog out several times this last year, worked great for road shooters, of course it was a montana decoy, below an eyebrow 400 yards off the road in the snow. kinda funny to hear the shooting off in the distance while at the farm. Did the same with a montana buck. funny thing is they hardly ever get hit. they work well for humans, should work for dogs too.

I think that he asked about the AR15 issue to make sure that it was not going to change as well, since he was talking to them about changes to the hunting regulations. No sense buying them if they were not going to be good for coyote hunting. He also wrote for an AR magazine.

OK, I'll bite. What's a "Montana Decoy"? Well, I did look it up and found a company by that name, so I suppose that's it. A good, realistic decoy.
I was hoping for something a little more "interesting", like maybe a carcass strung up with some sticks and wire. You never know about those Montanans.

its a yote decoy, intented for trespassing road shooters, not yotes.

The law states it is unlawful to hunt or pursue coyotes with dogs. So, even as a decoy would be unlawful. As far as hunting coyotes with an AR, it is legal. Coyotes are unclassified, you can hunt them with a small game or big game license, and there is no restriction on firearms for coyotes.
