Title: getting ready...
Post by: jackelope on May 17, 2008, 08:19:10 PM: the mountain bike is at the bike shop getting tuned up and dialed in and the bow is at the nock point getting new string, cables, rest, paper tune, arrows re-wrapped and fletched and dialed in. i am getting fired up for my first archery hunting season ever this year.

now if i can just figure out where i'm hunting.

I have busted up some shafts and some kids borrowed my arrows permanently so I am going to put the jigs to work soon to turn out some new arrows. Glad I have a stick bow. Not much tuning needed. The problem for me is that I have to find time to hunt elk and then I have to find some elk to hunt.

Post by: jackelope on May 17, 2008, 09:49:19 PM: my bike had some issues that i didn't want to mess with for reliability reasons. my bike is another toy i haven't used much in the last couple years, and my intent is to get into riding to get in shape and access some wetside elk areas, so i don't want it to be breaking because i didn't do something right.

i am trying to decide wether or not to get the jigs and stuff to build my own arrows. not sure if i shoot enough to justify buying the stuff needed to get it done. i don't have enough room as it is for my fly-tying stuff, so i haven't gotten into reloading or building my own arrows yet.

I shoot my bow basically every day more for fun than true practice. I like being able to diagnose my form issues and equipment problems. I've got all the tools and equipment to work on bows now, and I spend quite a bit of time in my shop working on mine or one of my buddies' bows. I shoot 3D pretty much each weekend and love doing that. I would like to think that my shooting skills for hunting are being sharpened when I'm practicing hard for 3D shoots, but I'm relatively proficient in the woods, also. I've been bowhunting for 22 years now and wouldn't trade a minute of the time I've put into it for anything. All the effort and money put into archery is worth it to me for a scraggly mule deer doe or a bear or turkey, or whatever else. The chances of drawing a tag here in WA don't bode well for shooting a bull every year, but that's fine with me because I have just as much fun calling and videoing for someone who is lucky in the draw. If I don't draw here, then I'm off to Idaho again on another adventure!

You and me both. I've been shooting the new Parker as much as possible. I am going to get some of my first scouting in this year next weekend. I made the mistake of having my bike serviced at Center Cycle, they actually TOOK our bolted on drink holders and didn't give them back and charged us $150 for doing jack *censored* to our bikes, still squeak, still rub. Likely won't be using mine for hunting this year though.

Sorry to hear that. I found a lot of places are like that. When I found a good mechanic I used them for all my business. I have had good luck at Sammamish cycle and also at the Performance Bicycle shop in redmond.

where are you shooting your bow?

:bash: I already need to go get more arrows. I bought a dozen and only got 6 of them. Screwed one of them last weekend and I'm sure it wont be the last befor hunting season. Their goes another $120.

im gonna buy a mountain bike aswell for scouting this season and to get in some gates i found last season for deer that were locked.

I haven't even got my bow out yet. I know I need a new string and need to order that. Then I'll have to retune etc. Then I need new arrows and my honey do list is still long... Then I don't have a hunting partner/shooting buddy now that my cousin is going to Iraq. To top it off it's halibut and lingcod season and my boat is still in the shop. I'm a mess and way behind this year.

Post by: Ray on May 28, 2008, 08:39:05 PM: Redmond Cycle is ok. I have not had much work done there but what they did was fair and good. Gerk's Alpine hut on the other hand I have had mixed experience with. They told me one time that my whole bike needed a new sprocket, chain and rear wheel gears when I asked them to put on a new chain. I took my bike home and put on a new chain myself to fix the issue. At that moment I decided to start tuning my own bikes. I still let shops work on them but for the most part I do a lot of the work myself. The tools are cheap and it only takes a little bit of effort. I ride 12-14 miles a day 3-5 days a week.

I got some new arrows just about ready to put some broadheads on. Those should arrive next week.

Post by: Ray on May 28, 2008, 08:44:37 PM: Here is one of my bikes which I ordered each item seperately and assembled myself. It takes mountain bike and street tires or even rims of different sizes. Just have to adjust the brakes real quick.

Post by: Ray on May 28, 2008, 08:49:22 PM: I used to have two treks. One I liked and one that I didn't. I still think that if you are not using it to commute or for real hardcore recreation that a cheapo would be your best bet. As in one that got run over by your wife last week.

what do you guys think about one of those suspension seatposts?
i need to get me an old guy seat...that thing thats on there now is brutal.

Im cheep on the bicycle front I see all of the expensive rides and they are nice but Id rather have custom rifles/bows and cool hunting trips :dunno:

Must mean I am softcore........I was thinking about commuting...20 some miles to work and then back, but the Wenas wind would KILLLLLLLL me.

Almost down to three months. Might be the first year I don't have to buy gear, nothing I have to have but probably will find something I think I need. :)
