Well I finally scored today, pretty tired after the 12 miles and endless sun beating down on me, so Ill fill you all in, tommorrow with a great story and pictures. Just a little teaser, Hogsniper and I seen a total of 10 bears on Friday, and I got some incredible footage of a very unafraid and dangerous bear this morning, I get a link up once I get it loaded to youtube. To bed for now, and a story tommorrow.
-
Great job, Cant Wait! Go to bed!

Can't wait to see..... Congrats!
-
Is this going to be a contender for the Predator contest?
-
Where abouts did you find the bulk of the animals? Anywhere we discussed? 12 miles of hiking should have put you past the slide we fixed and into a pretty decent area.....but then again there's a lot of land and a lot of bears up there. We're going to start planting above cavanah creek and by the sisters in the next 2 weeks so I'll let you know if you there's a bigger one left for next fall :chuckle:
-
Well since I started this thread, I suppose I better not leave you guys hanging. I started out by getting the clearance from the wife to hunt all weekend Friday-Sunday. This would be last weekend to get out and harvest my spring bear. 4:00 oclock rolled around pretty early on friday and out the door I went, picked up hogsniper and we were on our way. Went up to a spot I had seen a bear last thursday and drove the road in. That morning we seen 2 different bears in the road foraging on fresh spring grass but they were gone before I could get a clear shot, then the heat set in, went back to the house reorganized some gear and headed back up at 4:30pm. That evening we seen a total of eight bears in the road, the same road we had driven in the morning, bad Idea to drive it again it is very diffcult to get anything but a Texas heart shot when road hunting bear, so Friday ended up being a bust. We did see to bruiser bears, both that I can say confidently were over 300lb and one had a huge blonde patch on his chest. We also video a sow and two yearlings that evening, I did the ethical thing and didnt take her, llI post a video clip of her later. Fridays tally 10 bear, not a bad day for the 80 degree weather. Saturday morning I picked up my hunting partner Jeremy and hit the gate, we walked this time hoping to find a few of the bears we had seen the night before, at the 1.5 mile mark while glassing I caught some movement in the timber, we got down in the road had the camera rolling and out walked about a 200lb boar. I decided to pass on him after all the bear I had seen the night before. We videod him for about 5 minutes then started making some squeking noises and here he came, 25 yards later and he was getting to close I stood up and started talking to him, with him not being afraid he did a little false charge thing and then walked over to a tree and jumped up it about 6 feet or so hanging on looking at us drooling, finally chased him off and back to the brush he went. We packed up looked over in the brush and there he was just staring at us sitting on his ass, we got out of there before, I had to shot him in self defense. Six miles up the grade and six back, and only one bear sighting, a little dissapointed especially with the sore foot now. We were back at the truck by 12:00 and it was hot. My partner had to be back, after dropping him off a buddy called and asked if I wanted to hop in and go look for some sheds and bear up a couple other roads, I met up with him at 1:00 and hit the Cadilac road, up Baker Lake highway. We werent up there 3 miles and there goes a bear walking around the bend in the road. I hoped out loaded the gun and ran up the road and peeked around the corner there he was feeding on fresh grass at 1:30 in the afternoon with temperatures pushing 90. He looked big, I got a solid rest and squeezed one off, click. Damit I didnt put one in the chamber, bolt comes open and the cartridge wont push out of the clip, talk about frustarting finally I dig one out, chamber it hold tight on the base of the neck and squeeze, BOOM and he folds. BBD I run up to him find he is only paralized and put him out of his misery. So after hiking 12 miles in the morning and not firing a round, to driving around in mid afternoon it just doesnt seem right to shot one from the pickup and drop it in the road, but thats how it happened. These Berger VLD bullets sure do some damage the exit side of his neck was absolute burger. This evening Ill post up some video of the sow with cubs and the problem boar, and a short clip of my bear after it was shot. Oh ya I actually brought the bear out whole and weighed him guts and all, any guess on the weight? Ill post tonight what he actually weighed. The guys taking the pictures, dont have much experience so they arent the greatest, sorry.

Thats an absolutely perfect bear Sir! Thats the kind of trophy a man gets by passing on dozens to find the right one!
He is beautiful and you should be very proud!
Id guess 355 just to get the ball rolling... cant weight to hear what the wait was ;) ;)
nice job bro
you gonna rug him or what? Ive decided now that I have a rug they are all gonna be 1/2 or 3/4 body wall pedestals.
any way
beautiful bear bro... thats the 2nd beautiful bear killed by members this spring!
nice
-
Nice bear and photos ....thanks for sharing. I'll say 375....looks to be big.
-
Nice bear and the pictures are great. Congratulations! It's probably a good thing you got it from the road with it being as hot as it was yesterday.
-
VERY NICE!!! I'll say 275? ;)
-
Well done! I guess 325#. Did you happen to get any measurements (girth, length nose to tail, length front claw to front claw)? I do not mind taking an easy bear considering how many miles I usually log before killing one. Sometimes they come easy, most often they come hard. Rufous.
-
Thanks guys, remember take this into account these bears have no fat on them right now, I was actually pretty surpirsed of his weight after weighing him, its a big eye opener on actual bear weights.
Heres a chuck adams pose for ya :chuckle:

-
Nice bear James! That exit wound is pretty devistating looking! Hard to judge in the photos but If I had to guess I'd say between 275 and pushing 300? I have no idea! Great looking bear! What are you going to do with it?

Nice job! I'll guess 320.
-
Man, you saw more bear in a few days then I may have all my life. I think you need a personal photographer to go with you next time... Great job.
-
Nice Bear! My guess is 260.
-
I am definately in Bucklucky's ballpark. I figured about 255-260. I guess thats lowball to most. No matter, its a great lookng bear. I'd hate to have to deal with one in this heat. Holycow....sort of like hunting in August.
-
Nice job James, nice to see a local boy put use to that permit. I will have to say 250.
-
Thats A good sized bear. Looks big!!! Hard to say but I want to think right about 315#
-
If you're calling it big that should put it over 300 :chuckle: so I'd say something like 338.
-
Without a dought that is a keeper.....great bear man, a true once in a life time dude..........
-
I'm more interested on the green score on that head. Heck with how much he weighs.
-
im with you on this one bone, who cares how much it weighs? wondering how much of that head is fat and muscles and how much is big skull.. but to go along with it, 270 sumthin..
-
Man...what a beauty! Chowdered him good. Congrats and what a great rug he will make. Ill say 245 lbs.
-

Justin
-
Nice bear and thanks for the story
-
Well guys bone wins it again, then costalghost. I was rather dissapointed when I seen the needle on the scale. He weighs in at excatly 256lbs. I thought he was damn close to 300 but hes not. This goes to show all of you how hard bear truly are to estimate the size of. And I honestly felt like the pictures didnt do the bear justice. Im sure he would have been a 300lb in the fall, he had no fat on him at all. Ill get that green score skull measurement to you guys in a while. I had no time to cape the skull out before the hide would slip and the meat spoil, so the cape and skull went straight to the freezer so I wouldnt lose it. Probably be a couple weeks before I thaw it. Cowboy I was thinking of doing a full body mount but after I seen what he actually weighd I may just do a shoulder mount, but I did skin him for a rug or full body. Thanks guys
-
Awesome bear, sure looked like it was much bigger. Congrats
-
Nice job! Im gonna guess 335 :dunno: Looks like he has a nice coat. You definitely put the hurt on em.
MS
-
Awww! Thats what I get for ignoring the "someone has posted while you are reading" !! Great bear to say the least.
MS
-
I guess I'll start the skull guestimate at 18 1/8" :dunno:
MS

:whoo:
Most folks always guess WAY big on bear. A 300 pound bear is a BIG bear. I bet he'd have hit it by this fall. He is a very nice trophy. I'm glad you got him into a freezer QUICK.
-
Great looking bear. Makes me want to get out now. Can't wait till august. :)
-
I have changed my way of thinking now, I always thought that a 300lb was a big bear, but Ive lowered my standards to 250 now. :chuckle:
-
Just wait until you run into that RARE 400 pounder. You'll crap your drawers.
-
I tried to get the actual bear hug picture and get the thing off the ground it just wasnt happening :bdid: I cant imagine actually seeing a 400lb on the ground
-
I bet 90 percent of the bear killed in this state go at or under 200 pounds, and a good percentage of those are at least double that weight by the hunter that doesn't scale them. I think you are in the running for that big predator contest. This one is a contender I am sure.
-
Thats funny. Save your back for big fish.
-
Nice bear :) enjoyed the story too! thanks
-
Nice looking bear! I would have guessed high 200's, regardless will make an excellent half mount! Niceley done!
-
I tried to get the actual bear hug picture and get the thing off the ground it just wasnt happening :bdid: I cant imagine actually seeing a 400lb on the ground
I got a 380# field dressed (over 400 live) and he was a tank.
-
Congratulations on a great bear! You earned it. Good job with the story too. 256lbs is big for a spring bear.
-
Nice job!! Now I see the face behind the msg's. It looks every bit big as mine. You write a pretty good story as well!
-
Not many people have the opportunity to weigh the whole bear. I have never been able to do that. I have weighed the four legs though on a number of bears that I and friends have shot as well as taken girth measurements. I have come up with a formula that I think is in the ball park of comparing leg weight to live weight. When I weigh the legs they have obviously been skinned out and are minus the feet so the ankle joint has been cut through. I think that the 4 legs multiplied by 3.3 might be a close estimate for live weight. My biggest had legs weighing 120# and my first bear's legs weighed 104#. My brother's biggest bear's legs weighed 107#.
I do not suppose you have the ability to weigh just the 4 legs as described? If you can I would love to know what they weigh compared to the live weight. Thanks, Rufous.
-
Great bear especially for the spring, imagine that pig in the fall after he was floating high on berries and everything else for the winter prep.... Curious- many or any rubbed out spots and thin areas? How bout the tops of the paws, worn down or pretty thick? Did you measure the skull? What was the melon size? My guess will be 18 and 1/4".
-
That's a BIG bear. From den emergence to fall hibernation, it is not uncommon for a bear to increase it's spring weight 50-60% (except for lactating females, and this is the main reason they don't have cubs every year; they're a huge energy drain). A genuine 400lb fall bear probably came out of the den around 250. A genuine 300lb SPRING bear may go 500lbs in the fall, and is a rare bear.
-
Being a Taxidermist I see alot of people mis judging the weight on Bear. People dont realize what a 400 pound bear really looks like. BTKR has a picture of his 380 pound gutted bear on hear and It looks like a black grizz! Its nice to see pics of bears that have actually been weighed. Again , nice bear.
-
Thanks everyone, no the bear didnt have any rubbed spots. It took a couple hours to get the video of one of the bears on youtube, but Ill start a new thread with the link here in a minute.
-
-
Cool video!!
-
After watching that, I realized I do not know jack about sizing or on the huff weighing of bears.
Next time I am out calling bears and not having any luck with my keeii call I will try blowing it kisses? LOL
awesome video
-
Blowing kisses is commonly used in stopping yotes... ;)
-
I love chasing bears up trees there such sissy's...... :chuckle:
Great video and nice work letting the smaller bear walk and smacking the bruiser

That's a BIG bear. From den emergence to fall hibernation, it is not uncommon for a bear to increase it's spring weight 50-60%. A genuine 400lb fall bear probably came out of the den around 250. A genuine 300lb SPRING bear may go 500lbs in the fall, and is a rare bear.
Not trying to be difficult or "row upriver" but I don't subscribe to that theory 100%. I have seen a few spring bears with over 100 lbs of fat on them (2+ inches) and I don't buy the statement that that same bear will gain another 100 lbs or even 40% of it's weight.
My biggest was a spring bear that dressed at 380 lbs. He had a couple inches of fat from his rear to his head. Easily close to 100 lbs of fat. There is no way that he was going to gain another 100+ ( or 200lbs if 50%) by the fall.
Now he may regain 100 - 150 lbs after losing 100 or so during the spring and fall.
-
Very cool James!!! Great pics, vid, and story.
-
James- Nice bear! Loved the video and story!
-
That was awesome. I think that bear was sweet on you, it responded well to your kisses. :chuckle:
-
Nice Bear, Congrats! :chuckle:
-
nice job james.
-
NICE BEAR CONGRATS
-
Nice lookin bear! Sounds like some good times. Like the video too! Bears looked bigger to me. Then again I thought mine was closer to 400.
-
Sweet!! Congrats to ya brotha!! One more thing to be jealouos about I guess. :)
-
Way to go. That thing is incredible.
