I just got back from visiting with Shawn Carlock at Defensive Edge Gunsmithing.
He was telling me about a new custom long range rifle he is putting into production.
The thing is sweet! The bolt is back in the stock so the overall length of the rifle is much shorter.
Check this thing out! This one is left handed, so that's why it looks backwards.
Shawn is a wealth of information on rifles and long range shooting and makes some AWESOME rifles. I am watching his DVD "Send It 2" right now and I cant believe the shots they are making!

Nice! There are sooo may new long range rifle builders these days, that a guy tends to lose track!

Aint that the truth!
I have been talking to a lot of guys about some of these rifles and Shawns knowledge on the topic blew my mind.. :o

What's the weight of that rig all set up?.......if you know
-
very interesting set up. I am intrigued to say the least.
-
I have always wanted a .338 edge built by Carlock. The sub 1/2 moa out of his guns is way better than I could shoot them. Yeah, some of the shots I have seen him make on longrangehunting were impressive to say the least.
-
i think i saw a rifle very similar to this a little while back on the history channel. it was number 1 or number 2 best sniper rifle, chambered to a weird 6.5 caliber. :dunno:

Its not light. I think close to 14 pounds with the Nightforce, bipod, ect :dunno:

Me too, Me too... I thought one of his "Canyon" rifles would be the way to go, but this new thing is sweet!

Do you know how long the barrel is?
-
Oh yeah......
-
Do you know how long the barrel is?
30"
-
awesome length, you can get the benefit of a magnum cartridge and slow powder..... ;)
-
carlock is the real deal. we are lucky to have him so close.

Yeah! I was so excited to find out he is just down the road from me.. 8)

He makes some of the best guns out there as far as I am concerned. I have really been looking into his 338 edge. I was up tell about 3 a.m this morning searching and reading on it. Hard to drop 3k+ on a rifle, but his rifles are worth the money. Did he say what the new one is going to be selling for Matt? The rifle I want is about 3,800.00 from him :o :chuckle:

I think this new one is closer for the 6K mark :o
Yeah, he has some killer rifles.. Ive been reading about his Canyon Rifle and its supposed to shoot out of this world.
I have been reading up on Shawn some today. He is like the Dalai Lama of Long range rifles. :o
-
:chuckle: See if you can get a package deal for 2 of them :lol4: Thats just pocket change :yike:
-
Shawn makes a hell of a rifle. We are good friends with him and he has helped us out alot while building our business. 338 Edge's are alot of fun to play with. I build more of them then any other caliber that I build now. They always shoot well under 1/2moa and are extremely easy to load for. Not to mention, I personally have 3 of them :chuckle:

nice, feel free to pm me with what you think of the dvd, it would be much appreciated

His rifles are nice. Same components I use in my rifles: 700 actions, hart barrels, hs precision stocks, and nightforce scopes. Buy your own components and find a good smith, you can save yourself 1500 bucks.

Im a long time tournament archer and love shooting long range with my bow. When I started researching what is involved to make these long range shots with a rifle my precision side because VERY intrigued :dunno:
-
I am in the same boat as you I also archery hunt but am still learning, I have harvested one buck with a bow but I limit my longest shots on deer to about 40 yards cause I just do not have the skill yet for any farther out.
back on to the topic though, HOLY CRAP that is a long shot!

How light can one of these types of guns be made? I'd rather give up some distance that haul 14 pounds over hill and dale.

Im not sure about that exact model,
But Shawn makes some Sheep hunting rifles that are VERY light and still can shoot a heck of a long ways
-
Looking at their website it looks like their Grand Slam rifle comes in at 5.9 lbs, and a couple others around the 6 lb mark.

Bob, I think the point of those guns is so you don't have to hike with it. Link your scope to the satellite....download the GPS and National Weather Service data....fire.....go get animal. :chuckle:
I had a buddy bring a 30+lb .50 BMG cougar hunting this year....after the first river crossing and mountain climb in the Queets rainforest he was cursing his choice of rifle. But as the weight drops, the recoil will increase. And it appears they are firing some cartridges that pack a bang, so they've probably found a tolerable weight for both packing and recoil.
-
ya I would rather take the recoil then carry the weight, get a recoil reducer but pad for the rifle

Ill take the weight, my shoulder is wimpy! :chuckle:
-
they make a shoulder pad that looks lightweight, but Im not a big fan of hard recoil either, just bought a 300 win mag only put 15 rounds through it and had to send it back to remington but I started feeling it after a 5 shot group
