The last few days I've been hiding a few sheds around the house in the woods and the neighboring fields for the dog to find, he gets a treat when he brings them to me and he's starting to get pretty good at it.  This seems like a pretty good reason to get out in the woods and stomp around I think I'll give shed hunting a try. The few sheds I have now I have found while deer or elk hunting. The last shed hunter I talked to said there weren't any sheds on the Eastside so I should stay west of the Cascades.  :dunno:

Any advice from you guys that use dogs for shed hunting? do you ever run accross a shed stuck in the brush that the dog can't work out.

who usually finds more sheds, you or the dog?

Good deal. I would try to work with the wind in the dogs face. Kinda like hunting birds. It helps them catch the scent better that way.

Plenty of sheds on the east side, people are just protective of them. Finding blacktail sheds or rosie sheds are cool though. If you're going to hunt sheds on the east side with your dog in the coming months BEWARE the ticks. Check him constantly and get good flea/tick medicine for him. Thats awesome that he's finding them for you, my black lab found a couple last year, I was as proud as a papa could be.

That's how I got my pup started.  She is really starting to get the hang of it now after a month of looking for the real thing

Shed hunting dogs are going for big $ on the gundog websites, most labs trained to find sheds start at about $4000.00

wow my lab cost me 250 and he is a shed getting fool. Plus he is an awsome duck retreiver. They wanted another 125 for papers, but screw papers. He is an awsome dog and took to shed hunting very well. I have never been fond of the paper thing and all the other bs, like pedigree and master champ and al the other crap that goes with a dog. The dog is made by his trainer and time, dedication. papers and all the other crap is for the birds!

My two girls should be pretty good at shed hunting. Our local pet store sells deer and elk antlers as dog treats, and they ain't cheap. They get them from a local guy who cleans, cuts and weighs them. They then get sold by weight. The girls go nuts for em'. Time to take the pair for a walk and see if they can find any.

O.K. so we have gone out a couple of times and nothing, Today I took Beamer to work with me in the shop truck, I had a few jobs in the sticks with no one else around,  3 different places actually where I just left the door open and let him run.   When we were headed home this afternoon he started sniffing and pawing at something between the seat and the passenger door, I told him to knock it off cuz it was getting annoying but he wouldn't quit. So I pulled over expecting to dig a piece of food out for him, only to find a 3 point Blacktail shed stuck on the floor between the seat and the door,   :yike:  I was confused as hell for a couple of minutes till I started thinking back. He must of found it in the woods somewhere, probably tried to bring it to me and I didn't pay any attention to him so he took it in the truck to chew on it and dropped it down there.  So the sheds chewed on pretty good but he found his first one.  Weird deal.  :o I probably let him keep it.
