What primers does everyone us. I have been using CCI for my 223 and winchester for the 243 and 7mm mag. But need to buy more and looks like I have to order them since cabelas and sportmans is always out.

Will not order from a place like that when it comes to powder or primer because of the LARGE shipping cost. That is who I got my reloader from great company. I am going to order from Cabelas and have it shipped to them so I have no shipping cost and live 10 minutes away.

I use federal large rifle primers and winchester small rifle primers. I don't think it matters much for me unless I have a firing pin that would have a problem detonating the primer because it was too weak or something. Then I would be on the lookout for the softest primer for example. I know some people swear by specific setups and primers. I am not very experienced reloading but I have confidence that my bullets will fly well enough to do the job :chuckle:
BTW FWIW some of the advice I get reloading on the internet is not very useful. I find that a lot of people spend more time telling you that you are not smart and experienced like they are and that everything you are doing is wrong. Still though there can be specks of good information a lot of times. Like that whole thread with the Barnes TSX bullets about a month and a half ago. Nobody had much advice for me other than a lot of things which had nothing to do with the matter. In the end I resolved it with some minor ingenuity and summed up that those bullets are somewhat finecky. I didn't even ever mention that they like to stick to the top of my brand new die set. Hahah.

Thanks for the info Ray. I just screwed up my 223 depriming die about a hour ago so have to get a new die while I am at it. Going out next weekend to test out what I have done.

Is it the decapping unit on an RCBS die? I have an extra one. They cost about 6 or 8 bucks. I have damaged them when they become oh so slightly loose and I force them too much when I should not be.

I forgot to mention that I have played with different primers when I have a little bit of unburned powder left in my brass as well.

It was a lee decaper/sizer. The whole brass is in it stuck and it pulled the rim of the brass :dunno: It sucks

Guys say they like this primer or that primer. For what reason do you guys use the primer you do.

I use the primers I have because that's what they have most available at the local store. Like I mentioned earlier. I might change that if I had a specific problem with detonation. The rumor on the street is that Federal is softer than CCI. I use large pistol magnum primers (as opposed to non magnum) in my 44 with the Alliant 2400 because it helps burn up the powder better.

I had more misfires with the federal ones.
I haven't had a misfire with the CCI.

I tend to use Federal for rifle and Win for shotgun. Seems like the match grade mag primers from Fed are really consistant. I just started reloading pistol so I haven't developed a preference there.

I use whatever I can get. I've been extremely lucky with never having a missfire from one of my reloads. I do take care to keep my hands as clean as possible.

I don't typically have a preference however my Model 70 in 270win has a slightly weak firing pin spring so I use either Federal or Remington because they're softer. The only piece of advice I would give is don't mix brands, all primer brands are not the same, if you want consistent loads you need to keep everything the same.

Thanks for the info n mixing primers. Never thought about different primers firing the powder a little different. I am having problems even finding large rifle primers. Sportsman and Cabelas are always out. I am not paying the extra $20.00 shipping charge to have them shipped.

I have about 800 federal large rifle primers. I am not going to send them in the mail but I would be happy to give you about 500 if you want them. You'll have to come get them up here though.

I could run up there next weekend. I will check a local shop this week also not sure if they have reload stuff.

Ray I was just thinking my truck gets 17mpg so to come up there and back would cost me like $26.00. Are you going to come down for the meet at the end of the month?

Bobcat or Snowman will most likely go. I doubt I can make that. I'll see if I can pass the baton to one of them.
