Title: Coyote in a cage trap!
Post by: Rufus on March 13, 2011, 06:39:05 PM
First coyote I have ever caught in a cage trap. 35lbs male. I had to drive all the way home to get my camera so I could take some pics because I couldn't believe it myself!

Of course I have my trapping license! I trap bobcats but have caught everything from badgers to skunks. I just sold this coyote for $26 at the fur sale.

someone asked , why trap? i will answer, there is nothn like sneakn up on your trap line and hearing the soft sound of the chain rattle or hearing them bumpn around inside the live trap or noticing the slide wire slid down the line or following grapple tracks until you find it hung up and seeing the fruits of your labor, and then the real work starts ...... putn up fur!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why trap?  Really  :dunno:- That's like asking why hunt, or why fish?  better just take pictures of everything from here on out, but not with a trailcam, cause that would not be intense enough :bash: :bash:

lol I really like how this thread turned on me... keep going it makes me laugh and it just goes to show how some people really are... I'm not at all against trapping I just PERSONALLY dont see the excitment in it. I have never been into it and never experienced it. Me, I would probably get much more of a thrill out of calling in a coyote that thinks he's the big man and killing him at 50 yrds out.  And about the price of the fur I just talked to a guy that sells them overseas.  He has been in the business for over 40 years.  Some people just like to take things out of context and judge others.

So lets see what was taken out of context:

wtf are you going to do with it?  :dunno: were u planning on trapping coyotes? hope u have your trappers license...

and then there was this:

my  :twocents:  why trap?  why not try to call them in a take a shot? its much more intense! with trapping its set the trap and wait... and wait... and wait...

So you get on the trapping board and dis a trapper and trapping in general - and now your wondering why there is an issue?  Not hard to do that math. :dunno:

well why comment on what you haven't experienced..Calling in dogs are a blast, killed many in my yrs, even at point blank range...But try to get an animal to put its foot in a 5 inch diameter area,or get them in a cage..pretty cool. Then work the hide, and prep it for sale. There is a huge satisfaction in it...Wanna be a better hunter??? Learn how to trap.opens ones eyes to a whole different world...

So I was in the middle of showing you how the thread turned, but now that I see that someone else explained it to you.

I agree with the others. Cage trapping a coyote is much tougher than calling one in, and though it may be a fluke, he did it and wanted to share. Then you chose to bash it.

I agree 100%. If you want to be a better hunter learn how to trap. you learn not only when an animal does something, but also why and how. It's almost like you become part animal and are way more intune.

My dad tells me stories all the time about when he used to trap as a kid. If it were legal, I'd have dozens of snares and leg traps out trying to bag some critters. Sounds like a blast to me. The anticipation of checking the traps must be a total adrenaline rush.

Better save those pics rufus, as there's a good chance that'll never happen to you again.  35 lbs is a giant too!  The one my bud caught in his live trap was a small pup, and still that was very rare.

That's one big yote! Almost looks part domesticated. They are hard enough to catch using a leg hold never mind a cage trap..Good job consider yourself very lucky.
I sure miss the days growing up trapping coyotes and muskrat using the old leg hold traps. It was the funnest hobby I can remember. It kept me out of trouble and taught me alot about nature.. I always wanted to teach my kid trapping skills. Using cage traps although a challenge doesn't even come close to being the same as the old Victor leg holds.Cryin shame those days are gone for good and will never come back.

Now I'm wondering what he is thinking when you walked up to him with the camera and such!  :chuckle:

Yeah, yeah buddy, you got me, ha ha. Now open this thing and let me out! Hey, why is that guy pointing that little box at me? Wow - that was bright, little grey spots everywhere! And what's he doing with that black metal stick? Why is pointing that at me now too? Is it going to flash too? Yep, not as bright but it sure was lou......  :chuckle:

Ok - that was dumb....

One of the reasons I like to trap (especially I-713) is many days I would have over fifty animals in one day.I have known only a few that can bag a handful a day calling. Now days I'm pretty much a coon/possum trapper which I figure at least save a few ducks.

Good job!   Was able to trap for 3 seasons before it was voted out, so it was a short learning curve for me.  But I have to agree, the 2 coyotes I caught just looked plain embarrased...the 2 bobcats I caught though sure were upset and not shy about letting me know!!

Have often thought about getting back out with some cage traps, seeing your coyote catch sure dosen't help.

Again, awesome pictures, thanks for sharing!
