I hope to get another trip before the month is out, but I was wondering: When is it usually considered a little late in the season? I noticed the contest ends 2/28. I'm assuming the decreasing cold weather and educated dogs are factors. Thanks.

Its a matter of hides going south. Usually they are getting pretty shaggy by now. This spring might be a bit of an exception, I saw a pretty good hide today. The one I busted last week was looking kinda worn and ragged. Fed the crows.

You'll note that different folks hunt them for different reasons. Some only kill them when they can harvest the hides...others shoot them year around.

I always preach that after 4/1 you need to bring a shovel and shotgun in case you shoot a wet bitch. Otherwise you may have a den of starving pups that will die horribly. Cut open the fellopian tubes, count the nubs to determine litter size, then backtrack to locate the den.

i hate to kill the litter in a den...I usually hunt from August-Early March.
-
I also don't hunt them much after March. Gotta leave 'em alone to litter up for next season. ;)

I'm a pelt hunter so for me the end of Feb is pretty much it. I don't start till Nov.

I too stop in March. We start and end the contest on those dates to encourage hunting when the fur is best, and allow them time to mate and rear pups. My previous comment is for those who want to shoot them year round. Just remember when you shoot a nursing or pregnant female, you are losing about another 6 young of the year to hunt the following winter. Those younger coyotes are easier to call as well.

Its calving season, and the crows and maggies are hungry.
