Title: ELK HUNTING TIPS
Post by: rtspring on March 18, 2011, 10:09:04 AM
Thought I would post up a new TOPIC to go along with the turkey hunting tips.

1. If you run into other hunters while elk hunting, turn around and go another way. Elk do not like humans.
2. The wind is the breaker in elk hunting, keep the wind in your face or you are done.
3. If there is a chance that the stalk will go wrong, Don't even attepmt it, find a way to close the distance without spooking the animals, otherwise they will be gone and won't come back most of the time.
4. SCOUT SCOUT SCOUT. it pays dividends in the end....

lets hear what everyone else thinks........

Be still
Pay attention. < stop day dreaming >
Don't stink
Get in shape
Shoot straight
Scout everyminute you can

Hunt where they want to be not where they've BEEN!

If you think you have gotten far enough into the thick nasty stuff, go a little farther and that is where they will be.  ;)

Yes someone did, and they were being 100% straightforward and honest with you. Hunt the west side, lots more elk, prettier country, nicer people, no helicopters.  ;)

Ive learned a few tricks.

As you walk stop and listen for a few min if you think there around they will give them self away because they are loud when they feed or move around and arnt spoked.

wind matters more then not smelling, I spilled coffee on me before I walk in last year and had my elk walk 30 yds from me and never knew I was there.

If you see people go tell you dont any more.

One thing I disagree with is going away when you see another hunter.

The alternative I use, is to communicate with them. There is plenty of areas to hunt. If you see some one in an area you plan on hunting and have no other area close by, then move on, but if you have a spot farther past the area he is in, then communicate your intentions, you may be able to help each other out, but don't hunt to close, or over anyone  :bdid:

Having a 20 year old is good advice but I lost mine to the armed forces  :'(

Wind is more important then not smelling, but keep as scent free as possible, you will never be 100% scent free.

Always have a pack of some sort with the 10 essetials in it for emergencies.

Don't worry about being quiet, be carefull not to make "human" noises. Elk don;t walk on there tipie toes throught the woods, they make lots of noise, but if they hear a noise that elk will not make, they will be alert.

Cover scents on boots and legs can help to cover human odors.

When hunting in bear counrty, always have a hunting party that runs slower then you.

look at topo maps,in high hunter areas you can find escape areas, and places most wont trek...it takes a very small area to hold a bull later in the season

Learn the area you plan on hunting and know it well. Even if you spend a few years learning a unit it will pay off.

hunt hard , wind in your face always , hunt from the top down , if you don't attempt a stalk you'll never have a chance , don't hesitate if a shot presents itself, hunt till dark then start hiking out , oh yeah don't call bulls inless you have a bull tag !!!!!!!!!!!

Bugle with a coyote howler. Im telling you, it works like a charm.

Watch the wind and enjoy the fact you're hunting elk.

Cow call every hundred yards or so once you get to where you want to be...dont know how many elk I would have walked right on by if I hadnt done this.

Hunt hard all day...... Put 10 miles or more.... Keep the wind in your favor..... Move very slow.... Keep your eyes peeled... Elk can be very sneaky just as they can be loud.... Almost go insane when three guys come riding up to you on quads in a non-motorized area when you were lining up a nice spike at 30 yds in the brush just waiting for the lungs to get clear...... Jump a 330 class 6 point on the way back because you're to pissed and not doing all the above, while Dad is 1/4 mile away with a bull tag..... Get back to camp late and then you have to listen to these guy's who've been back at camp since 9 am drinking. Didn't know the area at all... Never even been there in fact.... Had 5 head of elk come into camp.... One fills his cow tag and the other two both knocked down the spike.... That's how you elk hunt!!!

So far here is a laundry list of advice I have received.

Spend time getting off the road and way back....find a clearcut and sit.
Be really really quiet...make some noise elk are loud.
No elk in the Blues, No elk in the colockum, invisible elk on the wetside  :dunno:
oh and then use a 7mag...no wait not big enough use a 300wm....oh but that is not right 338 should do the trick anything else is too small.....only archers are true hunters....
honestly you will find most of the elk holed up in town during elk season  :dunno:
  just sayin  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I'm telling you all.... Last season was crazy.... Finally filled my spike tag 5 days later out of crazy luck.... Filled my deer tag 2nd to last day of late ml after 29 days of hunting....  Early and late combined.... Will have a little write up and pics when I learn how to use my new scanner.... Broke my digital on the hunt...  Lucky I had a disposable..

when it comes to north and south facing slopes why are these more productive or why do you concentrate more on them? is that open slopes or deep timber too? just wondering because ive seen a lot of people talk about that.

Zacmioli, elk do like north facing slopes, and east facing, as they are generally cooler and have more cover to hide in, and are a good place to look during warm dry weather. But elk can be found on any slope or flat, that is conducive to their needs.

Don't be afraid to move on 'em. If they're going away, run around 'em and head 'em off. If there's a draw or a drainage in front of 'em, get there first.
