Well I will be brief tonight. I shot a dandy tonight. I think it might have been another bear that Bearhunter saw about a week ago. It has a nice coat, nice brown nose, and a big white splash across its chest. No pictures until I got home though. I was by myself just before dark in the rain with no camera so no pictures until I got home. Roughly 6'2" and heavy. He dropped like a rock and I went into the brush after 30 minutes only to find he got up and was no where to be seen. Long story short he got another shot in the brush at 10 feet as he was coming at me. Got the old heart pumping and knees knocking. I will try to post the crappy pics tomorrow.

Im glad you got to kill that bear, the short look I got at him he sure was a big pretty bear. I hope you end up going with the full body mount like we were talking, guys this bear will definetly go 300 + Shannon said it still had a couple inches of fat on it when he skinned it, it was the second biggest one I seen up there. The big boy is still there, wish I could use my second tag, I no where Id be! Looks like Im out of the running for the predator contest. Congrats again Shannon well have to go get a couple more this August! Lets see those crappy pictures.

OK guys. I am half computer illiterate so lets see if I can post a pic. First off, I have to apologize in advance for the pictures. I am almost embarrassed to put this one up compared to some of the great photo's on here. Not a good way to show off or do justice to a good animal but its all I have. Pictures are not high on my list of priorities when I get an animal down and its always a regret later. This is the only pic that turned out at all on my camera. They really suck. Anyways, I am not overly big but not small either. I am 6'1" 220lbs just to put the pic in prospective. I started to rug out the hind quarters with a mini mag on the hill and decided to finish at home with good light so his lower half is skinned in the picture. I do have some cell phone pictures that are kind of blurry but better I just have to figure how to get that on my computer. I took the rug to my taxidermy and was hoping to talk to him but he was having a surgery done. The lady that checked it in said it was a nice average 150 lb bear. I was pretty disappointed thinking I was becoming a *censored* in my old age. I took my meat to the butcher boned out completely with no fat, hide, or anything just meat. I lost most of one front shoulder with my last shot from 10' and cut that out so that was not part of what I took to the butcher. I had a total of 147 lbs of boned out meat. I was hoping someone on here with better bear knowledge then me can give me a decent guess to live weight. Also, the blaze on his chest is about 10" across and 8" long it just does not look like it in the picture.

Looks like an illegal hold there, no points unless you take him all the way down and pin him!!!
Nice bear, congrats!!!!
-
Nice bear...I'd be proud to take that bear!
-
How wide is his front pad?
-
That is a great lookin bear....might as well get the full body mount....That white chest is awesome and cant wait to see some better pictures of it....You guys suck being about to kill all these bears...I cant believe how much fun i had this year out chasing bears...Definately gotta do it again.
-
I did not measure his pads. They were wider than my hands though. That doesn't tell you a whole lot though.
-
great bear! :mgun2:
-
nice job i'm envoice of guys.
-
Not sure on the weight , I would guess around 300 live. BTKR would know, whats the live weight Billy?
That bear would make a nice lifesize!! Dandy bear!!!!

Too bad about not getting enough pics. I would suggest picking up one of the smaller Canon digitals for your pack.
Here is how I would estimate your bears weight based on some of mine. Some numbers are rounded for easier math.
You said aprox 150# boned out meat.
If the hide was fleshed half decent with skull in I would give 75#.
Bones would get at least 50#.
For a total of 275# plus about 25# for guts makes it aprox 300# live weight.
Though it could go about 25# either way, I would say this is a fair estimate based on the photo.
:twocents:
Either way it is a nice bear. Congrats again and thanks for sharing.

Too funny. We posted at the same time and it booted me.
-
Great minds think alike!! ;)
-
Most animals will maintain about 35-38% of their body weight as pure meat. That would put yuor bear near 400lbs, live weight. With your stating you had 147lbs of boneless meat. Damn Nice bear.
-
A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! nice work
-
Nice bear :yike:
-
Thats a pig fo shizze
-
Nice bear, great job.
-
Pretty cool especially with the white splash!
-
Nice job Shannon. 1st time I chked the puter today. Been butchering half-frozen pieces of mine into roasts or 5 # sausage packages. Still not done. I'd never make it as a meat cutter-but what's an old retired dude gonna do w/his time anyway? Go hunting-the one good thing about getting old is hunting M-F & skipping the weekends. Well good thing we got lucky this year. If they open this unit for a Spring hunt next year I think there will be a little more competition. Wonder what gas will cost by then? I'm new to WA, do they provide any 4X4 carpool vans? Hummmm. Oh well, after a 6 year dry spell I can't get too greedy (or can I?). Wasn't it 3 yrs for you? What about you Bearhunter, Hogsniper?
Pictures & more of a story please!
-
I wish I was retired to but at 34 instead of 60+. With gas prices going at this rate I might never. Here are my phone pictures. Not much better though.

And another

Shannon those pics turned out better than you let on, certainly is a good bear, cant wait to see the mount. Oh ya it would probably be less than 6month turnaround on the bear, Im probably going to send mine up also. Glad you fiqured out how to send the cell phone pics.
-
Sideswipe I had 3 points, been putting in for the blues. Wish I was retired also only anther 25 years to go.
-
That is awesome...Of course you couldnt get it when i packed the video camera and tripod all the way into that hell hole...haha That is a great bear!!!! Justin
-
James you need to work a schedule kinda like mine...It works pretty good also!!
-
Shannon, what did you decide??? Is it gonna be a life size or just a half mount??
-
Well my taxidermy wanted $4,800 for a life size. After I got back up off the floor I decided for a half mount. I found out today I could get it done for much less so I am up in the air. I may be to late since they already prepped it for the half mount. It would have been cool to get the shot on James' video camera. I knew I was going to get something that day because I got 10 miles from my house and realized I forgot my camera and decided to keep on going. Oh well! I will have the mount to remember the day. I have a big chocolate bear lined up on the east side I hope to get this fall. I will have my camera on that one.
-
Gosh only 25-31 hunting seasons before retirement..I would gladly trade my pension for your age (but you gotta throw in your bear hunting experience). Actually, I'm happy to be able to get into the woods & pop an occasional bear or deer & then come home & get on this crazy forum. Raising kids & making a living-retirement will come soon enough-enjoy each year now. I'm glad my grandsons (1 & 4) have a dad who takes them fishing & is a hunter.
Now if I could only get this puter to put my avatar picture on the forum...doggone it!!!
-
sideswipe...email me your pic and i can make it your avatar...actually, i'll do it, but it won't be till next week.
headed to the blues for the weekend.
