Title: Turkey Hunting/Gas Prices
Post by: birdmanwa on March 23, 2011, 08:17:27 PM
Quick  question, What is gas prices going to do your spring turkey hunting? Are you going to make the trek to the NE or shortstop somewhere in Central WA? I'm glad I don't have to travel far to be in turkey country.

With the opener on a Friday this year .... I think we will see plenty of folks in the turkey woods throughout the state!   :twocents:

I have the opener off......BUT w/the gas prices I don't know. I'm from Chewelah and plan on going over, so it's a vacation to see family and friends too. :dunno: I just got a lead on some turkeys over here on the wet side. If I can get in on them over here, I will save my gas money for deer season.

Oh yes it is definatly going to affect all of my hunting this year especially Turkey birds. We plan on hunting central washington instead of the NE corner this year and with the amount of snow still in the hills its kind of screwing me. Thanks to the idiots that set the prices for fuel!

I don't go to far about 15-20 miles for my turkey hunting. I think it will keep a few more people out of the woods.

Well was going to take the week off for some time to my self, but now I will miss the 1st 15 days because of work. Never have missed an opener in 16 years but I can't turn down the hours and the OT. I agree with sundance the gas prices wont slow me down for scouting and now late season. Good luck every one.

I have two kids a fired up to go :IBCOOL: so fuel will play a role but not enough to keep us home. I considered not going to the regular season but I will be sure to get my kids over no matter what the bill. They are excited and I do not know how long it will last, with all the activities they have today I want to keep hunting near the top of the list. :twocents:

What, no Turkey Slayer in the woods during opening week???  :yike:   Unheard of!!   Does this mean that Yelp will also hold off hunting for this year's trophy bird (contest) until you can make it out?

Gas prices will not stop the youth season!  The gobbler must be stalked.   :boxin:  Motels, junk food, scouting, many miles, game on.

Spring turkey only happens once a year.
Those of us who purchased 2 or more turkey tags months ago, aren't going to let a little thing like gas prices stop us.
If turkey hunting is your passion, then gas prices won't stop you.
If your nom de guerre on this site has something to do with turkeys, then nothing is going to stop you.

If you have not yet purchased your turkey tag or turkey hunting is not high on your list, then gas prices are a factor.
If you think gas prices are too high, why don't you hitch-hike?

Remember watching those NFL commercials about fans that have been to all the super bowls? Son's/daughter's wedding, birth of grandchild were not sufficient reasons for not going.

Phantom,

Nope yelp can start opener because he is going to need the 15 teen day head start :chuckle:. Phantom this should help you out all so. The best thing about it is that I start 12 hour night shift 7 days a week. So I mite be able to hunt in the morning just stay local.

Slayer,

No worries, I just hunt Jakes the first part of the season anyways to warm up to the task!!   :chuckle:   My "calling" is a little rusty the first few weeks as you know!

Hopefully my luck will change once the season gets started.  Sure didn't have any luck tonight at the Lake Washington NWTF Dinner/Auction in Bellevue.   :bash:

Phantom, who won the raffle?
Title: Re: Turkey Hunting/Gas Prices

If I was that worried about the money, I would just hunt the Safeway brand turkey. That said ...
 :chuckle:

This year I will probably only go eastside for a couple days  so I won't be taking the RV for sure ... gas costs double and then you pay hookup fees not counting trailer preps and hookup at home, disconnect at the park, reconnect coming home, disconnect at home and re-cleaning the RV ... if a hunting buddy goes and splits cost, then 4 days or more we take the RV ... if I go alone and its not for a week or more, then I'm heading to the motel. On the wetside, I will probably only make day trips on Sundays only due to working 6 days/wk & 10 hr/day.

But somethings just aren't about the money ....  :twocents:

Just found out i was drawn for spring bear in Monroe unit.  I have not yet shot a bear so i will concentrate on my bear.  I might make a trip later in the season when the crowds die down but i wont be going to colvile like usual.  Especially since i will be going to wyoming Antelope hunting.  I need to save my money for gas.

That's some of the best turkey hunting, its year round. Typically almost a 100% success rate, and there is no limit. Sounds like paradise to me.

I think gas prices will limit trips for people, but not stop people from going. It will just make the turkey a little more expensive.

Gas prices just became irrelevant.  The Bill for my MRI just came.  It equals 18 tanks of gas for me  :'(...maybe I can pretend it got lost till after the season

Don't want to jack this thread, but there was a good turn out at the Lake WA NWTF Auction last night in Bellevue.  One gent won a shotgun in a raffle, then pulled the next ticket and picked his own to win a rifle!!!

Turkey hunting has no price in my book.  If I worried about the cost I would have quit years ago.  The turkeys I shoot cost me about $30.00/lb!   :chuckle:

It's 220 miles from my home to the place in the Klickitat where I hunt. I will be towing a 6000lb 28ft travel trailer. Figuring gas at $4.00 a gallon, it will cost about $215.00, I can swing that. I will spend a week hunting with a close and dear friend; that in itself is well worth  the cost. I will be 61 next month, and every year there is one less turkey season for me. If gas hits $5.00 a gallon I will still go spring turkey hunting! (But that is just me.)
