Title: WEEKLY SALMON REPORTS 2008
Post by: Dman on May 22, 2008, 02:55:27 PM
Just a thought for a good continuous thread, throw up your reports for river's, saltchuck, wherever your catching your nooks and slab coho's. Throw something up even if your not successful, let other's know what's going on out there. I haven't been out yet, but I'm picking up the boat next week after overhaul, ready to go.

Hit MA 13 yesterday for crab an salmon. Salmon was slow didn't see anything caught, though there are a ton of baitfish in the area. Crabbing was just OK, weather was  8).

I have been fishing MA 13 and doing pretty well.  Last wed. was good with 10#, 15# and 22#, the next day nothing. Have not been out since but soon.

Good day for June. Usually it doesn't pick up for a couple weeks. With all that bait around the fish have to be there sooner or later.

They are there if you are in the right place. If there is bait there will be fish. We have been catching fish all month, along with a few seals as well. The first salmon I had on for the year I lost to a seal.

My issue is keeping an eye on my pots. I usually only end up fishing an hour or two each time out because I "lose" my pots every time they are out of sight any length of time. I plan to get out during peak season and leave the pots at home.

Post by: DeKuma on June 29, 2008, 11:57:05 AM
By "lose" you mean some Ash Wipe steals them?

That is why I never get out of sight of them anymore.  Even though I can find there place with the GPS, they are not there because someone thought it would be cool to steal them :bash:

Hit the lower columbia friday and saturday.  We went 3-5.  Plunking from an island with spin-n-glows.

Exactly DeKuma, I watched yesterday while one boat kept trying to sneak in around us and check our pots for nearly two hours. He was doing nothing but drinking with his buds, not fishing, crabbing, anything. He finally left after it was apparent I wasn't going to let them out of sight. Absolutely everyone I've talked with down there has had problems, it's one I guess the law just doesn't give a *censored* about. In Maine, where we used to Vaca. when I was a kid, you could legally shoot someone for pulling your lobster pot, in the act. Don't know if that's the case now, but it sure was effective.

I lost about $200 in traps in area 10 a few years ago.  I think shooting them is a great idea! >:(

I had 4 pots stolen at Nisqually last year on opening day.  That was the last time that I took off and left the to soak alone!!!  There were several others who had all of their pots stolen that day as well.  My friend at the WDFW said that it was probably one of the Squaxin's or  Nisqually's who are notorious for that kind of crap.

I hate coming back to check our pots and be missing some.  We've had decent luck with keeping our pots at hood canal, but a couple have managed to disappear.  We leave em out all night though so we are taking a chance.

Have seen a few silvers on the surface and I am going to give it a shot tonight.

Saw a bunch of boats on the Columbia today!  Anybody hear how the salmon have been?  Thinking of heading out tomorrow and trying some buzzbombs from the shore or maybe use some eggs with a bobber...  All from the shore.

Columbia is closed for salmon.  You can catch steelhead.  Try plunking spin-n-glows with shrimp tails.

Hit area 11 real hard yesterday. Pretty slow from the previous Sunday which I heard was killer.  Fished out front of Gig Harbor and then headed to the clay banks for the tide change. Kind of a funky tide, out of about 40 boats, we only witnessed one fish about ten pounds a guy caught mooching. No luck for us, not even a takedown. Still kinda early I think.

Columbia is open on the east side from Rock Island up to Chief Joe. Was out on the 1st and put 3 in the boat. Try at Wells where the fish ladder dumps in if your fishin off the beach.

Went out and fished by Wenatchee Yesterday morning for about 5 hours... Didn't see a fish caught, talked to a few guys and it seems a lot of the fish are still down south and they're lookin for it to pick up in a week or two...

And since when could you not use a treble hook with a buzz bomb???  I guess to many complaints about guys snagging fish and not turning 'em loose or something...

Come on man, just a little more deets? Some pics maybe?

I will be staying at Beebe Bridge the 17th -21st. We went up and checked out the Wells area by boat last year and there were about 50 lined up on shore and 20 or so boats trolling around. Saw some nice fish caught but have no clue how to fish for them up there. Anyone on here know how to fish from a boat up there? Some looked to be using divers, some downriggers but not sure on the bait, flasher, dodger etc. Any help would be appreciated, I would like to give it a try since everyone in camp will be sleeping in over there anyway. I can get a couple good hours of fishing in before the hang-overs kick in. :chuckle:

Fished Mid Channel out of Pt. Townsend area 9 and got a 20 clipped yesterday and an 8 today. lost 2 other good ones. There were quite a few nets flying both days. Get them before they close it. I won't make it there again before the quota is filled. Sekiu is hit and miss. The Halibut fishing was great this year.  :EAT:

Anybody do any good outside Possession this weekend?

I spent about 4 hrs. out there on the opener last Wednesday and most of the day and evening on Thursday and came out with one fish.  Nothing like it was last year.  Sh.t ton of boats out there, very few fish being caught.

There's a 7000 fish quota in 9, I'm not sure if they include 10 in that also so next weekend would be iffy. It might stay open you just have to watch for any announcements.

Glad to hear some of you are having success.  MA10 has been really slow.  I've been out 7 times and have not even had a bite!  Anyway, I don't think we will reach the quota nearly as soon as last year.  Look at the fish check numbers from this past weekend and compare them to last year at about the same time.  It's going to take awhile to fill the quota at this pace.

Same as the Purple Haze just in green, they are the hot ticket in Canada. The tackle shops cant keep the purple in stock. Hotspot makes some great color combos and those UV flashers look like lights in the water.

I used to get custom made flashers from a place in Victoria that closed last year, they worked really well, red army truck. Now I make them myself. Spot on, UV PH is a killer too.

It looks like less than 1500 kings have been taken in MA 9 and 10 so far. With a 7000 combined quota there still is time.

Landed a nice fat  24-25 pounder in the net today in area 11. Unfortunately it was considered "wild" by the fish and game and I had to let it go. Had one other on for a few, but lost it. They make it hard fishing barbless singles with a jig. Only fished the tide change too, but heard the early morning guys did alright. Other than that, saw a few caught too.

Trolling incoming or outgoing?  Mooching?  Divers?  Back Trolling?  Come on someone has been tearing them up, right?

If your going to the Columbia Buoy #10 area you had better Hurry - the famous F & G have stopped retention after this weekend for Chinooks.   :'(   Just as I get another trip planned next Wednesday and Thursday, (Same with Sturgeon) they terminate the retention...  Man, I catch fish but they can't be scared I'm coming down there are they? :chuckle:  Anyone been out to the sound lately, Pullayuap River mouth, Nisqually Mouth, etc....?????  Now that I ask they probably terminate this also......

Now I am pissed to beat hell!!!!! >:(  I took my boat into a certain shop in downtown Oly over 4 weeks ago to have a simple pump fixed.  I told them that I needed my boat in no more than 3 weeks.  I had planned to fish Buoy 10 today, tomorrow and Sunday as well as a couple of days next week.  I scheduled time off of work  a year ago.  Wouldn't you know that the *censored*s still have my boat torn apart and just forgot about it.  Not only am I going to miss fishing this weekend, but now the whole f-ing season!!!!!  Buoy 10 is one of my favorite and most successful spots to fish, I wait all year for it.  Damn it!!!  Now they are shutting it down early?  I am so pissed that I won't be able to sleep tonight.  I am glad that the kids are asleep.  I am going down to my barn to pummel a sheet of plywood with a hammer.  Sorry for the bitch session.

Hit up the gig harbor shoreline this morning and went 1 for 3 with a nice low teens buck in the box.  Saw one of the lost fish and guesstimate him to be in the mid teens.  Hopefully they don't all leave with the rain.  I'd like one more shot!
