Hello everyone. I'me turkey hunting for the first time this year. I'me trying to get good at using a mouth call. I bought the H.S. Strut combo pack that has a instruction DVD and 3 reeds to get started. Been practicing for a couple weeks and feel like i'me getting the hang of it except for purring. I just cannot seem to make that happen :bash: I was wondering if any of you have found a certain reed call that is easier to purr with.

Nope! I've been calling for about 5 years and have tried a ton of different calls and still don't have the purring down.. The only way I can do it is with my lips.. Can't get the actual sound from the call. I've got the cut, yelp, putt, cluck, etc. etc. down but the purr is tough. Good luck!

i think that once I figured out how to purr I could do it reasonably with any call. I've got a bunch of them and can do it with any of them...it was the figuring out how to do it that got me.
With that said, I like the Woodhaven Custom Calls the best for diaphrams. I'm far from a pro, there's a bunch of guys on here that can tell you a lot better than me.

I agree that any call can be used to make good purrs, and at times I find purring very useful. Also agree the biggest problem is that people overcall (too loud and too often), especially while the bird is still on the roost. If you give a few soft yelps and he answers you, he just recognized you as a hen so shutup until you know he's on the ground ... or he'll wait for you to come to him (as it happens in nature) before he flies down. If you don't show up he figures somethings wrong with this picture and will most likely go the opposite direction. I will usually will feel him out, yet let him gooble at least 3 times to my 1. Otherwise he will think you want him as much as you want him, and he will expect you to come to him (again the nature thing). Reverse this - let his natural sex drive and curiosity work against him.
As far as purring, not everyone can do a throat purr. I usually tell people to make like you're clearing a hairball or rolling "R's" from your throat. If you can't do that, buzzing your lips can work well. Remember it is a soft call that he can hear from hundres of yards ... do it softly as possible and throw in a cluck or to before or after.

Itcan be done with many diaphraghm calls..I use raspy. I however prefer a slate for purring.
