In case you have not heard Montana draw tags for elk are at 100% with about 1200 tags left over. The additional tags will be sold first come, first served beginning April 18th through Montana FWP website. Congrats for those who put in!! Additionally, we still have some openings for both rifle and archery if folks are interested:)
-
any word on deer tags :dunno:
-
whats the word on price??
-
something like 643 for deer and 912 for deer elk combo.
-
Are there going to be over the counter deer tags???
-
This may sound like a stupid question, but if they have 1200 tags left over then that means that everyone that put in for a tag got drawn right :dunno:
-
Yes, everybody who put in for the elk combo or elk/deer combo gots a tag, deer combo is subject to draw with 7800 applicants and 4600 tags.
-
When's the date of the draw?
-
Hope I am drawn for a deer tag!
-
Do you know how many deer elk combo tags they have left?
-
I think about 1200
-
Twobear, where did you get your info from? I would love to think that i got drawn for the combo, but wont believe it until I get the tags in the mail. Although I thought going in this year that it was almost a sure thing for people putting for the big game combo.
-
Alot of people like my buddy and I didn't put in this year for the elk/deer combo partially due to the increase in price. Obviously others did not as well.

Press release from Montana FWP. 15,800 applicants for 17000 tags. It's a done deal, just face it, your going elk hunting in Montana this fall:) Congrats!!
-
So with the 1200 left I take it that is the gross number and there are some areas that are maxed out and others with plenty of tags? Do they know those details yet?
Anyone know if there is a cow hunt around Thanksgiving north and west of I-90 (would be willing to dip a bit south of 90 as well)? Hadn't really considered MT before and will be in ID for Turkey Day. I will check the regs later, but wanted to see if I could tap someone knowledge first!
-
west of I-90?
:dunno:
-
912 dollars... pretty expensive for me this year. Next year it will be applying
-
west of I-90?
:dunno:
Ha, that should read western most side of the state, north of I-90.
-
Sweet! looks like I can put in for my Vacation time tonight at work!
-
interesting....may look into this.
-
If the prices didn't jump so high this year I would've put in an application, but after I read the regs and saw the prices it was way out of my budget so i went with Idaho instead; Would love to hunt Montana one day though.

I saw it on the tv news

Its a true story, looks like our tag increases knocked the applications back....
There will be very few cow seasons on the west side of the state this year... but there are some over there, you need to get on line for fwp and go through the hunt planner and look... I'll scan the regs when i get time for ya...
This drawing and the leftover tags can be used in ANY general area in the state. The applications for "specific areas" like the breaks or wherever wont be due till May 1st I believe... at that point, you can put in for areas with limited tags.
Just so you guys know, those 1200 tags will sell out VERY fast as the outfitters have alerted all potential clients that did not draw this year.... I'd bet they are sold out the first day....
Good Luck guys, hopefully you can get a whack at an elk in Montana with me this year!
-
Hornseeker does that mean you will "guide" me if I buy a tag.

Article about it

We didn't apply this year, partly because of the price increase and partly because of the wolf increase in the area we like to hunt. Niether being the entire reason but the two combined with other things this year made it an easy decesion. Will be back next year though. Good luck to those that are going.

I thought the outfitter tags were gone. So didn't everybody that put in for a combo get drawn if there are leftovers or do you mean people that put in for drawings in other states that did not get drawn for them can now go to MT if they buy one of the leftovers.
-
Yeah, the leftovers can be bought by anyone... So, the outfitters are telling the clients that didn't even put in this year because they weren't in a guaranteed draw... and those guys will be happy to shell out the dollars and come up to MT....
-
I'm glad my chances went from 60% to 100%. The pard and I will be over there every year...
