Title: Thule Car topper
Post by: vandeman17 on April 04, 2011, 10:02:58 AM
I recently inheirited a nice Thule car topper and I am trying to decide what I want to do with it. I would like to hang on to it in case I wanted to use it but my garage is already full as is and it takes up space. My question is if any of you guys know where I could look to find out the value of it in case I decide to get rid of it?

Internet.  Many sites will list them by model number and provide pricing.

Ok, I was just thinking that since it is a few years old that it might be tough to find a similar model. I will continue my search and see what I can find.

I have one and think they rock! It works great with my wifes focus because it gets kick ass milage and then when we need more room to go visit people or Vacation it just dropps the milage a little bit. Great for a person with a small car or a Small SUV and big family. :twocents:

That is exactly what I was thinking. I have a truck with no canopy and we also have an Acura SUV that is kinda small so if we wanted to do a roadtrip, we could use the car topper for those. Only problem is if it is worth keeping for the 1-2 times per year we MIGHT use it. It takes up space in the garage and I could always use the $ for another gun.  :chuckle:

We use ours only2-3 times a year, and it is worth it. just think of the fuel and or payments on another rig that gets worse milage. And you really don't need it 90% of the time... I really wanted a Subaru AWD but ended  up with a ford Focus... Why? $500 for bad ass studded snow tires on rims and $500 for the Thule roof rack was about  $10,000 less and still gets better milage by about 5mpg... Pretty sound investment on my part...

I have one and think it's priceless. I keep it in the crawlspace under my house and use it 2-3 times a year. It either goes on the roof of my Grand Cherokee or in the bed of my pickmup truck if I don't have the canopy on it. Rocket box on the roof, dog in the back, kid in the backseat, us in the front, we're good to go for days.

Your best bet for checking selling price would be Craigslist or whatever site you plan to sell it on (Market Value).

They are great for the couple times a year you need one.

We have a larger one that we put on the explorer a few times per year.  I store it suspended from the roof/ceiling of a garden shed - Much like you would suspend it from the ceiling of a garage.  I bought a used canopy for my truck, so we use it less frequently than we used to.  But after having one, I also wouldn't sell it, because I never know when we will needed it next.

Fuel economy goes down by about 1.5 miles per gallon.  So it still does 1 - 3 miles per gallon better than the pickup, when both are loaded up with the dog, children, stuff, and embracing a head wind.
