Ive got a few birds under my belt now but still have some questions. Do you guys use your locator calls all day or just in morning and night. I never really have luck with them midday, but hate when i do a loud yelp or cutt, only to find out there is a bird within 200 yards and never really get a chance to set up. Only get to head over once a year so I dont get to dabble with as many techniques as id like to. If the bird comes in gobblin and struttin, im shootin it. I think this will be the first year i dont shoot any jakes.

I use my truck horn a lot when out roosting birds. Sounds weird but it works the majority of the time if they hear it. They will almost always shock gobble even if they won't answer a turkey call. :twocents:

Yep, use them all day. But becareful some of the locator calls will scare birds, and get them to move off. You are better to use crow calls and such when you feel the bird is a few hundred yards away.

All day! I tried everything I've got one day and nothing responded, then a jet flew over and about 150 yards away from me 3 gobblers let it out! I guess you just never know what's going to make them give up their position. Good luck :tup:

I had a farmer smack his tracker once with a hammer to prove to me they were gobbling mad before I showed and they did and my two boys doubled up.... I put that story in the new Washington record book ...... which everyone should buy ... Look up Northwest biggame animals and get one .. they are awesome this year ... :yeah: :yeah:

the last turkey i called in was at 2:00 pm i was fishing lunch. a truck drove by cracking the ice. and a turky Gobbled. twice he Gobbled to my box call. then i snuck up a grade put out a decoy. thend got up next to a big tree. i called with my Diaphram he Gobbed over the edge did a call then waited here he came Fanned out. got him at 15 yards. that was the third day of season first gobble. i've heard other's do that with rig's going by. here is a sweet custom Lacy Sycamore crow call i turned yesterday for Locating. As Yelp already said........................all day to locate. Many times you just have to be persistent as you won't get a lot of shock gobbles. But all you need is a few to close the deal and set up close. Doesn't matter how long it takes if you have all day.

How do you blow your crow call to get them to respond? I have used one periodicaly at first light and I have never got a reply. One year I tried several times with no answer, a train went by about 1/2 mile away and blew at several crossings, birds gobbled every time. I have actualy given up on trying to get a shock gobble. I primamrly listen for them comming off the roost.

I use a cutting call during the day w/a box or diaphragm. Owl when it's dark.

I don't like useing a owl or crow call......One's I like are the peacock, and elk bugel

I've never been Turkey hunting but I always here guys say slam the car door, honk the horn and so on for a shock gobble. If a car door or a horn works could you shock one with an elk bugle? Sorry kinda off subject.

As already said.... all day and you never know what will work. A couple years ago I couldn't buy a gobble with any of the standard shock calls. I just happened to have an old Circe predator call that my son liked to annoy his mother with, so I decided what the heck......I was in what seemed like the eye of a storm with all the gobbles coming from every direction when i hit the call. I never thought to take a predator/ distress call turkey hunting, but i never go with out one anymore.
