I am all over those smiley faces......I am headed to NEW MEXICO.
This is sort of embarrassing, I put in for so many hunts in so many places that I'm not exactly sure what I got drawn for, and won't know until I get home to check my regs.  I can't even check on-line as they route everything to the draw results.  I assume its archery....I assume its in September, and I assume I'm chasing MONSTER SCREAMIN' bulls.  I only put in for the elite of the elite hunts down there and figured I wouldn't get drawn....compliments to their department for not buying into this bonus point thing.  So far I have drawn first time 3 times if I count my dads permit, in states WITHOUT bonus point systems.  So far ZERO where bonus points are required excluding good ole Washington.

He is my favorite hunting partner.....not sure...I've got some serious politicin' to do.  If you would have heard what my wife said when I called her this morning.  I would post some o f the language, but Huntwa would have to ban me from the site.  I may have to beg him to watch over my birds during that time.  It will depend where its at as well in regards to what kind of camp I might have...backpack etc....and hauling meat out.

I take it ridge you didn't draw anything there.  I'm not sure what I got myself into, but it sure put a smile on my face.  I've seen so many unsuc messages its always a shock when you get drawn.

I'm getting closer to figuring out exactly what I got.  I was at work for 16 hours today and the internet for NM is directed only to the results for the next 5 days.  I've been dieing.  I finally posted on MM and this is what I got

Boneaddict. You are one lucky dog and you don't even know how lucky you are. 16D third hunt. It is short but probably in the best unit in the state at the best time of the year. Congrats though I'm not sure that someone who doesn't remember that hunt deserves it.   :)

I will indeed Michelle.

I found out some more information.  Its September 19-24, so a pretty short hunt.  40 permits and it is in the best unit in the state.  <1% draw odds, so I guess I did still have a little luck left, though it didn't feel like it until now.  It is archery, so I need to get out the sharp sticks and start practicing a little more.  Time to put away the moose grunt and time to pick up the bugle.

so riddle me this because i'v always wondered...do you go down there before hand and scout and figure out a place to hunt or do you just figure out some places to hunt via maps, internet, MM, talking to people, etc and show up and hunt. i really don't want to sound like a dummy here, but i've never hunted out of state or put in for out of state and always wondered how normal joe people have the time/$$$/permission to do this, especially as far away as new mexico. will you drive down there or fly?
forgive the 20 questions, just trying to figure this all out if the opportunity ever arises for me.

I'm going to Colorado for a little elk action this year I figured that I would fly on my free airline miles and rent a 4WD truck for 9 days total cost is about 240.00 bucks. I am not going before hand as that gets real expensive.  Lots of good people out there willing to help out on the web I have been checking around and people are good. Don't know about Tags like the bone's though if the locals resent out of state hunters or what.  My tag  is OTC so people don't care.

Mostly, as I haven't done this alot, I do alot of research in regards to maps.  I have spent a ton of time in the outdoors and know animals fairly well.  I'm not trying to be conceeded at all I promise.  I try to find the areas I am going to target.  I try to get there about 3 days in advance as to get a camp, check out access, confirm what I have seen on maps.  It always looks different I promise.  I then take any advice I have summed up.  I honestly don't get much because I hate asking.  I actually asked on MM this time.  I tend to help people much more than I am helped just because I HATE asking.  When I went to Alaksa, I had the help of a friend I met on MM.  I helped him with some deer knowledge and he helped me a bit with moose.  He got me headed in the right direction, and the rest just fell into place.  If you are not a well versed individual in the outdoors, or have the species "mastered", I would suggest an outfitter.  I have never used one as I never could afford it BUT....its a waste of time and money and luck if you are not prepared.  Moose or elk I am very confident in, so hoping to compensate for the fact I have no clue where I am going. I've never been much into scouting too much beforehand other than learning an area for the mere fact that it often pushes the animals out, or some *censored* screws it up and ruins everything.  Case in point, I had 15 bulls located for my Dad on Washingtons opener.  Two *censored*es decided to scout the area after I watched it from afar, and pushed all of the elk elswhere.  They then showed up an hour before light and tried to footrace us to the spot, blowing through some other animals.  Needless to say all the plans were altered.  This is the first year that I really went gung hoe on applying everywhere for every species.  It pretty much matched your cartoon.  I call alot of elk and have them pert near pissing on me, so if I can find them  and the weather cooperates in those 5 days, I should be able to get one close enough to anchor.  Now I just need to get my fat ass out there running and in shape, and start shooting those sharp sticks.

you gonna do it with your sapphire bow?
Title: Re: WWOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Post by: boneaddict on June 22, 2007, 09:40:18 AM
I think so.  I'm going to try practicing with both, and will take both, one as a back-up, but I would really like to do it with the sapphire.  I think I'll stick with the magnus broadheads that I used with my moose, instead of switching to my homemade arrows this summer or flintknapped ones.  By the way, thanks for that link.  I haven't been able to check it out, but looks like it could be cool.  Next step is to start buying maps.  Dude, you should see my map collection.  I've got a friend (Fletch) that had his all over his office wall when I went to visit him, and he stared at them every day probably.   With all of todays technology and google earth and terra server, they are a godsend.  If it weren't for them, the Alaskan hunt would have been much harder.  Compliments to my Dad on that for helping me put that together.  This unit is very rugged, so I will try to backpack in somewhere to get away from some of the hunting pressure from the previous two weeks.  Hopefully my rig will be safe.  I will have a 50 pound bag of salt in back in a sealed bucket for the cape when I get out.

I'd go a couple of days early and scout, if I drew down there I was going to fly and rent a truck but perhaps driving might be better for you.

I don't like the idea of not having all of my own gear with me, or checking my bow and stuff.  Also the logistics of getting your meat and cape and antlers back.  Your biggest risk is you r vehicle breaking down and sinking your hunt.  Then again, your bags go to china and you end up in NM, that would be bad too.

Boneaddict and everyone

hello to all, I am new to this site and like many of you, was directed this way by fellow WA hunting members over at MM.  I have spoken with many of you (via thread reply) over there and I look forward to discussions that will take place here, without having to wade through the knee deep threads about Utah. (even though I wouldn't mind a Utah LE tag someday)

Boneaddict,

Judging from one of your earlier posts on this thread, I see that I am not the only one who has politicin' to do when hunting season comes around.

Congrats on the NM tag, I am sure you will have a blast

As far as hunting out of state goes...I get the maps and start contacting people...I'm like Bone and dont like to ask but eventually you find a couple of people or biologists to give you a little...having the maps handy when you call you can circle the areas they chat about...after talking to several people about a particular area you see areas of overlap in your circles...this is where I look when I go early.  Has worked for me in Montana in two different parts of the state and a trip to Az. Doing homework is essential and why Im a popular guy to travel with...I dont like to go without a good chance of a good hunt.
I will go early but like Bone only a day or two...for this hunt I would go three...Im not as confident when it comes to elk...haha  best of luck

You know your dieing to come with me to help pack, and to whipe bull slobber off your face when he screams at you.  You're not as good looking as Rose, but I'm pretty sure you can carry more.  She wants to go this time, but all I have to do is mention there are big snakes down there.  :chuckle:

Boneadict,

That 50 lbs of salt ain't going to be enough.  Especially if you are talking about skinning that bull Life Size.  You are going to need atleat 100 lbs.  You can never have to much salt.

If you are going on this hunt by yourself it will be a pain in the rear to get both the meat and a Life Size hide out befor they spoil.   :(

Bone - I had the 16A tag last year.   I think you've got the right approach going 3 days early.   The tail end of the middle hunt will be going on, so you can see where the locals and guides (the majority of the tag holders) concentrate and set up your camp elsewhere.  The bugling should be going full swing by then too.  Depending on the weather, they may not bugle on any given day - but over three days, I would think they'd go nuts at least one day and give away their location.  Seemed that most people were concentrated closer to town, and there were very few people spread throughout the unit.  We had some good info going in and were able to find a place that basically hadn't been touched by other hunters (at least we didn't see any, and the elk didn't seem spooked).  That being said, there's only 150 tags total for 16D over the three hunts, so there really isn't that much pressure at any given time.  Also, your tag is at the peak of the rut, so the bulls really aren't concerned about camoflauged archers sneaking around.  With the limited pressure, I don't see the need to pack in.  This isn't an OTC Colorado hunt.  Personally, I'd rather stay mobile until I found the bugles, then put my energy into the stalk.  We ultimately found a honey hole a couple miles from a road, and just day packed back in there each day.  Also, it was really hot a couple of days down there...I wouldn't want to be too far away from shade and/or a cooler.

Thankyou so much for the info Wacoueshunter.  I figure any 300 inch bull within Trad bow range and they are toast.  I have always wanted to bag a bull in the 300 inch range.  I know there will be much bigger ones running around.  I might change that goal if I see something big before the season starts. Thanks again, Doug

No worries Bone, hope it's helpful even though we drew different units.  Well done on the tag - I am SOOOOO jealous.  Wish I could go back.  If I was made of $$, I'd drop the cash for a landowner tag in a heartbeat.  My archery bull experience is limited, but that hunt blew away any deer or elk hunt I've been on.  No out of state bull tags for me this year, but I'm tagging along on a Unit 8 AZ bull hunt this fall.  So now I can compare one of AZ's best with one of NM's best.  Even without the tag, can't wait to get out with the buglers again.  There's nothing like it.

I know 9 is awesome, so 8 shouldn't be too bad.  That will be a different hunt for you.  I think its more desert.  I am really hoping for some screaming bulls.
Title: Re: WWOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Post by: WAcoueshunter on June 25, 2007, 01:39:10 PM
We had a 7-day season, and we were there for 6 of the days.  The bugling was entirely weather dependent.  Other than a few hours of quiet in the heat of the day, they'd pretty much bugle all day and night if it wasn't raining or windy.  Had a couple wake us up one night within 100 yards of our tents.  We had one windy day and one rainy day - didn't hear much either day.  To me, that's the scary part of a 5-day season.  If you get screwed by the weather a few of the days, and the elk shut up and bed down in heavy cover, you might only get a day or two of really good hunting.  But if it's nice out and the bulls are bugling, you shouldn't have a problem getting close to a 300" bull.  Obviously, getting into bow range and having/making a good shot is another story, but you should get your chances.  Pray for good weather!
Title: Re: WWOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Post by: boneaddict on June 25, 2007, 04:46:40 PM
Thats exactly what I was worried about with a 5 day season.  Not much leeway if the weather isn't cooperating and in a 5 day stretch, it can be one thing or the other.  All I can do is hope.  I understand where I am going is pretty thick.  i figured it wouldbe pretty open and desert like, but I guess 16D is the most rugged part of NM.  Again, I am looking forward to alot of screaming.  I hope the area is big enough that 40 guys screaming and cow calling doesn't screw it up.
Title: Re: WWOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Post by: WAcoueshunter on June 25, 2007, 10:24:27 PM
Ahh, I'd still give anything for those five days.  Add in three days of scouting, and you're in for an incredible trip.  I'm really jealous.  And don't let the monsoon rains get you down right before your hunt.  Last year, it rained basically every day in August and the first two weeks of September.  Roads were washed out (or closed) all over the place.  But the monsoons should be gone by the time you're there, leaving the hillsides nice and quiet from the rain for the third hunt.  Hence why the late hunt is the hardest to draw.  Can't wait for you to get down there and give us the report!
Title: Re: WWOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOO
Post by: boneaddict on June 26, 2007, 06:09:04 AM
All the reports are that they are getting plenty of rain this spring as well.  That means lots of antler growth.  (Hopefully no fire issues as well.)

Congrats on the tag, You drew my first choice! Oh well next year. The southwest hasn't been good to me yet. I'm a loser in UT, AZ and NM. One of these years.

I don't know if your a member of Huntinfool but if you are Garth will send you a list of other members that have drawn the same tag and info might be shared hunter to hunter.

My buddy drew 16b last year first season, they had a crate shipped DHL with all their gear and then flew down, rented an suv and had a good hunt.

I talked to a ranch in 16d a few years back that would pick me up at the airport in Alburqueque, bunk me at their ranch, feed me and drive me out to hunt for the day on public ground. The ranch is like a dude ranch but they offered this too me 7 or 8 years ago. The hunting on the ranch was high dollar, but it seemed like they would do airport pickup, food, lodging and drive me out and drop me off for the day and pick me up in the evening for around $800.  Not bad when you factor in food, lodging and car rental for a week.

http://www.nbarranch.com/

I don't if they are still offering this.  Good luck on the hunt!
