Cool picture.  At least they make up for scaring you by keeping the mice in check.

I was less that 10 inches I suppose.  Taking macro photgraphy to its finest.  I was hoping to get an action shot. :)

Ten of them today.  Re-loacted a few, killed a couple.  I've got baby birds and the ones eating babies died.

What type of snakes are they?

I know a snake freak that loves garters (obviously those are not garters)

Ill pay 10$ each for puget sound garter snakes... with almost no limit! Maybe I should post that in classifieds??

Thanks Pope.  I was thinking about heading to the Rattlers home to get some Rattler shots, but I won't be in macro mode for those.  Will have to go back to maximium crop factor. :)

To eat or what LTL. (live or dead)
These are gopher, or BULL snakes.  Not too many Garter snakes around my place.  Blue and brown racers, and the occasional rattler.  Few Garter snakes out in the woods.

People call them differently.  East side ones have the yellow stripes.  Have you seen the pic of the one that Klick took.  SOme folks call that a garter snake.

Found another one last night that pissed me off.  My little lady was collecting eggs and she went to crawl in to get an egg from one of the nests and there was one coiled up in front of the nest.  HE DIED.  I'm proud of her for not freaking out.

I was told Bull snakes will keep the rattler population down as well.  Anyone know if theres any truth to that?  Great pics, Bone.

Post by: boneaddict on May 28, 2008, 08:38:26 AM
They aren't.  They have gripper teeth is all, and danger of infection I suppose.  I found one cross though and that worries me.  I lost at least two birds last year to rattlesnake bite, so am always on the look out. They need to leave the eggs and chicks alone and focus onthe mouse, but they'll eat what they can find.

YES there is alot of truth to that.  They are hell on Rattlers.  One of their biggest enemies.  One reason I really like to have a few Bulls around.

I would keep em around too. I thought they kept the rattlers in check.

Great pics man, I'm a big fan of Bull Snakes...  Sure cool how they try to imitate a rattler though when they get coiled and rattle their tail... Their HISS is pretty intimidating to! ;)

I am thinking about trying to get some cool rattler photos Friday.  It was fish, snakes, or shrooms or yard work for the day.  Last day off I have until our big fish trip.

I'll see if I can get pics up of the one Lilly encountered while crawling in after an egg.  I'm really proud of her composure.  I'm a seasoned snake guy and I would have been cussin up a storm.

The snake was coiled half way right in front of the egg when Lilly went to crawl in to get the egg.  She got me and I of course grabbed the camera and pistol in short order.  I snapped a couple of him sneaking away, then put on inthe head.  Sorry snake lovers.  This one had to be sacrificed, I thought my child was in danger. ;)  Damn thing needed to leave my eggs alone.

$20 per egg on this species, or about $200 per bird.

I've taken some serious bird losses from them in regards to chicks and eggs.  I did a necropsy on one of the last ones and he had two expensive chicks in his belly.  They waged war with the wrong guy.
