Title: Shottie for turkeys (Marlin Mod 55 goose gun)
Post by: phishisgroovin on April 08, 2011, 05:51:42 PM
I have an ithaca xl300 semi auto with an improved cylinder choke.
It only shoots 2-3/4" rounds, would this work for turkey rather than me buying a shotgun or using my Marlin Mod 55 with a full+ choke and 36" barrel?

PS: anyone have a spare mag for a marlin model 55 Original Goose gun shotgun, need asap even if i only borrow it.?

You are going to have to pattern it to find out.  I am guessing you are going to want a bit tighter pattern that a full or specific Turkey Choke can provide.

I shoot 3" loads and ended up going through a few different types of loads in order to get a nice tight pattern at 30 yards.

Good luck.

You'll be fine, go hunting. I hear all kinda crap stories about killing gobblers at 70 yards, they are all BULL. go hunt, call it into 25 yards and kill it.

i want to use the goose gun with the 36 inch barrel and the full plus choke in it, the shot pattern is beautiful at 25-30 yards. :chuckle:
But i need a magazine for it, my brother lost it.

I hope you don't have to hike far in your search for a turkey....   :chuckle:

Where are you located?  I have a full choke 870, 2 3/4" wingmaster that you could borrow.

i picked up a winchester mod 120 for $100 from a friend, just have to get a Gobbler choke for it.
The Goose gun is actually lighter than any pump or auto shotgun i have ever picked up, you would be surprised, it eveb with the 36-39 inch barrel points to target alot easier as well, and having the permanent full plus choke barrel, i bet it shoots a seriously tight group of pellets.

My Magazine was shipped priority mail today. i will get to blast this old thing soon now. but i will be using the Winchester 120 for hunts though. Goint to rattle can it when i get it, the wood is fairly beat on. but its a tool not a trophy.
